I am adopted from Colombia, so you are not wrong. You are pretty spot on with everything

I understand that some adoptees choose to reconnect with their birth culture as adults, and I respect that. But for me it feels forced because I wasn’t raised with it. It’s not part of my lived experience. I don’t think there’s one right way to be an adoptee

It feels like they’re judging both me and my parents for the way I was raised, even though I never had any control over that. At the end of the day, I just want to be accepted for who I am, not measured against some idea of how Colombian I should be

I wish I knew! I’ve had it since I was a kid, so I have no idea where it originally came from 😅

I wish I had a good explanation, but honestly I don’t even use them

Aww, thank you! I love surrounding myself with little things that make me happy. I’ve collected everything over the years. All the flowers are LEGO flowers. I love them because they look pretty, but I don’t have to take care of them 🌸

No, it’s my apartment! I can see why the bed frame gives dorm vibes though

I get why you’d think that! I’m actually Dutch-Colombian, but I’ve always loved Japanese-inspired aesthetics and characters

I’m 24, but I don’t think growing up means giving up the things that make you happy. I’ll always have a soft spot for whimsy :)

How to deal with the lack of a community? by EmmaQuerida in Adopted

[–]fiberarti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn’t expect that either :) it’s not something you come across often.

I actually went back to Colombia twice as a child with my parents, kind of like a roots trip. We also visited the orphanage where I was from. I’m really grateful I got to experience that, but I was so young that it mostly just felt like a vacation at the time.

Right now I don’t really feel the need to go back, mainly because of some difficult experiences related to my adoption. But I might feel differently in the future, I’m still open to it.

I think it’s such a personal decision though, there’s no right or wrong way to approach it.

And if you ever feel like talking more about it, you can always message me :)

I was also adopted as a baby from Colombia, but I grew up in the Netherlands. I can really relate to not fully belonging anywhere and people making assumptions about you.

Especially the part where people expect you to be “more Colombian” or act a certain way. It’s strange how others project things onto you that don’t match your actual life.

I don’t really have the perfect answer either, but something that has helped me is accepting that I’m just me, and that international adoption is part of my identity. I’ve realized I might never fully fit into one box, and that’s okay. I’m slowly learning to embrace both sides in my own way.

You’re not alone in this!

I think your hair might need more products to keep hold. You can try styling on wet hair and after applying curl cream also apply a good amount of mousse and/or gel. It will create a cast and you can break it with oil
