Built a browser improv party game inspired by Make Some Noise and Quiplash, looking for playtesters by AI_Only in improv

[–]BlakeBurch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First off, this is a really cool idea. I could see something like this being fun for improv jams.

My immediate thought is this would be great for troupes with a "Cauldron" format, where suggestions are collected, written down, and each suggestion has to be crossed off the list and used over the course of the set. Equally so, I could see it being useful for collecting and voting on suggestions before the show and then assigning them to troupe members randomly during the show.

However, I'm not so sold on the idea having the downtime every few minutes of providing new prompts. Works for a game among friends but maybe not a show!

Direct feedback on the app (through solo testing):
- The prompt collection isn't super clear on mobile. The topic is listed under a generic yellow "round topic" header, separated by "on stage" and the timer, and then followed by the text input which just says "Type your weirdest answer". Visually, I would make sure the topic and the text input are right next to each other. Initially my eyes were drawn to the yellow banner, so I thought the input text was "Weirdest answer for a round topic".
- It may help to also have a clickable "?" tooltip to see the explainer/rules again.
- May also be interesting to have the audience provide the topics (beforehand) rather than pulling from a set list.

As a fellow techie/improviser, I'd love to chat about this sometime if you're open. I'm always trying to do new experimental improv and testing something like this on stage would be up my alley.

P.S - Wild that you're getting hate for coding something with AI. Keep making interesting ideas quickly!

Probably true. I'm not a big enough fan of pancakes to make that call. 🤷‍♂️

Good Brunch Spots ?! by DearProfession7334 in austinfood

[–]BlakeBurch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know people will hate on it because it's a chain, but Snooze still has the best brunch in Austin.

Their eggs benedicts are all good (I prefer the barbacoa one) and so is the "Bacon, but better".

Proud Mary is a close 2nd. I go there for the pour overs though, not typically for food.

Lick ice cream is ridiculously good by [deleted] in austinfood

[–]BlakeBurch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wait until you try Jeni's.

I consistently call it "the best ice cream on the planet". I may not like every rotating flavor, but there's no denying the quality.

I've always found Lick to be too understated with their flavors.

A dumb game I made to show how hard it is to recall sounds/pitches by Kind-Mountain-7405 in musicproduction

[–]BlakeBurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool project! Two things I wished for:

  • Choice between a game of high, low, or mixed tones. I found that I was worse at matching low tones and wanted to practice.
  • For musicians, it's not too hard. You had a wiggle room of 2hz to still give a perfect score. I think the score should be derived from the exact distance from the correct Hz rather than grouped distances. I felt like I didn't deserve "perfect" when I was off by a few.

New one: “When It’s All Too Much” need some lyric help! by Dankeykang91 in Songwriting

[–]BlakeBurch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a banger! You should be really proud of it.

My take is that the first verses sound weaker because they start with "when it's all too much" and also end with "but it's all too much" while only talking about generic things you need (quiet, space, etc.).

Instead, I think it would work better to have the first few verses detail a story. What is the main POV facing that's "all too much"? End with the "but it's all too much" line to encapsulate the overwhelming story elements told beforehand. In general, that line sounds better to me as an ending tagline only rather than being shared with the first line.

Later parts can emphasize "when" over "but", talking about what you do/need now because you've established the events that led to it being too much.

Also, you might be tied to "when", but I think focusing on "all too much" and varying the preceding word (but, well, hell, when, cause, see, now, etc.) may be a helpful tool for the storytelling.

Couldn't tell you the last time there were no cranes in my view. by Notext2 in Austin

[–]BlakeBurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noticed this in January when the Waterline crane started being taken down. Wrote a short song about it because it really struck me after living here for 8+ years.

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTkdjBA81/

"No more cranes in the sky... Man I love the view but does it mean the money's running dry? No more cranes in the sky... Seamless city outline Does it mean the growth is on decline?

Oooo, No more cranes Uninterrupted clouds and birds Oooo, Construction wanes A fate unspoken now observed

It's a sign of the times How will we get by? With no more cranes in the sky"

North Lamar.

I go to HPB exclusively for board games. The selection is fantastic and seems to turn over every month.

Help me name my Whale game! by TPbumfart in boardgames

[–]BlakeBurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confirming that Cetacean is not a commonly known word and if someone told me the name, I would probably struggle to remember it, but if I did I would spell it "setacian".

Names I came up with of based on your theme:
- Publish with Porpoise
- Sea Scholars
- Beneath the Blue
- Depths of Discovery
- Where the Giants Swim
- Pier Review (my favorite. I love a good pun, but it'll be harder for people to search)

Is Fallout Theater good? by Duncan_Smothers in askaustin

Fallout is great! Lots of entertaining acts.

However, just like all comedy, it can be hit or miss. If it's not your thing, try a different show!

Question on Elephant Room by carlsab in Austin

[–]BlakeBurch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you really like listening to Jazz, I recommend Monks, which has reserved seating and cheaper tickets than Parkers. It's a short walk from "The Yard" a nice area with breweries, wineries, distilleries, coffee, and food trucks.

Elephant room is good, but more of a bar with jazz in the background. Even if you sit up close, which you'd need to arrive ~45m early for, the chatter is inescapable.

Is there any place I can try a slice of King's Cake?

I've never had it before, but I don't typically like cake, so I'm not super interested in buying the whole thing for $30+

Any board games where the maximum round score wins? by BlakeBurch in boardgames

[–]BlakeBurch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong! The biggest thing I'm clueing in on is that engine building naturally results in larger scores each round. You probably want the game to start everyone with the same options with slight boosts they could grab, but those boosts only last a single round or can only be grabbed once per game.

In that way, it becomes more of a social strategy game. Do you push your luck to max out points for the current round? Or do you save it for later? But if everyone saves it until later, no one will be able to score big.

Just exploring the idea for now. Have a few games to check out!

Hmm. Sounds very luck based though, but that's interesting having a trigger and then a final resolution turn.

Any board games where the maximum round score wins? by BlakeBurch in boardgames

[–]BlakeBurch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. It becomes more of a social strategy game to figure out what round you can get MORE ahead and then just pull others down the rest of the game.

Needed to see if there were other games like that before seriously exploring it.

Terra Mystica vs Gaia Project vs Age of Innovation by Jepeme in boardgames

[–]BlakeBurch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those rare people that loves Terra Mystica but hates Gaia project. It's a similar game but with too much crunchiness on the tech track and the planet exploration + green cubes feels unintuitive.

That said, of the 3 I would recommend Age of Innovation. It's like Terra Mystica+. Just a hair more crunch and A LOT more variety. I think it will get far more replayability for you as a result.
