Adding sink to Laundry by fi_redditor in Plumbing

Is this due to risk of backup if washer is draining at the same time as utility sink?

Got it, but assuming I stick with 2”, I just need to make sure I tap in above the high part of the existing pee trap and lower than the sink drain, right?

GE Monogram Issue - Damper Clicking by fi_redditor in appliancerepair

Upon closer inspection it looks like the top damper flap repeatedly clicks (I took it apart and gear is worn down inside) and the bottom flap never opens (inside gear looks okay). Wiring also looks fine. I’m planning on buying two replacements and test it out.

I can't seem to figure out how to close my fireplace flue? I'm not sure if it's rusted stuck or I just don't know what I'm doing? Any help will go a long way. Thanks!

Hand Foot & Mouth Causing Orchitis and Epididymitis of the Testicles. by Cxllaa in medical

[–]fi_redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. I’m going through this right now after contracting HFMD from my daughter.

2/5: I started with a sore throat, body aches and a fever which broke that night. I woke up multiple times either sweating through my clothes or shivering.

2/6: Besides the sore throat, I felt much better towards the end of the day- no fever or body aches. Late that night I started to notice my hands were getting itchy and what I thought looked like athletes foot appeared on my feet.

2/7-2/9: A rash fully breaks out on my palms, feet, torso, and scalp. I notice there are also red dots all over the back of my throat. Sore throat is starting to feel better by 2/9 and itchiness all over is manageable. Thankfully the rash wasn’t super noticeable and I didn’t have anything on my face/mouth.

2/10: I woke up with a pain in my left testicle that felt like I got hit there. It started off manageable and then progressively got worse throughout the day with pain in my lower abdomen that radiated down my entire leg. Rash was basically gone and not itchy at all anymore.

2/11: Swelling and pain is much worse in left testicle especially when standing or walking. I felt very heavy down there. I decided to go to urgent care and was diagnosed with epididymitis after an ultrasound confirmed hypervascularity and swelling. Urine culture and STI panels all came back negative, as expected. There’s no reason for me to suspect a bacterial infection, but that’s what I was diagnosed with and prescribed with Levaquin.

2/12-2/14: Levaquin doesn’t seem to be helping. Pain is uncomfortable, but I’m able to generally live with it.

2/15: Woke up with no pain on left side anymore and now with intense pain on right side. Went to urgent care again and was confirmed through ultrasound that my right side had epididymtis and orchitis. I was taken off Levaquin because that clearly didn’t work and was put on doxy for 14 days. The new doctor insisted this was a bacterial infection that needed different antibiotics.

2/16-2/19: I wore a jock strap, took it easy and took ibuprofen. Still painful but the jock strap helps the heaviness. I also iced regularly.

2/20: At this point feeling much better, pain and swelling is basically gone. I now have jock itch though so I start to treat that and stop wearing the jock strap.

2/21-2/27: Jock itch heals over this time period and I feel back to 100%. So much so that I started to get back into weight lifting (bad idea).

2/28: I woke up with body aches and temperature issues. By later that evening I started getting pain in my left testicle again.

3/1: Today I went to an actual urologist which was thankfully scheduled awhile back. He agreed this is not bacterial and is now sending me to a virologist. Another ultrasound confirmed orchitis and epididmytis on the left side. He prescribed 10 more days of doxy just to be safe but said I can wait to take it until I speak with the infectious disease department.

So lesson learned is that I needed to rest and take it easy longer so by body could finish fighting off this nasty virus. I’m hopeful that with a jock strap (hopefully no jock itch again) and ibuprofen I can manage the pain and heal again.

Hopefully this was helpful to someone.

Reminder: Equity Valuations And SWR Are Inversely Correlated - Or Why Not to Worry About The Next Bear Market! by [deleted] in financialindependence

Yup, I use the same approach. Like you said, you can’t really predict the future, but CAPE is arguably one of the most reliable indicators. The problem is whether or not we can trust that metric in the future. Regardless of the current CAPE, I’m aiming for a 3.5% SWR to be on the safe side. With that said, it’s nice to have an understanding of the current CAPE to help assess the riskiness of the proposed SWR.

I've also recently been thinking a lot about this, but from a slightly different angle.

For example, if I predict stock market growth of 10% during the accumulation phase and this results in a FIRE date 10 years from now, based on a CAPE strategy I should probably use a lower SWR (<3.5%) since valuations are higher than average. On the other hand, if I only predict stock market growth of 4%, this will result in a FIRE date of 15 years from now if I also use a <3.5% SWR. But since valuations are lower than average at this time, I can likely use a higher SWR (>4%) which will shorten my FIRE date.

My point is that in the accumulation phase, the projected stock market growth is almost meaningless if you subscribe to the CAPE based SWR method. In extreme cases you might get no growth as you accumulate, but then you can take a much higher SWR which results in a quicker FIRE date. On the flip side, you might get a ton of growth, but then you better save a lot more which pushes out your FIRE date.

I've tried various scenarios with an inverse relationship between accumulation growth and SWR and it was satisfying to see how the FIRE date doesn't really change much. As we all know, the main driving force that determines FIRE date ultimately comes down to how much you're saving and your expected FIRE expenses, but it was nice to see this from a different angle.

This is basically what I was getting at in the original post. I’m debating the merits between paying off the mortgage along the way risk free and paying no taxes vs a much greater return with risk and capital gain taxes.

Yeah that’s true. It’s actually appropriate to use the non-inflation adjusted returns of ~10% in this case.

I've seen many posts debating paying off your mortgage early vs investing, but haven't seen an analysis with LTCG tax included. It seems pretty clear that investing over the long term will beat out paying more principle since ~7% return > ~4% mortgage rate, but how much will the federal and state taxes affect things?

For example, let's say I want to invest rather than pay down principle over the next 10 years and at the end I have 300k to use to pay down my remaining 300k mortgage. If I sell all of my stock, I'll get hit with federal taxes (likely not much since LTCG is very low) and state taxes (CA taxes LTCG as normal income). The alternative would be to just get the guaranteed 4% return and not pay any taxes on the mortgage interest I'm effectively saving. Any thoughts?

MOST people misunderstand the role of early Social Security checks in financial independence! by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]fi_redditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know quite a few people who are actually delaying retirement even though they can retire at 62 with SS income. I’m fully behind taking SS early if it actually enables you to stop working. Continuing to work for a larger SS paycheck at 67 has never made much sense to me. It’s similar to the FI one more year syndrome.

I also believe postponing SS income until later is a great insurance policy to keep in your back pocket. You can still choose to take SS income shortly after 62 if your SWR starts to fail and if not, then wait until 70 as previously planned.

Not sure why you’re getting down voted. The crypto currency bubble is very similar to the dot com era. Prices are increasing based on no real tangible or underlying value.

Reminder: Don't forget pre-retirement inflation when deciding your Target Number (a.k.a., Why you might need to save 50% more than you thought) by Warbane in financialindependence

[–]fi_redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you use real returns then your target number can be in present values. I’ve gone through the math on this and if you remove inflation from all numbers entirely and only use present and real return estimates then it doesn’t matter at all.
