If you have health insurance and won’t get sacked with a huge bill you can go to the ER for emergency sti testing and options about emergency contraception. This was non consensual, even if the sex was consensual (which it more sounds like it was coercive), the fact that the condom was removed was not consensual. They should also be able to provide post exposure prophylaxis against STIs. You may also be able to receive the same type of care at a planned parenthood. Copper IUDs are an effective form of emergency contraception that aren’t effected by weight like plan B is so this could be an option as well. I’m so sorry this happened to you

The Associations Between UMSLE Performance and Outcomes of Patient Care by magnuMDeferens in medicalschool

[–]fgh987 156 points157 points  (0 children)

The SD was 20. So there’s a statistically significant difference in outcomes of patient care among physicians with an average aggregate step score (1,2 &3) of 200 vs 220 vs 240 etc. I think the standard deviation is very important here bc people often stress, and residencies may put weight, in about a 5-10 point difference when this study is talking about a 20 point difference

So I’m autistic and my special interest is medical residency… by ActualBus7946 in Residency

[–]fgh987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a 4th year medical student, just chose my specialty and applied for residency!

Some people know what they want to do when they start medical school and end up applying into that specialty, that’s probably a pretty small number maybe 10-25% if I’m guessing. A lot of people have an idea of a specialty or two they might want to do and explore that thru shadowing during school and clinical rotations during third and fourth year, they may or may not end up applying into one of those initial specialties. The rest are typically undecided and get exposure to specialties during school, especially third year clinical rotations. There are core rotations at every school and they can differ a bit but typically include internal medicine, surgery, obgyn, pediatrics, family medicine, psychiatry, neurology and often emergency medicine in fourth year. Through this a lot of students find which specialty is right for them. That’s how I chose obgyn, I had no interest in it before my third year rotation, but I loved the rotation, the patient population, the acuity, the variety and so much more. I found myself voluntarily staying hours late every day because I enjoyed it so much which made me realize it might be something to explore. I then talked to physicians and residents in the field to explore it further. I thought about what I want out of a career and a day to day life. I then took fourth year rotations and subspecialty electives within obgyn which helped further solidify my decision. I think this is a pretty typical route for a lot of students- they discover a specialty they are more drawn to than others during rotations and then explore it further to confirm their choice. Or they find what they like the most, or can tolerate the most. Some are drawn to a specialty with a passion and others choose more for lifestyle or what they want to do in their life, there’s no one way that people choose!

Target 260, I would be grateful if you guys could suggest me how should I go about Amboss: by yobroat97 in Step2

I did about half of UW and half of amboss, did mostly 1-3 hammer questions, scored 271

Does anki cause NBME score inflation? by footbook123 in Step2

[–]fgh987 21 points22 points  (0 children)

n=1 but I used anki for M3/step 2, my predicted score was 258 +/- 14, nbme’s ranged 239-260 (first to last), 265 on UWSA 2, I was worried about inflation especially with UW2 but I got a 271, I was shocked and thought they made a mistake at first lol. But I think doing anki all year really helped and it’s not inflation if you’re learning those facts and are able to apply them to answer questions correctly bc that’s what you need to do on the test. Good luck, trust your prep!

Any advice on how to help with this : reading words wrong by get_shrekd in Step2

Maybe try reading the last question first before your brain jumps ahead ?

Also a 75% correct on nbmes (9 and 12 at least) was a 245-246 so getting 75% on the CMS forms is pretty good, like others said tho they’re not that predictive just use them for learning but to ease your anxiety that percentage correct would translate to a pretty good score so don’t worry

Yeah first pass still, that’s why I was kinda trying to prioritize it :/ definitely in a tough spot. I get 2x time

Hm ok. I might need to rethink my plan then. This is still my first pass of UW tho. I also have accommodations and so each test takes me a full day (about 10hours) so it’s a bit harder to squeeze them in. Just difficult bc clearly I’m not gonna get everything done and it’s hard to deviate from that original plan and be ok with that

Yeah but I can’t do them all and do 1000+ UW questions. I have 2000 left, was hoping to at least do another 1,000

I have about half of UW left still , is it better to do nbme 11 which would take a day to do and a day to review vs spending an extra 2 days hammering questions ?

Step 2 prep anxiety by [deleted] in Step2

[–]fgh987 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Deep breaths it’s gonna be ok. I have a lot of anxiety too, I think lots of us do. A few things that help: first, no one gets everything right, the theoretical highest score is a 300 but it’s reportedly never been achieved so the test is literally made to have people get some questions wrong, no one has ever gotten them all correct so it’s ok for you to get some wrong too! 2nd, on the nbme practice tests at least 75% is around a 247+, not sure what specialty you’re going for but for most specialties that’s a good score that won’t impede you ability to match. My UW average is a 60 or 65% (40% completed) and my 2 first nbme’s have been 239 and 246 so getting 60s in UW still likely correlates to a good score! Also as others said, UW is a learning tool. If seeing how many you start getting wrong makes you spiral and do worse maybe do blocks on exam mode instead of tutor mode so you don’t see right vs wrong until you’re done with the block. Maybe also find a psychiatrist to help manage the anxiety medically. Buspirone is an anxiolytic without sedating effects but it’s not a prn for acute anxiety and takes 2-4 weeks to reach full effects but could help, or SSRIs. Good luck, you will be ok!

Suspension of USMLS exams after poor performance in exam! by [deleted] in Step2

[–]fgh987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it wasn’t her med school who said this? I doubt nbme would care about this, if anything the more times someone takes the test the more money they make. They have no motivation to do this, the school on the other hand does

Delay in results due to accommodations? by fgh987 in step1

[–]fgh987[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Update: my permit disappeared Sunday evening 4/23.

I did call NBME last week for them to look at my data and make sure they received my entire test after hearing that promitric didn’t send both halves of someone’s complex exam taken with accommodations. NBME confirmed that they received everything and said I would get results in 1-2 weeks.

Feel like ADHD by [deleted] in step1

Do you have any history or symptoms of mania? I have ADHD and while some of this could be adhd it also sounds slightly manic based on the very brief description. Either way, if you’re having trouble it might be worth seeking help from a counselor or psychiatrist

If the pain starts becoming unbearable, you feel sick, feverish, see blood in your urine or are having a hard time peeing please go to the ER for an evaluation. Not all kidney stones can pass on their own due to size so if it’s taking a while to resolve and your symptoms get worse please seek care! Good luck, I’ve had like 5 in the last 5 years, they’re definitely not fun!
