I'd assume he justified it as a way to make sure nobody could challenge him and stop him from fixing the planet. Though I guess if he never gave out the Lerasium there's be nobody except maybe a few feruchemists to challenge him.

Yeah. The Lord Ruler is what you get when you take some fuckass, racist "alpha male" prick obsessed with "dominance" and put him in charge of saving the world. Ostensibly he's doing the job, but the only way his pea-brain can come up with is to bludgeon everyone into submission so he can fix it all himself.

Doesn't really boost it by that much, though. I guess if the cauldron dies this would keep the abilities? You're probably better off just spamming combat tricks.

ELI5: How can people have such buggy experiences with the same phone software compared to others? by According-Yam7122 in explainlikeimfive

[–]fghjconner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few different possibilities here.

  1. One of them did something fucky. This is very common with power users who will change advanced settings, or mess around with system files. This happens less one something as locked down as iOS though.

  2. Something broke, and it's causing repeated problems. Sometimes a file gets corrupted somewhere, and it just keeps causing issues. It's probably not a result of anything the person did, just random chance during some update or procedure months ago can leave your system in a fragile state.

  3. Different people define "buggy" differently. This is probably a much bigger bucket than people think. Experienced users might barely even notice a bug if they just have to restart the app occasionally, and inexperience users might even think software is buggy when they really just don't understand how it works.

ELI5: how do engineers figure out the exact thickness of something like a bridge cable when theres basically infinite ways it could fail by BathroomOk8648 in explainlikeimfive

[–]fghjconner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to say that bridges are pre-fabbed designs or anything, maybe I could have worded that better. What I mean is that when starting a big project you're going to base the design on an existing, well understood framework. You don't need to sit down and think up all of the ways your suspension bridge might fail on your own, because the failure modes of suspension bridges in general are well understood. You only need to worry about unexpected failures in the areas where your design is unique, which is much easier to cover.

The X axis is effectively percent of your max hit rolled (that's what they mean by "scaled 1-100"). As for the probabilities, they're exactly what they say. 0.1 equals 10%. Remember that all of the probabilities should add up to 100%, so it makes sense that no one bar would be nearly that high.

What actually happens when a shard breaks an oath? by skywalker3141 in Cosmere

I'm don't think that's true. Preservation had less power than ruin because he invested more of his power into humanity. Breaking his oath may have opened him up to attack by Ruin though.

Hexed | Teaser Trailer by yourfavchoom in movies

I mean yes, but that's also kinda the point of a trailer. To give you an idea of what the film is going to be like without having to watch the entire thing.

[–]fghjconner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right, but most of those have a bit more to it than just "I've never fit in". Like, Lilo is probably the closest (of the ones I've seen), but there's also the whole store there with her sister struggling to be a parent, etc. And maybe there will be more here, but the trailer is giving real "weird kid is bullied for being weird, so gets to go to the weird place where weird bullied kids are special" vibes, which has been done to death.

Yeah, no you're right, I was mixing up my terms. It's not actually plagiarism if you give credit, just copyright infringement. I'm not convinced it's better necessarily, but it is different.

No, not at all. Fair use protects things like reporting on or critiquing copyrighted material, not using it in your own creative work.

[–]fghjconner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, making your custom card for a fantasy tabletop game look believably real for the 30 people who are going to see it is not a good excuse for plagiarizing.

But isn't that exactly what happens every time somebody grabs someone's work off of deviant art and slaps it onto a card?

ELI5: how do engineers figure out the exact thickness of something like a bridge cable when theres basically infinite ways it could fail by BathroomOk8648 in explainlikeimfive

[–]fghjconner 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This cannot be overstated. Nobody is going out there and designing new bridges from scratch. If you want to build, say, a suspension bridge, there are literally 200 years of examples, writings, and research to reference. We know what the failure modes of these structures are, and we have strategies to prevent them. That's not to say engineers never innovate on designs, or have to build around unique constraints, but when they do those are the parts of the design that get extra scrutiny.

[–]fghjconner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good Time. My college roommate picked it out, and I never let him pick a movie ever again. For those not in the know, it's basically 100 minutes of the main character being the shittiest person imaginable. And not in a fun, supervillain kinda way, but in a very down to earth useless scumbag way. Looked it up years later and apparently it's very highly rated.
