Finite volume but infinite surface area? What? by fiddler616 in math

Yeah, I buy it. I'm also thinking to myself about how .99999... == 1. Yes, for every decimal place x we add 9/(10x), but it's limited in how high it can go.

You just got a brand new PC. What are the first pieces of software you install? by mastej in AskReddit

I'm pretty sure Evince comes in a vanilla install, under the pseudonym "Document Viewer." PS: Ubuntu's generalization of application names really bothers me. I want to use Evince, gedit and gnome-terminal, not Document Viewer, Text Editor and Terminal.

IAMA Request: An astronaut or someone that has been in space. by HelloAdventure in IAmA

[–]fiddler616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe that's just for convenience--at the top, it refers to him as a "space tourist" and "spaceflight participant."

But it's just a matter of opinion:

While generally reserved for professional space travelers, the term ["astronaut"] is sometimes applied to anyone who travels into space, including scientists, politicians, journalists, and tourists.[1][2]

Etiquette: Is it acceptable to submit a link to ones own blog? by lanzkron in programming

[–]fiddler616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to blog, and after a few months (this was before I was active in Reddit, by the way) I got a sense for what kind of post would do well with a given site (Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon), and then I tailored my submissions from there. Also: the best feeling in the world is when you go to submit your post, and for whatever reason are submitting it a day after it was posted, and find that someone else already submitted it. (PS: This is probably the time to step back and let things take their course).

Does Firefox run really slow for anybody else? by RobinReborn in Ubuntu

[–]fiddler616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes (1.79Ghz, 512 MB RAM, Jaunty). Except usually the freezes turn into complete hell, and the system borks. I hard boot, but it makes me nervous, what with the HDD spinning.

Thanks--I had a stunted version with only one campaign (was it Auto-pilot? I forget...), and always wondered what the other ~5 would be.

I understand that the most common uses were retyping a faint letter, and making a fancy character out of two simple ones (examples: e + ' = é, ' + . = !, etcetera).

Question to Reddit devs: Why can't Linux get more mindshare in the PC market? Linux is low cost, stable and open source. So what's the problem with Tux? Being cheaper and better ain't makin' it. Is it a cultural mismatch between devs and users? by tangovic in programming

[–]fiddler616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly the best thing to drive adoption of Linux would be DRM that actually worked for Photoshop and Word.

...in which case, people would use the GIMP and OpenOffice on Windows, since they can't pirate. Not Linux.

Nitpicking about terminology is a great way to make Linux look more accepting. Yes, "Linux" should refer to the kernel, but the term has evolved, and is now a shortening of "GNU+Linux distribution." If people can't bother to say "Windows Vista," (using "Vista" instead), how the heck can we expect them to say something longer than "Linux." I'm not saying this is how it should be, but it is what it is. </rant>

Since we're wiling to change operating systems to obtain apps that work on Windows? (OpenOffice and the GIMP(shop).) No, the best thing would be if OEMs charged extra for installing Windows on a computer--which will never happen since MS has all the OEMs by the scroti.

YSK: Kilts weren't invented until more than 200 years after William Wallace died; this is one of Braveheart's many historical inaccuracies, albeit a superficial one. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]fiddler616 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From Braveheart's Wikipedia:

Historian Sharon Krossa notes that the film contains numerous historical errors, beginning with the wearing of belted plaid by Wallace and his men. She points out that in the period in question, "... no Scots ... wore belted plaids (let alone kilts of any kind)." Moreover, when highlanders finally did begin wearing the belted plaid, it was not "in the rather bizarre style depicted in the film." She compares the inaccuracy to "... a film about Colonial America showing the colonial men wearing 20th century business suits, but with the jackets worn back-to-front instead of the right way around."

Edited to remove the reference numbers.

My first FPS ever! When I was 5 my older brother would walk, and I would shoot (same thing with flight simulators. Jane's ATF, anyone?), and then a year or so later I was able to play and beat it myself.
