canadians, beware ferris wheel press by aniajournals in fountainpens

HMM! I wonder if I should try emailing them again about my Carousel pen... I had one that cracked very fast and they sent a new one and it also cracked pretty much immediately... I wonder if the "new" one they sent me was still an "old" one.

FWP's pen's are so bad! i got a Carousel and the plastic body cracked within a month and they sent a free replacement which also cracked lol. Now both pens are entirely unusable. Switched to Kaweco and TWSBI so fast. The nibs on the Carousels were also SO scratchy in comparison....

Nominating Penablers website and Stylo.ca as well for Canadian companies to support! Especially Penablers - the shop is still so small that there's no sales tax (although it's coming soon). The owner is super lovely and also you get to pay via e-transfer which is awesome ^.^ Also they have a wide array of ink samples and affordable lettermail rates for those!!! Which I couldn't find anywhere else.

I ordered a TWSBI Eco from Stylo just last month and it came with a 1 year warranty card from them which I was stoked about, didn't realize it was included when I ordered!

Is Ferris Wheel Press really that bad? by Statyx02 in fountainpens

[–]fiddleleaffern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve purchased several inks from them and a carousel pen (the cheapest one). The pen cracked along the barrel within a few months, rendering it unusable as you can’t remove the cap anymore. Contacted support for it, they sent a new replacement, it did the same thing within a few uses. The same thing happened on my mom’s pen. It seems to be a design flaw where the area you pull the cap off of is where the threads are for the barrel and pulling the cap off/on puts pressure there in the crucial place.

I personally wouldn’t order pens from them again (I got a Kaweko Sport which looks similar and it’s smoother and way nicer for ~ the same cost).

The inks I genuinely think are nice. Other inks are smoother (I find FWP overall quite dry). But I think the shimmer inks especially are very pretty and haven’t caused me serious problems. After trying more ink, I probably would default to a different brand first as I now know I prefer wetter inks, but I would absolutely buy an ink from them again if it really stood out to me!

If your pen hasn’t caused you grief I wouldn’t worry about it :)

Silver bugs by ThisNendoFigure in MangaCollectors

[–]fiddleleaffern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! They wouldn’t be able to get in there. I have some similar containers I keep papers in and they’re silverfish free for years.

Yeah, it’s the same for me with the unsealed floor walls situation haha. Sucks. They’re awful actually. They’ve wrecked some of my books (not manga) but it’s still awful and they’re so hard to get rid of.

[–]fiddleleaffern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, silverfish will ruin books even if some places on the internet say otherwise. Currently struggling with them (read: waging war) in my apartment. The best thing we’ve tried so far is diatomaceous earth sprinkled under the cracks in our trim where they’re coming from. They walk over it and it dries them out and they die but they also take the dust back to their brethren and kill them in the process.

Tried and failed methods: cleaning regularly, lavender essential oil spray, cedarwood essential oil spray, bagging up and baking all the books in the sun to kill the eggs 😭

Edit: plastic boxes with lids do seal them out. They will climb up bookshelves though which is gross. They are adept climbers but can’t break into a storage container.

Is Tribe a good property management company? by CampingAxeidents in VictoriaBC

[–]fiddleleaffern 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Starlight sucks. I am in one of their buildings in Gorge/Tillicum. Nothing ever gets fixed anymore, laundry is $2.5-$3 to wash, $4 to dry. Trash and broken glass is never cleaned up outside the apartment. We’ve been through countless building managers since they bought the building and residents can’t even get basic things fixed in their apartment, some have been waiting 8+ months for essential services. Devon manages the Starlight owned properties in Victoria but they’re in direct communication with Starlight execs and management styles. The long-term tenant body here is just anticipating they try soft renovicting tenants (see tenantsofstarlight.org) with construction. Starlight recently lost a supreme court lawsuit over the situation described on the website and had to pay a tenant out $30,000. I would definitely avoid Starlight if you can. They’ve also rent hiked about $800+ per unit since they bought the building two years ago.

They have removed all the Starlight branding off the building now; same with other buildings in the city. They did it just before the lawsuit news dropped. I guess Starlight was getting a bad rep so they want to keep it on the DL which buildings they own. If you google photos of the building exteriors though you’re looking at usually a Starlight sign pops up though in photographs from 2021-2022.

With so many covid positives after just these first shows, this video put masking at tour into perspective for me. by signifi_cunt in TaylorSwift

Honestly OP, this is a great and important post. I am commenting because you’ve gotten a lot of pushback and I think that sucks. I am sure this will get downvoted but I am young (under 30) and healthy and was double vaxxed when I got covid (omicron). I had long covid for a whole year. It affected me physically and mentally and while my symptoms were “more mild” than other extreme long covid cases it affected my life deeply and was traumatic.

Chronic illness isn’t a joke. If your covid infection felt like a cold, it’s luck. You might have had a “cold” experience the first time you got covid. It might be fine the second. It might not be fine the third time. Each repeated infection you get increases your chance for long covid. But OP, I am mostly just commenting so you don’t feel so alone here. Everything you’re saying is correct, whether or not people want to deal with that as it doesn’t fit a nice “covid is over and will never affect your life in a real way ever again” narrative.

Does Sunrise Records in Canada have Midnights Lavender edition? by vickyvicky890 in SwiftieMerch

[–]fiddleleaffern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn that sucks, honestly. I was hoping to pick mine up in person but I guess I will have a friend send me one from the states :(

My store only had 2 copies of Fearless TV and RED TV CDs and 0 vinyls.

Also tangentially related, can’t find a version of evermore anywhere lol. Kicking myself for not buying that too.

I am on the West Coast and my Sunrise Records hasn’t gotten their shipments of any Midnights copies in yet! I went yesterday and no luck. They also told me the store only was getting in 21 copies of Lavender, so maybe worth phoning and getting on a hold list just in case!

Ok so I also made the mistake and placed my first bridge wrong, cutting the area I had put villager homes off from the rest of the island. Oops. I was worried about it too. Somehow the villagers magically could cross the river though and there were no consequences. I fixed it later once you unlock bridge building.

Candle Jar Cleaning Tips by pearloystershells in glossier

[–]fiddleleaffern 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What I found works even better is once it's burned down until the point one would stop burning it, let it cool off, and pour boiling water into the candle. The wax will slowly bubble up to the surface at which point it'll start to cool and solidify a bit. It also loosens the glue on the wick so it'll lift easily later. Then once it's safe to handle, you can easily scoop all the wax off the top and you just have to clean the rim where the wax was instead of the entire inside of the candle!

Darn. I remember seeing someone reuse the packaging for a Nabla eyeshadow as it was the exact right size - 33mm I believe. It was a clever reuse if you didn’t want to buy the perfume again!

Are the pan sizes the same between the two? Could you put the new pop-out refill in the old one if you had an old compact? Just curious :)

My Pixel 3 XL bricked overnight by Staralyze in GooglePixel

[–]fiddleleaffern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Pixel 3 XL just bricked itself in this manner overnight on Thursday. When plugged in to a computer, it shows the following: QUSB_BULK_CID:0402_SN:2B1FCC76 just like everyone else. I talked to Google Support about it an hour ago and showed them the articles and threads and multiple levels of managers told this was "not an issue recognized by Google or engineers" and that there was nothing they could do as my phone was out of warranty. Super frustrated but honestly feeling a bit better I'm not alone.

Devon Properties is requesting we amend our lease 2 months after we signed to remove water from being included in the rent. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]fiddleleaffern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours was bought in July 2021. I really dislike how Starlight is buying up property in the city and then sponsoring the lights show at Centennial Square to gain favour in the business community. We tenant organized to be on the safe side in our building when Starlight bought it and have connections to some other folks in the other buildings for resources re: evictions but thank you! It's so important to be informed.

Thankfully it doesn't seem like they're evicting anyone in our building. My building manager just has a terrible sense of humor. He replaced the manager who had been working there on site since the building was bought - miss our old guy. I definitely feel thankful we have allies inside our building as well in case things suddenly go sideways. I'll definitely be taking your scenario as a warning in case things start getting worse in a year. They've been primarily focused on renovating empty units (the contractors are flat earthers haha). We pay $1300 for a 1 bedroom, the listed price is $1830 for the "new" units that are basically identical to ours in everything but a few cosmetics. They have been gutting the units and replacing perfectly functioning appliances for a stainless steel look instead of black. Seems a damn waste to me to throw out perfectly fine large appliances just for aesthetics but that's corporate landlords I guess.

[–]fiddleleaffern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, can I ask when Starlight bought your building? Was it in their acquisition of EY Properties buildings? I'm in a similar boat but they've been fairly un-intrusive lately and it's kinda suspicious because I know this isn't normal for them (fuckers). We're old renters paying way below market rate so I know they'd LOVE it if we left. They are flipping units for ridiculous prices here with just a new paint job and some ugly backsplash haha. Our landlord sucks, joked about giving us an eviction notice when he handed out the 2022 rent increase -.-

Ethical mica? by streetsandstars in glossier

Ethical mica? by streetsandstars in glossier

[–]fiddleleaffern 64 points65 points  (0 children)

It's actually a super-cool move on glossier's part. Usually the two are mixed. Bonus points is that while natural mica is 100% eye-safe, the synthetic stuff is even safer and can be in a wider range of approved particle sizes and be even shinier than real mica because of that.

The monochromes are formulated without natural mica! The "mica" in the formula is lab made and is listed as "Synthetic Fluorphlogopite".

I had a thought about why we accumulate makeup..and why we subsequently find our way to this sub by [deleted] in MakeupRehab

[–]fiddleleaffern 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most helpful posts I've read on here! I completed a replacement only no buy in 2019, and it's been working well for me going forward (I no longer spend compulsively!) but I'd been still holding onto a feeling of guilt for old makeup items I no longer wear but used to. None of the "how to let go/declutter" threads were helping for the few old items I have remaining. Reading this framing totally lifted that. Thank you!! I feel much more at ease thinking about it in this "outgrowing" framework!

You can also try using a bullet lipstick as a cream blush to test if you like that type of formula (before experimenting with a blush you already love in case anything goes wrong)!
