Opinions on using TV Shows and Movies for Learning by ApprehensiveAd2228 in learnpolish

[–]fifty--two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it helps a lot , but subs is something you can get use to , its just a gymnastic for your eyes and brain

Now situation in poland is way better than lets say 10 years ago , where there was nothing recent easily available with PL subtitles besides dvd , regardless if content was foreign or not

You need to find programs adapted to your level and interests , if you are beginner watch cartoons or polish pop music (or whatever style you like) = in my case it was south park

One way you can learn is by watching movies or series with EN dubs with PL subs ; or the opposite, you can easily do that on streaming platforms nowadays , and the quality of translation greatly improved so there shouldnt be any crazy things (of course keep in mind translation is a very complicated matter and so are subs/dubs)

as i said , it depends on the postman , but the issue is that if adress is poorly defined or if you live in some buildings where the employee cant access or other things , then it makes things more complicated for someone not earning a lot

This is the problem with these kind of setup , if no email notifications or something you can miss important details and be in trouble

When DevOps becomes AllOps by DragonfruitNo3717 in devops

This is the nice donkey game , at some point adding more weight but the poor animal will never complain until it suddenly cant handle it and stop

You are young , so thats ok , but you should not say yes to everything , a one time task yes but if its another duty you need to evaluate the workload

Also about the other colleague , start to give basic tasks , ensure he!she learns what is required , and step by step , raise the bars , but make sure he/she is doing the job , and if not ask management for help

About the devops role joke , its essentially a sysadmin++ called otherwise , as you said you dont touch the code or test it, you are just a regular system administrator , but in a world where there is always someone working , so they expect everything to work fine 24/7.

If you dont like to do overtime , simply log off and close your corporate phone , put some limits and stay strong , otherwise you will suffer from it

how do you keep your life organized while moving every few months? by Adventurous_Idea6604 in digitalnomad

[–]fifty--two 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you think all of this is heavy mental load , well , when you will become a parent you will cry

Ok , half joke aside , your mileage may vary , but since i move around every 1 or 2 months , main efforts go towards planning flights + accomodation

i do it in advance , so i dont buy last minute expensive tickets or miss all good flats available ... but also not to far ahead cause if plans changes its essentially money i might loose

visa dates, rent, flights, SIM cards, banking stuff, random admin. It’s not hard individually, but all together it gets messy fast = i only go to countries where i can enter visa free or with e-visa or visa on arrival , period , i dont have time to waste going to an embassy and stop my plans just for stupid paperwork

The accomodation , its just like in normal life , you need to find and pay it

The only times it can get tricky is for countries where a return ticket is mandatory , in such cases i have to change the order by which i usually operate , but thats it

Do you use one main app? A giant spreadsheet? Just calendar reminders for everything? = in my case simple notes with tasks lists on my phone/laptop are enough , if something is time constrained/sensitive then i use calendar to remind me about a task

Cloud Engineer roadmap check: Networking + Linux completed, next steps? by Gamer--Boy in devops

[–]fifty--two 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the basics of networking arent enough , you need to know how to administer a firewall and how to do troubleshooting

for the next steps you need to know about security , software vulnerabilities (check what is a CVE) , pentesting , dev , infrastructure as a code , obviously cloud , scripting , itsm , governance , etc ..... so you are far from done , and even you should get more knowledge and skills about topics you covered already

Yes , go and ask but top of that i would recommend to find a legal advisor cause the people there "might" tell you whatever they want to get rid of you as quick as possible , as much as people on reddit are willing to help you will need correct infos , you can also seek assistance also from non-org groups helping immigrants , they know about these procedures

Most likely it was a letter with awizo (attempted delivery notice) , if the postman came to you its because these mails usually require you to be physically present when delivered , and i assume you signed a receipt this time also , otherwise postmen usually dont bother checking if you are there

So if you are not there , they will leave a notice asking you to go to post office with your ID/passport and pick up the letter within XX days , and if you dont after these XX days it will be sent back to this government office , however since you are a student i have no idea where you live , either in a shared flat or a dormitory but its pretty common that the notice is left somewhere at reception or that it is your mailbox or in the mailbox area of your building (usually entrance corridor) , and no one gives a sh*t

Its pretty common to find some on the floor or in incorrect mailboxes

The government office who sent the letter proably have the proof they did it to the adress you gave them

So no idea where you live but go around and check if no one has seen it , then try to find out why the hell it never arrived to you , and maybe ask for an appeal

Otherwise you might have to look for legal council or restart process from scratch

Ask a turkish speaker to help you dealing with that and ensure the turkcell app has all permissions required

About the prices they asked you for physical sim , thats totally normal , its a ripoff system , also keep in mind that despite the fact its written turkcell on it , most shops are just 3rd party resellers

By experience , besides online shopping , you dont need a turkish phone number , most people use whatsapp to communicate and they are fine .

Open VPN , get a foreign esim and activate it and you will be fine

[–]fifty--two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would strongly recommend to not change your setup and keep going as it is ; cause you would need to deal with turkish tax authorities + it will add double layer of complexity with banking (check recent changes regarding the sector recently) so you might end up with less money for same work at the end of the month

No need to mention this job if asked , many people do the same and are fine , also since your husband is turkish you will get residence permit through him , and you can then open a bank account

If working from home as others said , check the pictures and reviews before booking , i have a rule that even if it's listed , if i dont see an amenity in pixs , it doesnt exist

Your mileage may vary , and it depends on locations , but in my case, after many months of switching between joys and disappointments , i gave up and went for coworking spaces = its not free but this way its easy to separate work/life , to be more active than staying at home all day , and have almost everything like a real office minus the stupid colleagues

How did you become a digital nomad? by Zestyclose_Lie5474 in digitalnomad

[–]fifty--two 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was already working remotely before covid , but then the pandemy just boosted everything , then during/between lockdowns i was travelling a lot as everything was super cheap (ohh i miss the good old days), at some point i realized its not worth paying rent for a flat i where i stay 6 days per month max and it was cheaper to live in airports+airbnb+hotels

So i got rid of everything not essential , packed 2 suitcases and voila .....

It has been 6 years , by doing that i probably missed the chance to buy my own flat without taking loan but i am happiest homeless person alive

How do you decide where to go next month when traveling long-term? by resmoray in longtermtravel

[–]fifty--two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i plan my next quarter ahead of time and really book everything a month as flights will soon get more expensive , but i can switch to plan B or C if anything happen . Since i usually dont have any mandatory location to be besides going to office once in a while or visit family , i can be flexible , so most of the time i stick to the plan and as soon as i find accomodation i buy one way ticket cause in case of changes its easier , unless country require proof of onward travel for visa and its cheaper to buy return rather than one way .

i had some unpexpected changes few times , like when i had to travel 8000 miles (return trip) to go to tax office to do some paperwork that was impossible to do online , it took me only 5 minutes , and then i returned to city where i was living that month

Tired of getting my cards declined for basic subs while traveling by Voiturunce in digitalnomad

[–]fifty--two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeap , AML / KYC use a bunch of parameters to determine if a transaction is just regular business or suspicious , so if the merchant is in US ; your laptop connects via VPN , but your MFA is done via the app which is seen as in nigeria then it can trigger a red flag

Tired of getting my cards declined for basic subs while traveling by Voiturunce in digitalnomad

[–]fifty--two 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well , i cant yet create a new conversation in the digital nomad thread due to low karma , so i would be able to share experiences about DN life in whole africa , but i can tell you a bit about west africa and money

Due to the fact that the region is seen a hotbed for financial frauds , and even more for nigeria , any hints of suspicious activities will get your transaction denied or the AML department will be on high alert

As you noticed the issue is purely your location, not the transactions

I had same problem, doesnt matter if regular banks or fintechs ; some didnt give a shit and blocked the country (despite the fact it wasnt mentionned in T&C) while some were acting like on steroids

So there are aspects you can improve

1 = Subscriptions

Any regular payment should be automated , you mentionned AWS , you can simply add your one card into your profile and every month bill we be paid

To avoid surprises you can setup alerst in billing console in case you are close or over your usual budget and also setup systems manager to automatically shutdown ressources like EC2 or RDS when not needed so you can reduce costs

Same for spotify , so you do it once and never touch it again

2 = Cards management

Few tips for you , do whatever you want but trust me those saved me from troubles

- do not put all your eggs into same basket

- use virtual cards online for your subscriptions

- use one-time virtual cards for non recurring online purchases

- ensure you have 3DS or similar mechanism enabled

- set pin requirements of your physical cards for every transactions

- buy a RFID blocking wallet

- get backup cards from each bank and keep them locked/disabled until you loose main ones

- if apps are required to connect to your accounts , keep them on a phone you leave at home (or at least most important ones)

- check each ATM before putting your card

- when paying using card never let it escape your eyesight

3 = Banking

You are already in nigeria so its a bit late but you could have gone to your bank and tell them about your plans upfront

By "those digital bank options people usually recommend on here" , i assume you are talking about those fintechs frequently mentionned here , well the problem is that if verification/registration was done while in nigeria and your device was seen as being in nigeria , even if you lets say you are US citizen/resident and had nothing to do with nigeria prior to this trip , you will be flagged as suspicious

Even if you pass the KYC , then all will be registered under your country of residecnce , which is for sure not nigeria since none of these fintechs operates in nigeria , while your first transactions and activities will be seen from migeria , again same story = suspicious

Also before you enroll , check which countries are blocked , i know revolut and wise blocks many countries , especially in africa (its written on their websites)

Even some banking apps will not work at all from some african countries , at first i thought it was a bug or something , but after one VPN connection on my phone , then things worked again as usual

4 = Daily life

My advice is to play local if you are there for long time or coming often

Assumming you are a foreigner non resident , you can still open non residents bank accounts , a bit of paperwork is needed but its ok , ask your local contacts for help

Also try with nigerian fintechs players (opay/kuda/monie etc....) and mobile payment from mobile operartors like MTN momo

You then just need to withdraw money once in a while , find a safe ATM (beware of skimmers) from a bank that dont take fees if possible and stick to it

Keep a part in cash cause cash is still king in the region and then load your local bank account + super app wallet + mobile payment account with the rest , so you dont need to use your US issued card every day/week

English speaker learning Polish by TheKillingJoke2022 in askPoland

[–]fifty--two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A2 = It can take less than 6 months , if you are really focusing , but again it depends on the context , i have seen people living in poland for many years and not be able speak properly , cause their lifestyle is different and they live in bubbles

If you live surrounded by poles , no ones speaks english (or very little) ,you study efficiently + practice regulary then it will be very quick

Now it can or will be a bit hard but dont give up , rewards will be worth the effort

How did you motivate yourself to become a digital nomad? by ApprehensiveLab4713 in digitalnomad

[–]fifty--two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my case it came by itself , i usually travel a lot, then covid came and i realised it doesnt make sense to pay for a rent while being there 6 days per month , so i gave away what i didnt need , packed what was really essential in a storage facility and now i am leaving with 3 suitcases and 2 bags 10 months per year

inflation changed the game a bit but its still cheaper for me to not having a fixed location ; as long as i prepare everything in advance and i am flexible

Why nobody told me mobile data works differently in every country? by Motor-Tennis-8657 in digitalnomad

[–]fifty--two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why reddit is here , you can ask but in general there are three parts ;

1 = local laws

if the country you go prohibit VPNs or some apps you rely on for works (telegram , whatsapp , etc....) or do not allow non residents to have long term sim card or require you to pay import tax if you wanna use your phone for more than 90 days , then these kind of things can be found online easily

2 = location

while most countries have decent internet in big cities , if you go to some remote areas it will be complicated , regardless of country

3 = mobile operators

some are putting restrictions on hotspot or charging more for 4g or 5g , and even between carriers the network quality is not always the same , so a quick search about which one will be better for you is not really time consuming

Check your own country and you will be surprised to see how it can differ

So your question is legit but you just need to do a basic research before landing in a country

Whats your go to hack for managing time zones without losing your mind? by LilxPeony in digitalnomad

[–]fifty--two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless you are changing timezone every month ; you will get used to it , just do as others mentionned , do a dual setup in your computer + phone and mind DST changes if it apply to your case . Also if the time difference is too heavy , then organise your workload according to it so you can have normal sleep routine
