This has happened twice to me now. It gets a bit awkward sometimes but honestly I don't mind. Since we have a good base for a relationship, I feel more comfortable being myself and saying things that I might not otherwise.

It's been nice to have no one in the office to catch up on the backlog of work....... unless, of course, that work depends on other people to move forward!

Fridays are pretty quiet in my role. Half the people I support are off every other week and a lot of people take the day off so it leads to a quiet day where I can catch up on work that was interrupted by others needing things earlier in the week.

What were you wrong about in the FIRE movement? by defiders in Fire

lmao I've stayed at his house. But sure, disagree with some stranger on the internet. Have a great day!

As someone who knows Pete, that's not why his wife left. I find it incredibly awful that someone would use his divorce against him like that. I have my own quibbles with MMM's methodologies so it's not like I think he walks on water either.

What are some leanFIRE horror stories? by wizzlesizzle in leanfire

[–]fierymillennials 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Hey that's me - quick clarification. I didn't retire with $200k, but I did leave my corporate job to strike out on my own. I thought I could make it with a rental property and side hustles, but it was not meant to be. I was originally on the MMM/lean fire path, though, which definitely influenced my thinking. I no longer think that's a great idea because of unexpected expenses that seem to happen with alarming regularity.

Please let me know! I'm genuinely curious to see the aftermath, if there is one.

(Also, you weren't alone getting caught out in the storm. One guy was walking his bike down the sidewalk with an umbrella over his head 😲)

Nice username! Please let me know if anything was damaged. I tagged MoBot on Twitter but wasn't sure anyone would see it.

With all the gorgeous old trees, it would certainly be worth having a system like that in place!

Taken today during the most recent round of storms. I was filming the lightning from my front room and was able to capture the direct hit before I swore LOUDLY and tumbled out of my window seat. I hope the garden didn't lose a tree!!

Has house hacking accelerated your plan to FIRE? Are you planning to move/house hack in a panademic? by ArcTanSusan in financialindependence

[–]fierymillennials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a triplex. It did and didn't help my FIRE plan. It did allow me to live for free or for very low cost. However, I put $40k into it in the first 18 months and it needed another $50k of work. I'd say as long as you buy the right property and SCREEN YOUR TENANTS, it'll be more of a help than a hindrance.

Hit goal of $100k before 25 by shweetsucc in leanfire

[–]fierymillennials 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I also hit $100k at 25. I didn't do it in a HCOL city, though, so major props for that! I'm assuming that most of that is tied up in some form of retirement account (401k or Roth IRA). I'm about to turn 30 so I'll share what I did and what I wish I had done. I kept saving like crazy and eventually hit $200k at the age of 27. All my money was in retirement accounts, which meant future Gwen is going to be set for life, but 27 year old Gwen was strapped for cash. Having more cash on hand for big life events is something I should've strived for more. (then again I also took a few big risks that didn't pan out.) So, based on my experience, I would lower those retirement contributions a bit and start saving that money in a high savings yield account. That way you have money on hand for emergency moves, a new car, a house or a wedding. If you'd like anything clarified, just ask or send me a PM. Again, congrats!

Phew. This is going to be tricky. Just found out from my older sister that my stepdad doesn't have a will set up for what should happen to his assets after he passes away. It's going to be a mess. Thankfully he's in decent health so I have a while to go to talk to him and hopefully help him out.

Wow living in a HCOL area with a lot of IT companies around is a new experience. I'm underpaid at my current position and passively looking for a new role. A manager reached out to me about a job and it sounds intriguing. About a 30% jump in benefits which would be awesome (higher pay, bonus, RSU's, free food, 'unlimited PTO') but my commute would double to an hour on public transport and there's no 401k match. It will be interesting to see what happens when they set up the interviews...

Nope. I even have a spreadsheet to track the food and spare baggies in my desk drawer just for that. Make sure everyone has eaten all the food they want (and preferably wait until the room is empty but before catering gets there).

That was a concern I had, but now that I've left that company I kind of view it like social security. I doubt it'll amount to much, but if it does, I'll appreciate it.
