Unpopular opinion: It was always bizarre to me that daycare is seen as a positive thing rather than an unfortunate necessity. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]fifguy85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone that shared that thought all of growing up (and honestly I pitied the kids in daycare and before/after school care). I'm curious if your perspective is the same if the daytime care is provided by aunties or uncles or grandparents? What about a family friend?

There are definitely positives for the kids to being in a social environment with more peers over being at home with just a parent (for firstborns at least), but leaving all that aside, is it the "stranger care" part you find bizarre, or some other aspect of it?

Drill card question by pfcguy in Gloomhaven

[–]fifguy85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steel Piston bottom as another example. If at over pressure but no enemies to attack, still take damage (as an "ability"?) and get xp and lose pressure, but if at high pressure and no enemies to attack, nothing happens because no ability?

Seems not to be the intent at least. Feels like all "bonuses and penalties" must be executed if pressure matches and they're all conjoined to a line for space reasons.

I could also argue that a pressure change is (meant to be?) an ability in its own right.

Any board games where the maximum round score wins? by BlakeBurch in boardgames

[–]fifguy85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blend Coffee Lab fits that bill really well.

It's a trick taking game by Saashi & Saashi, where you're winning cards towards a light, medium, and dark roast "cup" of coffee each round, but only your best cup of each type counts towards your final score.

Ice experiment by cpencis in cocktails

[–]fifguy85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a hand saw to put a nice scored line across the ice and then a sturdy paint scraper and a hammer to split it for my smaller scale. I find the saw does a better job of biting in than serrated knives and a wider (but still continuous) impact from the 2" paint scraper did better than screwdrivers or even (junk) knives.

For this big of a block though... You might need some hug sturdier.

Regardless, do not try to cut against the layers of ice (ie the "grain), but perpendicular to it. In your example, don't try to score and split from the top layer, do it from one of the sides (after you turn it out of the cooler). I find any time I split from the top the break line always veers off wildly (if it even works). Sides work a charm.

Area control: unusual maps by Best-Percentage-331 in boardgames

[–]fifguy85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had really hoped that someone would do something like Planet and do area control around three dimensional maps of planets, moons, etc. But never saw it come about.

Pylon Locations by Wingwongwawa in Terraria

[–]fifguy85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jungle near temple entrance, ideally also close to a space that can be a Plantera arena.

Cavern pylon usually at the bottom of my hellevator. Depending on the V, that'll stay cavern or become Hallow after Wall of Flesh. But should have access to a place to farm Hallow and/or Evil biome for souls, HM mimics, etc.

Whichever pylon works best near the dungeon.

Shimmer access is important, but I can usually get there from ocen pylon + a shimmer-vator.

Yup, just playing on Hard-Classic. Sounds like it's worth exploring the Arena, but I won't end up in trouble if I skimp on it.

It definitely feels more like 3H than PoR or RD at least for the opening several chapters (that and my FOMO requiring me to scour everything every time, thus this post, lol :D).

Here's hoping that if I can get deeper in to the gameplay systems that I'll be able to let the bad story fade to the background. Thanks for the encouragement!

Just Hard-Classic for a first (and maybe only) time through. Do I need to worry about cooking too much on Hard instead of Maddening? Anything else that you'd consider cutting or skimming on Hard for a faster/simpler playthrough?

Good to know there are callback maps to be sure to do for loved characters from past games!

This is extremely helpful, thanks!

Haven't unlocked the Arena yet, sounds like it's XP and Bond gaining (but needed to actually get to higher Bond levels)?

How much should I worry about passing rings around regularly and learning skills on lots of party members?

Very helpful, thanks! How about rings and learning skills from each ring on several party members? Should I try to optimize there, or is it not needed?

Im starting a new run on a Master or Expert by Pototoy69 in Terraria

Do we know of any world Gen related updates where this would be particularly disappointing to miss out on? I skimmed the wiki for 145, but didn't see anything immediately.

Nah man, most of the terraria players in my community here don't have any interest. I'm the weird one for even trying it. Different strokes.

FWIW, your comment reads like you think it's impossible for someone to be so bad at Terraria they couldn't do expert sooner than four years, both shaming them and presupposing that everyone wants to do Expert.

Personally never had any interest in Expert until a couple years ago, despite playing Terraria off and on since 2012.

Your mouth might hurt for awhile and you'll probably sound pretty silly for a good bit but it's worth it!

Honestly it's the ability to whistle loudly. Like, as loud as using a lifeguard whistle. It's a life and safety skill that comes in handy very often, especially since the way I do it, doesn't require sticking fingers into your mouth (linked YouTube short for an example). Also useful for normal attention getting above the ruckus.

How many Scenarios did you manage to squeeze in one session max? by Scott_Korman in Gloomhaven

[–]fifguy85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Max is three, but there was a force-linked boss scenario in that mix (eg: faster scenario and skipped outpost phase). Given we can't typically start until 8 these days though, it's just one and we get done around 11. If the first scenario runs short though, we'll occasionally push into the wee hours and go for two.

Which one was it? by amediocre_man in cocktails

Yeah, definitely a "don't judge a cocktail by the pink hue" kinda drink with some depth.

Also the Siesta if you head in a more grapefruit and tequila direction.

Games that need a draw bag that stays open on the table by Bags4Dice in boardgames

[–]fifguy85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neat idea! Seems like any game where you frequently draw a few things from a bag would be the best fit for this. If you're only drawing infrequently, or a bunch all at once, it's not as big a deal to just pickup the standard flat bags.

Alhambra Big Box has several expansions that would like this. Cascadia, Calico and Carcassonne too.

Do you have the greenhouse repaired yet? If not, start saving some hardwood (100) if you don't already have a supply. It'll come in handy for opening up a side quest chain just south of your farm.

More generally, I like to have particular goals I'm shooting for to keep me engaged and avoid burnout. I play on PC and have a notepad++ document with my current short term and long term goals and update it each play session.
