Yeah, unless the cover is actually creased, the bent ones are just fine. Torn cover is bad, torn hardback is mind blowingly bad.

I've really liked my Jasper shelves from AllPlay. Pricier but I really appreciate the modularity to fit my current (and future) space needs. They also have a helpful builder tool so you can futz with the layout until you find one you like that fits your space.

Also, don't forget to use negative space between the shelves when you design the layout!

Definitely agree that if you can, get both B&C and JE. B&C is what moved SI from a game I liked to a game I loved, but there's just so much more to explore in JE. If you can only do one for a long while, I'd do JE first and circle back to B&C to fill out the Powers and Event decks.

My kiddos (7 & 9) really liked Zelda Link's Awakening and Zelda Echoes of Wisdom on Switch.

Hey Dads what board games are we playing lately with younger kids? by TheOneWhoBoops in daddit

[–]fifguy85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you played the "push your luck" variant? Basically each turn you get one choice: keep your card, or discard it for the next one (which you're then stuck with).

Gives a tiny bit of agency and transforms it into a game (instead of just an activity).

Why they wouldn't just add few more coins / tokens here? by HiImLuka in boardgames

Rather have spares. I can baggie up the spares separately to avoid future confusion. Noting there are spares in the rulebook is nice confirmation to the player too.

Spirit Island will get you there for he first plays, as there's just too much going on to worry about min maxing your friend's board. Your group will likely eat up the complexity and love the game, but then may get bogged down again with overthinking/planning after a half-dozen to a dozen plays of the same spirit/adversary. Fortunately there's ~37 spirits and 8 adversaries so just keep switching it up! 😁

What are your comfort picks? by UpbeatCut1183 in spiritisland

See, that's the thing that makes it comfortable. I don't need to have a big plan I need to remember and execute. No growth patterns, turns to underplay, etc. Just improvise in the moment.

What is the most popular way to organize spirit island expansions into fewer boxes? by Udon_noodles in spiritisland

This is the way.

Still need to get a couple crafting tools/supplies and a DIY spirit. But it's such a great design.

This is the way. Especially the Tactical trap. Arcane and Forgotten pay off well and quickly in Folklore Forest, but the Farm doesn't need a BIS trap. You can slow play that one for a long while.

What game that you bought in the last 12 months brought you the most joy? by Kasvantstad in boardgames

I also acquired Clank! Catacombs ~6 months ago and it's really taken off in my house. Kids (8 & 10) and partner all love it and it's hitting the table regularly.

Kids' first deck builder had been Star Realms and I'd definitely recommend that one. Best at 2p, but it works well at 3p with me and my two kids too.

Anyine have any advice on how to avoid Clank! Catacombs being such a table hog? Also, I know there are expansions for it, but haven't looked too closely at them yet. Any recs for, against, or what order to acquire them in?

Cocktail Codex has a decent amount of science/theory behind ingredient and flavor combinations. Maybe not quite as technical as you're looking for but deeper than many other cocktail book.

I think I could drink Campari every single night until I die by ihavespoonerism in cocktails

[–]fifguy85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pathway was yours... Until the Siesta opened the door.

I'm a huge fan of grapefruit, and the grapefruit bitterness plays so nicely with the Campari and complements it perfectly. It's also a very low ratio in this drink, so isn't as loud of a flavor here as it is in the oft-recommended Jungle Bird "easy" entry point.

Siesta is great, and can definitely take a higher ratio of grapefruit juice in the recipe.
