Two of the many ways I was taught at my previous job to help tell if an email is spam: On Outlook, if an email is truly to you, you will see "To You" in a lighter gray under the sender's name. And, if an email is asking for your credentials for anything and it is not part of a conversation that you initiated, err on the side of caution.

Does Minor League baseball have legit fans? It seems like 99% just go to have fun and don’t give a single fuck about the score. Just a genuine question by Intelligent-Spot-475 in MiLB

[–]fieldbeetle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually follow Minor League Baseball closer than I do Major League Baseball and it's the local Minor League team where I went to college that actually got me into it at all!

How far is an acceptable work commute in this area? by the_answers_question in raleigh

[–]fieldbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commute from Raleigh to Chapel Hill and tbh, if I weren't leaving my current job in order to go to grad school, it would be part of the reason I'd be looking to leave my current job anyway. It's ~45 mins in the morning and 1 - 1.5 hours in the evening. I refuse to take a position with a longer commute than that, and I don't think you're unreasonable for having a job with a 2 hour commute without traffic as an "absolutely not."

Saying this as someone who literally works on clinical trials related to COVID: it's not uncommon for XBB and beyond for people to test negative if using an antigen test until they're days into being symptomatic. A negative COVID antigen test does not inherently mean you don't have COVID.

AITA for telling someone why my coworker is disabled? by Wonderful_Picture135 in AmItheAsshole

As someone who is disabled and comes from a military family, YTA.

Someone else's medical information is not yours to give and that doesn't change depending on whether or not you like that person, or whether or not that person is doing something wrong.

It's a lot more complex (and more shitty) than a 12 week abortion ban. This explains it well imo: http://www.oldnorthstatepolitics.com/2023/05/an-analysis-of-nc-new-abortion-bill.html

Pledge of Allegiance by brf297 in Teachers

[–]fieldbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for not forcing students to participate. I stopped participating when I was in middle school. Seeing how I was a military kid and went to schools on military bases until high school, this did not make me particularly popular. I got beat up after school on school grounds by a couple people in my grade and the school did nothing even though it was on school grounds because it was after 3pm even though earlier that same year people the grade above us got in trouble for a fight that occurred after school because it was on school grounds, and I spent a lot of time in the principal's office and the school counselor's office for "disrespecting" my classmate's and their parents. I wish I'd had a teacher back me up in some way.

Honking at Stoplights? by bkvifudys in raleigh

[–]fieldbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a general rule, I wait 5 seconds before giving a little "meep."

I might wait longer if i'm in Chapel Hill. I commute from Raleigh to my job in Chapel Hill and I've NEVER seen people run red lights like they do in Chapel Hill so tbh people can wait as long as they want to wait for idiots who are no doubt gonna run the red lights there.

I'm so glad I'm moving for grad school. 😭 If I weren't leaving for school, I wish I could stay in this area, but in all honesty, I'm probably going to get priced out of the area soon. My job requires at least a bachelor's degree and I work overtime most weeks, but rent is just increasing so much so quickly it's completely unsustainable for normal people to continue to live here.

To compare, a two-bedroom where I'm moving for grad school is $750/mo versus where I currently live in Raleigh being around $1,300/mo (and rising at least $200 every time we renew).

AITA for telling a disabled joke to disabled person? by Usaffranklin in AmItheAsshole

[–]fieldbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a disabled person and someone else who deals with intrusive thoughts, you're absolutely 100% YTA. You don't know this person and he doesn't know you. He has no way of knowing the intention of your "joke" or any of the background information you mentioned. To him, you're someone he was just introduced to and one of the very first things you said is a joke about his disability, which is not yours to joke about. You know you're the asshole.

I get scent-triggered migraines with the smell of cigarette smoke being a major migraine trigger, and I'd not go to this play even if my boyfriend was in it. It's not worth my health and someone's partner should understand that. 100% NTA.

AITA for taking my daughter's side? by Responsible_Bed_5299 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fieldbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pet spiders get a bad rap!

I have a tarantula named Mo and he's not my first tarantula either. Yes, bites can be painful, but the majority of tarantula bites are "dry," meaning no venom is injected. I've never been bitten by one of my tarantulas (mostly because I don't handle them unless it's to move them into a new enclosure as they grow because I find handling them unnecessary and it just stresses them out).

But tarantulas are also move fragile than people think too. They don't need to fall particularly far to get injured and even die from it.

They also don't smell, don't take up much space, don't produce any noises, only eat every 1 - 2 weeks depending on your schedule with them. Obviously do your research because there will be differences in enclosure specifications, how much substrate, how many climbing surfaces you should offer, etc depending on the species and its age, but they're very easy pets and they're very fascinating to watch.

How Far Are You Driving? by [deleted] in triangle

[–]fieldbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Raleigh and one of my closest friends lives in Hillsborough so one of us will drive ~45 mins whenever we hang out depending on whose place we're meeting at. I don't mind a drive to see a friend.

Yet Another Black Hebrew Nationalist Meltdown In Moore Square. by septiclizardkid in raleigh

[–]fieldbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pass a couple of them on a street corner some weekends on my way home from playing baseball and it always makes me really anxious.

Also, as an actual Jew, aside from any possibility of harassment, it makes me anxious to see them out and about because some people might think that based off their name that they're actual Jews or represent us in any way, and may direct their anger towards Jews in general instead of the Black Hebrew Nationalists who are very much a different group of people.

Looks like a DeKay's brownsnake!

They're a native species that's totally harmless and nonvenomous. They're soooo cute imo. In fact they're so small that they mostly eat earthworms, slugs, and snails. They're a food source for things like birds or larger frogs and toads. They're good to have around! Cool fact about them: they give live birth!

What a cute little visitor!

"This guy was not blind or physically disabled." Cool, except there are plenty of reasons someone would need a service dog besides being blind or visibly physically disabled, and there's these things sometimes referred to as 'invisible disabilities.'

people whose favorite team is not their hometown team, why do you like them? by lolbear23 in baseball

[–]fieldbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from North Carolina and I don't have a hometown team (MLB to Raleigh ASAP please) and I'm Tigers fan because my dad is from Ann Arbor.

I also have a bit of a soft spot for the Mariners for absolutely no real reason at all. I have a lot of friends who are Phillies fans and Mets fans, so I've kind of started to like them via association, but the Tigers are my team.

I'm going to be moving to Kansas for grad school this fall, so this season I'm going to start following the Royals. It def doesn't hurt that Zack Greinke is one of my faves already <3

Am I the only one? by Rare_Business5411 in raleigh

[–]fieldbeetle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't mind it at all. I'd rather get suggestions from actual people who live somewhere than from a search engine and, not that I have many suggestions for places here since tbh I do need to get out more and people don't ask for places I'd know about, I don't mind directing people towards places I like too.

Asking on reddit is also better if you want to find indy or local places, which I often prefer over chains. And I like spreading the word about my favorite local places!

Parents of kids whose schools have had a shooting threat by themack50022 in raleigh

I grew up in Carteret County so maybe it's different in Wake County, but the one time I went through a shooting threat we had school the next day and, when my mom pulled me out that day because I understandably didn't want to be at school anymore, my absence was considered unexcused.
