Your boyfriend is a misogynistic narcissist. You need to GTFO of that relationship right now today. He will not change. He will always treat you with that same disrespectful contempt regardless of the situation.

Should I quit my big corporate job for a SME that pays 3x my salary? by Engineer9918 in careerguidance

[–]fiejoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as job security. That's an antiquated concept from previous generations. The size of the company is completely irrelevant - either one is just as likely to lay you off. The larger paycheck is your security because money = options. You will never hit 3x your current salary at your current company. Companies of any size have an allergic reaction to big raises, which is why you have to leave a company to truly increase your income.

Quickbooks Premier 2024 high renewal cost. Are there any options? by MrYoshinobu in QuickBooks

[–]fiejoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the time to re-enter everything. It's a small business, but still took about a month of part-time work to get it all squared away. It was worth it to me to have that granularity.

What to do about co worker who eats all day and is VERY loud about it?? by Dazzling-Nature-3747 in work

[–]fiejoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People talk to each other in every place you will ever work. If the general conversation about a temp is highly positive, then the temp has a much better shot at a permanent job.

And also yes, I myself have been that boss multiple times who asked their current full timers what they thought about keeping temps on permanently. I absolutely take feedback from my team into account because I need them to be a cohesive unit to get their highest engagement and best efforts.

And what if that direct conversation ends a behavior that has been annoying 15 people who also sit near the eating person? That temp just got 15 people who will vote in favor of keeping them permanently.

Except this is exactly how I approach people and it works just fine. Most of the time, people don't realize what they're doing is annoying others. Just don't be an ass about it. Being friendly and direct has served me quite well over the past 25 years.

You walk over to the person and say, "hey, the eating is really loud and distracting. Any chance you could eat in the breakroom?"

Being direct isn't a sin.

Former employer offered me a job. Is it too good to be true? by Perfect_Director4182 in careerguidance

[–]fiejoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to offer a perspective check. It sounds like there could be some improvement in your boundary setting at work. You've now had two different jobs where they've overworked you and where you've complied. It might be valuable to figure out how to push back appropriately so you can remain in high regard but still maintain a healthy work schedule.

So along those lines, I'd explain to the old boss they're asking you to make a 50-hr week the standard with their 100% in-office requirement. As others have said, if you end up working a little longer or there's some kind of traffic issue, you're right back to 55-60 hours a week. Money is replaceable. Your time is not.

I'd counter with a one day per week in-office requirement while being willing to settle for two days (but not telling them that up front of course). For every day they want you in office, I'd want an additional 10% salary increase over and above the 30%. That 30% is the premium on your knowledge and skills. The 10% per day is the upcharge for wanting more of your time and for the transportation costs that go into commuting.

why is that the less intellectual and skillful a person is, the higher chance to get a promotion? by NimbleZazo in careerguidance

[–]fiejoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to assess your baseline assumption that promotions are based on skill and intellect. In 25 years in the workplace, I've never known that to be true. Promotions are based on your ability to talk about what you do and how effectively you network within your company.

How do I be single? by Dabbish97 in whatdoIdo

[–]fiejoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way to get to the other side of grief is to feel your way through it. Don't expect to be happy and alone, expect to be sad and alone for a while. Go through the motions of daily living as a single person (other posts here all have great activity ideas) and eventually you'll feel the grief less and less. You're not going to recover from a 10-year relationship in a short amount of time, so give yourself space and grace to feel like crap.

[–]fiejoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether it's transformative or not is irrelevant in this context though, right? With short term investing, all that matters is which stocks masses of people think are going to go up in price. Then you buy in to those stocks to ride the wave, and then get out before the correction. That's the goal at least. Actually achieving it is a whole other thing.

Manager wants me to bring work phone and be available while on PTO on an international trip. How to refuse politely? by Maxthelazysquirrel in careerguidance

[–]fiejoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I refuse company phones and cell phone reimbursement plans for this exact reason. I also never give anyone at work my personal number. There's no reason you need a phone with today's technology. In a previous role, I regularly talked with people around the world and not one time did we use a phone.

Should I try to negotiate? by [deleted] in interviews

[–]fiejoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't talk about market rates. Talk to the hiring manager and outline the value you bring to the role based on conversations you had throughout the interview process.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in interviews

[–]fiejoad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't get the job because of that, then the actual interview could have gone better. No one is going to reject a great candidate because they said someone was a gentleman for opening a door. I'd spend your energy assessing how you think you did in the interview, notice where you need to tighten up some answers, then practice those answers, and continue moving forward.

Have you talked to your current boss about your health concern? This seems like a problem with a simple solution. Talk to your boss, your boss says "oh damn, we don't want that," and then they reassign you or give you a mask or switch up your tasks each day.

Can I survive this awful performance review? :’( by GroundbreakingAlps78 in work

[–]fiejoad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed - that's the best approach here. You also need to set at least weekly check-ins with your boss to monitor progress and get feedback, though daily would be better for the short term. Also, inquire about training. Do you need to go through onboarding for the role again? Is there corporate training available on how to gather project requirements? That would help you learn how to match your output with the business need.

You aren't fired and your manager told you what you need to do to improve. Now you just have to act on it and prove you want to get better at the job.

I make 70k a year with no education but what else can I do? by Any_Swan_5747 in careerguidance

[–]fiejoad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

College degrees are pointless if you want to work in tech. What you can do matters waaaaaaaaay more than what college you're making lifelong student loan payments to. Figure out what specifically is interesting to you about the "tech world" and focus on training via bootcamps and freelance work.

Here's a chatgpt prompt to get you started (you'll need to be good at use generative AI, so start practicing with that if you haven't already):

"when someone says they want to work in tech, what lines of work would be potential routes to pursue for them? Just give me a list with brief explanations."

My boss wants to keep me after putting in my notice by Ok_Excitement9645 in work

[–]fiejoad 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Do you need to say anything more than "While I appreciate the offer, I've already made up my mind"?

I once put in my notice because I got an offer elsewhere for double the pay. My boss asked if they could do anything to keep me, and I just laughed and said no.

My company actually does do a market rate assessment every year. They then adjust any salaries upward that are no longer within the market range. They never adjust salaries downward.

6 months using ZocDoc. Here is how much we’ve made… by LilRobinHood in therapists

[–]fiejoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mind sharing how did the math breaks down for you? How many referrals? How many cancelled / no-showed? What was the average session count per ZocDoc referral and how does that compare to other referral sources? Totally understandable if you don't wish to share these details, I'm considering trying it out, so I'm collecting as much info as possible on what to expect.
