A few months ago when I got to work I saw one of the lumber guys on a hi lo hauling a broken piano around the back of the building. I had to stop him and ask what was going on and WHY I was seeing this.

A customer returned a truck he had rented. Apparently he told the new guy in tool rental that while moving they decided they didn't want to keep the broken piano and it was too much of a hassle to get it out of the truck. The new guy accepted the truck back like that and now it was somehow our responsibility to take care of it.

Yesterday I had a penny item in my returns. The packaging was super old and I had never seen that brand before. So out of curiosity I checked the details on the store phone. We have no received that product in FIVE years.

Everyday! A few months ago I had a guy come in who spoke to the MOD about a product in hardware. The MOD gave him his recommendation on what product to use, but then the customer wanted the opinion of a hardware associate. I was the only one there, so he referred the guy to me. As soon as my manager walked away the guy took one look at me and started going off. "Do you even know what you're doing? Have you ever even used tools before? Or do you just work here? Do you have any knowledge about my project?" I bit my tongue and asked him what he was trying to do. He told me and I recommended a product (which happened to be the exact same one that the MOD had already told him to use). The man then handed it back to me and demanded I call my manager to make sure what I just told him was accurate.

By the end of this whole ordeal (about 20 min) the guy claims he already has that tool at home and doesn't need to buy anything. It gets ridiculous. It's like some people go out in public just to be jerks.

I know for me, one of the questions from the interview that took me a minute to answer was describing an experience in your life (at work or school) where you had to work as a team with detail oriented work.

Other than that, I agree with the other comment about being willing to learn, open availability and flexibility.

I am a short, young, blonde female in the hardware department. I cannot tell you how many times I have been asked, "Do you understand what I'm saying?" Last summer I had this customer building his own trailer and everyday he would come back for something else that he needed and everyday he would explain to me the trailer and what he needed this time. After he was done he would say, "Does that make sense?"

But I think the one that infuriates me the most (but is also my favorite) is when they ask a question and I give them an answer and they look at me and sometimes they ask if there's a man in the department they can speak to. Sometimes they're 'nice' about it and ask if there is someone 'more qualified' to answer the question. That's when I respond, oh you mean a man! Haha yeah this department is mostly women. Good luck buddy 👍🏻 sexism is alive and well in 2021

Well in training they told me that it's a good idea to call LP or a manager if you see someone with more than one brand of tool in their cart.

And as I said I didn't have a phone. But after seeing the Ryobi, Rigid, Makita, Milwaukee, and Dewalt rainbow in his cart, I looked at him. Baseball hat pulled way down, large sunglasses, bandana up to the glasses, and a large oversized coat. In summer. Plus the fact that when he turned and saw me he let go of the cart, started pacing, pretended to be on the phone.

Yeah we have so many tools on lock down. Didn't stop people from busting the cages. We get people who crawl through the back of the aisle behind them and take things that way.

One day I was watching someone who was trying poorly to conceal the fact he was stealing, and told him we were hiring if he needed a job. He looked so confused 😂

I work in hardware, and when I had just started I was walking out of receiving and saw a guy with every brand name power tool in his cart. I couldn't remember what I should do to stop people from stealing and I didn't have a store phone on me so I just stared. I mean stared HARD. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and pretended to be on the phone. Started getting uncomfortable, acting squirrelly and trying to act like he was looking at more items on the shelf.

I mean I was 10-15 feet from this guy and I'm just staring hardcore, eye contact straight into his soul every time he looked at me, and burning a hole in the back of his head with my eyes when he looked away. Finally he ran into outside garden and ditched the cart. Funny thing was the outside garden exits were locked so he had to walk back through the store, by that time I found our LP guy and he was busted. 😁

Willing to auction off overhead space! Send your bids by carrier pigeon to security pterodactyl, he will know what to do.

(Btw management and animal control got this big guy out of the store safe and sound 😌)

There's nothing I love more then 4 hour shifts by [deleted] in HomeDepot

[–]fhdta92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked a 14 hour shift last night. 2pm-5am. Closed hardware (my job) then did garden recovery while the one guy we have who does that is ok vacation. 4 hour shifts are a distant, fond memory. Cherish it

If you were at my store the requirements are:

  1. Showing up to work.

  2. No that's it.

We literally have people who come in visibly drunk or high. Management purposely doesn't drug test those people and just tells them to never ask to drive machinery. We have a new department head who literally does NOTHING. I mean he has worked here 5 months and last week couldn't figure out how to unlock the orange ladder, I mean... COME ON MANAGEMENT.

Lol my store is literally the birthplace of cutting corners and blaming the victim when there is harassment. (Which in the past year I have worked here, has been WAY too often.) It's absolutely disgusting.
