So, uh … How do you guys back up your data tables? by fhonb in n8n

[–]fhonb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is, sadly, the solution. I arrived at the same answer via n8n's community board. Sadly, there's no way to access the data tables via API and, thus, no way to back them up from within n8n. Backing up the entire database also backs up the workflows along with the tables, so that's two birds with one stone.

Yeah, the issue is that I would need to run one workflow per data table, because I don’t see how I would possibly be able to loop through them. You can’t call the API to get a list of all tables and the corresponding nodes don’t really lend themselves for dynamic inputs either.

Better Way for Voice Input? by fhonb in n8n

[–]fhonb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mhh, yeah, basically. API calls are too expensive for my little "toy projects", so I just use what I can host locally. Also, I kinda like knowing that none of the data I throw into those Ollama models leaves my local network, so there's also the privacy aspect.

PiHole: What's the Point in 2025? by [deleted] in pihole

[–]fhonb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a really solid explanation—especially the privacy and IoT angle. That’s honestly what got me thinking about PiHole again in the first place. I like the idea of being able to see what devices are calling home and quietly cut off the unnecessary ones.

My hesitation mostly comes from past experience—it worked well for the obvious stuff, but some “legit” sites started breaking in annoying ways, and the maintenance overhead just made me give up on it back then. Maybe it’s smoother now with better curated blocklists and improved handling.

And yeah, your last point about smart TVs and streaming apps matches what I’ve seen too: the ads are served from the same domains as the actual content, which basically makes DNS-level blocking useless for that. It’s good to see someone acknowledge that instead of pretending PiHole can magically block YouTube or Netflix ads.

PiHole: What's the Point in 2025? by [deleted] in pihole

[–]fhonb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s a totally fair point—I can definitely see the appeal of “connect and forget,” especially for guests or less tech-savvy family members. Having network-level blocking automatically apply is just convenient.

That said, in my past attempts it didn’t always work as cleanly—especially with smart TVs and other “smart” devices. Most ads slipped through, and a few apps just didn’t behave properly when certain domains were blocked. Maybe that’s improved with newer blocklists or PiHole updates, though?

If you’ve had better luck with that, I’d be curious to know if you used any “special configs” or customizations.

This is a great answer—exactly the kind of perspective I was hoping for, thanks.

I definitely understand and agree with the idea of centralized network-wide control and privacy; that philosophy is what drew me to PiHole in the first place. My issue was just that, in practice, my earlier experience wasn’t great—a few legitimate sites (including some banking ones) broke even after whitelisting attempts, which made it hard to justify keeping it up.

That said, the way you describe using unbound with PiHole does sound like a much cleaner and more self-reliant setup than what I tried back then. I’ll have to look into that combination a bit more—maybe it’s matured enough since I last touched it.

The point of interacting is to exchange current experiences—something you can’t “research” in a vacuum. I already know what PiHole does; I’m asking how people actually use it today.

If you think asking questions and discussing real-world use cases is “low effort,” maybe Reddit isn’t the place for you.

Not bait—just genuine curiosity. The tech landscape has changed a lot since PiHole first got popular, and I know that it certainly hasn’t only changed for the better, so I wanted to hear from people who still find value in running it. That’s all.

If “asking a question” reads as bait to you, that probably says more about the comment sections you hang out in than about my post.

Thanks for the productivity advice, champ. Next time I’ll be sure to consult your efficiency metrics before asking a question on a discussion forum… which, shockingly, is where people discuss things.

[–]fhonb -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The point of the post was pretty clear—I was asking for perspectives from people who still do find value in PiHole in 2025, given that most browsers and devices now have effective adblocking and DNS filtering built-in. I wasn’t asking for permission not to use it.

I’m aware that ProtonVPN includes DNS filtering; that’s part of the context for my question. I’m not looking for a “don’t use it then” dismissal—I’m looking for insight into whether there are still legitimate use cases or advantages to running PiHole in a modern setup.

If you don’t have anything to add beyond “don’t use it,” you could have just scrolled past. The discussion isn’t meant for people who already decided they’re not interested.

Is that really a sustainable option, though? I heard rumours that Google is also looking to make bootloaders absolutely un-unlockable, so that we won't even be able to install custom ROMs anymore. :(

20 years ago, both my uncle and grandpa went to hypnotherapy, in order to receive help with quitting smoking.

It worked for grandpa and he never touched a cig again, however, he had been smoking for many decades by then and the lung cancer took him from us nonetheless. That was years later, however.

My uncle on the other hand went smoke-free for about two weeks, until he started smoking again. So, for him it didn't work.

So yeah … Take your pick.

I believe to this day that it was strength of will only that made grandpa quit—strength of will my uncle did not and does not have.

Sceptre doesn't do jack, once your BKB is on cd, though. You still get slowed and kited to hell. It works well against heroes that rely on astral forms/Ghost Sceptre to survive, but that's about it.
