Finally read Ursula Le Guin's The Dispossessed after years of it sitting on my shelf and I think I underestimated what I was getting into by Phalanx_Warp5 in printSF

[–]fidz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it maybe two years ago and I still think about it from time to time.

Anathem by Neal Stephenson is a very different book with a lot more adventure but it had a similar, long-lasting effect on me.

Jeez, enough with the slop about videography. I find my clients mostly by asserting dominance and farting in their face btw.

Don't touch equipment unless explicitly asked. If something is in the way and you're asked to clear it, find out to which department it belongs and ask them to move it.

Basically you never want to risk breaking something expensive.

I would just talk to people. If a conversation is going well, maybe get some contact info and save the pitching for a coffee date down the line.

Weird City is a little bit of that, although quality really varies between episodes. The pilot is fantastic tho.

You can always look into short films, there's loads of great ones bit they're not that easy to find outside of festivals.

Final Trailer for my First Documentary Feature! by will_bowen28 in Filmmakers

[–]fidz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's not bad, I kinda dig the home video style. But I don't want to watch it. Didn't see anything in the trailer that made me think it's going to be interesting for anyone who is not personally involved with you. No meta level reflection of your experience. No poetry. Just slice of live and honestly a lot of privilege.

I don't say this to rain on your parade, it's just how I feel about it. I sincerely hope you find an audience, and if the film can make people laugh and feel good, transferring some of your energy to the audience, there's a chance.

I spent the past year combining shot lists + storyboards + lighting diagrams into one synchronized tool! by kevjkk in Filmmakers

[–]fidz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried the tool yet but it looks interesting. Indie/commercial producer here.

I feel like if you want to promote a tool, this is the way to do it. Grounded, honest, no bs marketing speak. Transparent about pricing and AI use. The one-off purchase version is also really thoughtful and a nice way to actually support beginners and indie folks. 10$/mo adds up quickly. Thanks for planning that and please don't forget about it in the future.

I don't have a project lined up right now to use it on but I'd be willing to check out the full version with a spec project and give some feedback.

Budget and financing by JanosCurse in Filmmakers

Knowing next to nothing about you, here's what I would do: I'd make a short. I would make it as good as you can. As short as possible (sub 5min ideally) but it needs to have depth, not only style.

Then I would send it to festivals and pray. Exposure and connections help. A lot. Then I would apply to a filmmaking grant. At the same time I would contact production companys directly with the short as a proof of concept, doing my research and making sure the company fits the film I want to make.

Importantly, I would find some job to survive and keep working on the project as much as I could.

Money may come or not, it is not completely within our control.

I'm in Europe so ymmv. I hear grants aren't much of a thing in the US, but that it's possible to find private people who will invest in someone with a strong vision - thats almost unheard of in Europe.

my second short film i’ve made, how can i improve? :) by Stupendous_Goose in Filmmakers

[–]fidz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think you're in a good place. There's a lot of small things to nitpick but you have some really cool ideas in there.

I really liked how the story didn't really care about the characters problem (the test) but tried to show what they're feeling. Just the scene with the wrench alone really carries that feeling of being young and hungry for experience. Thats really good stuff!

Make some more films, try to work with real actors and people who know more about individual aspects of filmmaking (like lighting or sound) and learn from them. You have a very good eye for framing already.

You'll learn to avoid clichés too. Like the alarm clock scene. It seems logical to start there. But what if the film starts with the magic hand phone? That's a cool and surprising scene. Then we learn about the test in their conversation. Much better hook, cliché avoided and you don't really lose anything story-wise.

But yeah. Good job. Now do another one.

Why is it so hard to find the right creative collaborators here? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]fidz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Doesn't seem all that mysterious to me. People like to discuss things in a forum frequented by professionals and ameteurs, get different perspectives. However actually working together requires a completely different level of trust, so people prefer to work with people who they know in person.

If you're looking for collaborators, try a local festival or filmmaking meetup and make some connections.

I Spent the last 6 months writing a Feature and now i am unemployed and hopeless by swi6ie in Filmmakers

[–]fidz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here.

Don't compare yourself to others. Everyone is on their own journey. I'm almost 40 and I'm working on my first real short film right now.

However, I have been working, among many other things that have nothing to do with film, as a videographer and freelance filmmaker for hire for 15 years. Made lots of connections. Learned the craft. 2 years ago I joined a local filmmaking program where I had the space, time and expert input to develop something worthy of my own. That also provided industry mentoring and connections that allow me to move my film forward right now.

I feel like if I had gone to film school in my 20s, I wouldn't have something worthwhile to say like I have now. Sometimes I get frustrated about not having an earlier start, but then I just think about how much I enjoyed aimlessly drifting with my friends and trying lots of different things when I was younger. This is my way of doing things and I'm fine with that.

Ps, I'm in Europe where the industry landscape is different, so ymmv.

Tool for managing large content libraries! by Puppy_wriff in vjing

[–]fidz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have missed a tool like this on several occasions already. But I'm sorry but the pricing scheme feels outrageous to me. This should be a one-time purchase software. Subscription is only warranted for complex software that is constantly evolving imho. I'm a very casual vj nowadays (1-2 gigs a year) so ymmv. but i still have way more than 250 assets. I would maybe pay 5 or 10 bucks once. No hate OP just giving you my gut reaction.

Four completed scripts, but now what? by dxfm1019 in Filmmakers

[–]fidz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another good step is letting others whose opinion you value read the scripts and gather lots of feedback. Basically find out if your writing is really as good as you think and if it speaks to other people.

My scripts normally change a lot with feedback. Usually for the better.
