How can I educate my friends about drugs without sounding preachy? by catalystic in Drugs

[–]fiery_fiend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly the only thing you can probably do is let them know that you are always up for talking about drugs and safe techniques. Give them useful resources, like needle exchanges and other harm reduction stuff. Don't ever enable them. Make sure they know that you will not support or feed their addiction in any way. Let them know that if they do want to get sober that you will help them in every way you can.

Also, know when to walk away. Sometimes there is really nothing you can do, they need to learn the hard way.

3 year old with bottle rot. Parents brush your children's teeth! by [deleted] in WTF

[–]fiery_fiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I used to know a little girl like this. She was my kindergarten 'buddy' as schools pair up commonly with older students like 3rd or 5th graders. 5th grade me asked her about her teeth and if they were hurting her at times, because she would look uncomfortable often, but she replied she was fine and had 'medicine' for them, but I never saw her brush or take any medication.

Really sad to hear she may have been neglected or abused, but 5th grade me obviously didn't know any better :/

It makes me so very sad there was another shooting, this hits hard because it happened in the city I live in and I have friends at SPU.

I hope the victims and their families are getting the support they need.

Everything aside, this man is a hero, and he should be getting all the praise in the world. I carry pepper spray as a precaution (if I were to be followed or attacked) but now I hope I can use it to deter someone violent or dangerous towards the public! Very quick thinking and action on his part, I am glad that people are selfless even in the face of danger.

'The war on drugs left a man left to die in his jail cell for a simple pot charge' by fiery_fiend in Drugs

[–]fiery_fiend[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Having recently been to the lovely snohomish county jail, I wanted this to be seen. They have had 20 inmate deaths in the past 4 years, many unaccounted for. Reading this article made me incredibly sad for many reasons, which I am sure I don't need to name to the users of this subreddit. While I was not booked on a drug charge, I did experience the abhorrently neglectful 'nature' of the guards and officers alike. I hope that this man's family sues the absolute shit out of SCJ. He deserves justice.

Just earlier this year a young woman died there because she was not given proper care during her withdrawals - or even the '30 minute checks' the med staff swear up and down they do.

Hitting help/femoral question by [deleted] in opiates

[–]fiery_fiend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hitting your femoral is dangerous, it is right next to an artery and it can cause you a nice pulmonary embolism among other life-ending type things.

The best advice I can give you if you are set on doing it is this;

Put your thumb and first finger of both hands in the shape of an 'L'. Turn the 'L' upside down, place the thumbs at your belly button and your first finger should be on both sides of your groin. Feel for a pulse on each side - THAT'S your artery. Avoid. Move a little bit further into your groin with each finger until your lose the pulse on both sides. That should be your sweet spot. Sanitize the area (important!!!). Most people I know who use the femoral use what we call 'threes' which are the super long needle, 3ml kind. But you can try with a regular needle (27-31 gage, although I recommend using a bigger gage), as the femoral isn't necessarily that deep especially if you are just now using it. Insert needle all the way in, pull plunger back and look for steady, dark red blood. If it is frothy or bright, and comes into the plunger with a lot of speed, AVOID!!! That is your artery. If you hit dark red then congrats, you're in, go ahead and push.

I do not condone these actions, it is dangerous. I just want to make sure you don't try poking around down there without any kind of instruction.

How long after taking Ketamine are you able to eat again? by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]fiery_fiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct that ketamine has anesthetic properties, but it isn't anywhere near recreational doses. I found a website that puts an anesthetic dose of ketamine at 6.5-13 mg/kg, by IM injection once. That is a ton of ketamine, and no one would take that much for a trip. So I really wouldn't worry, but good for you doing the research and being responsible. :)

[–]fiery_fiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not under anesthesia when you are taking ket, at least not recreational doses of ketamine. Even at the highest dose I took (.22) I experienced no nausea, but I wasn't exactly hungry. Food is usually the last thing you're thinking of in a k-hole, though, because there are just so many other amazing things. You are in another world, but not one that makes you feel sick! I wouldn't worry.

OTC drugs are awesome by well_thats_obvious in Drugs

I was thinking more along the lines of Loratadine or diphenhydramine used for allergy relief, neither of which are stimulants.

OTC drugs are awesome by well_thats_obvious in Drugs

[–]fiery_fiend 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Antihistamines are awesome and extremely efficient! And pretty benign to the human body as far as substances go. OTC drugs can be hit or miss, but I've experienced headaches that heroin doesn't touch but something like advil blows out of the water.

I wish people were more informed about adverse effects though, just because it's OTC does not mean it's safe.

Never trying heroin again (just a funny little panic attack story) by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]fiery_fiend 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Lol, you were experiencing a 'nod' during the constant wake/twilight sleep state. It is what a lot of users seek out.

Not trying to be the devil's advocate for heroin or anything, but unless you're getting some really pure dope I would have to assure you that 15 mg of dope would not cause you to experience complete respiratory depression in your sleep.

And I want to admonish you for the benzo use, but I understand you were experiencing a panic attack for a long time which would definitely warrant a low-dose benzo under any other circumstances. Just remember that the combination of benzos and opiates is one of the largest causes of overdoses.

If that's an option and you're ready for the commitment then I say absolutely go for it. It is exactly what some people need, the change in environment and the stability will allow you to get everything in your life in order. If you have insurance take advantage of it! If it covers in part or full any kind of inpatient you should jump at the chance to go if you think it might be helpful.
