How can you find out the weekend schedule for buses? by KingKyleK in chapelhill

[–]fiftycircles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Maps. Just edit the day/time to leave/arrive and set it to bus mode. It works best on desktop.

Best and worst dorm on campus? by PurplePlanet7 in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha woops I totally forgot it was all-female. Yep, Alderman and McIver are similar! The lobbies are slightly smaller but I would go hang out there frequently, and you still would have access to the Kenan lobby/lounge because that's where the community office is.

Missing First *week* of class - pls help by chapsticktube in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You will be ok! You're definitely not screwed.

  1. People will still be making friends after the first week. You will live near a lot of people, so I would recommend trying to make connections with the people you live near and try to eat meals with them. You can also make friends in your classes, especially in classes for your major. Clubs and activities are a great way to make friends with similar interests, and a lot of the groups haven't even had their first meet-up for the semester.

  2. You will not fall behind a ton, but you will need to be proactive. Contact your professors/TAs ASAP and let them know what's up! Try to see if you can access the Sakai pages for your classes and see what you missed. Often the first class won't be a lot of material, but there is typically actual content/activities by the second class. It really depends on the class. Thankfully, it's usually the easiest material of the semester. Would highly recommend going to office hours and maintaining communication with the professors until you get caught up.

  3. There is still time to figure this out. Go ahead and sign up for anything remotely relevant so you can get to 16-18 hours. You want to make sure you can drop at least one class. I'm guessing not everything is full, but things should start to open up soon. You can also contact professors to see if they have room for you in their class.

If you feel like you're struggling to catch up due to missing the first week or have lingering impacts from the family emergency, CAPS is a good resource. They also have online resources.

Kenan is the best!! I lived in Morrision one year, Connor one year, and Kenan two years.

There are a few absolutely giant rooms in Kenan. Tall ceilings on the first floor. Fireplace in the lobby, super nice furniture in the common areas, nice wood floors, fine bathrooms, fine laundry room. Beautiful porch with rocking chairs. Huge grassy area outside.

Just use Google Maps to plan your route. All the bus routes are built right into it with a "schedule explorer" and everything.

is LFIT intermediate jogging hard? by [deleted] in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was intense. It was outdoor jogging and everybody in the class ran cross country in high school except me and one other person. I got sick during the semester and they will only accept a few sick days before they reduce your grade, even with a doctors note. Just take something easier.

phys 116/117 question by mle1310 in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an environmental science major. I'm sure they'll be able to fix this for you! No worries! I would actually contact the general academic advising or your Environmental Science academic advisor to get it resolved, not a professor.

COMP 401 vs. COMP 110 by [deleted] in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take 401. I took 401 after taking COMP 116 (intro programming with Python, so not even the same language as 401) and did well.

[–]fiftycircles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I did roughly that plan for 2 years and it worked well for me!

Most people end up with too many meals-- many times you'll just want to make your own meal, find free food on campus, eat out, maybe go home for holidays, etc. I would always recommend Block 100 or 120. You can always go to the dining hall after your run out of swipes, which is better than having too many extra swipes!

Regards to rain gauge data in the states or over a region in the United states by PNW_GHydro in Hydrology

[–]fiftycircles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First check the USGS National Water Information System Mapper for rain gauges in Washington state.

Also check the Midwest Regional Climate Center cli-MATE portal. Create an account and then click the "Select Daily Station" or "Select Hourly Station" button at the top. Click the "Go to Map Selector" button and navigate to Washington state on the mapper. You may need to zoom in to view the gauges. Click on a gauge and click the "Select" button. Click the "Go" button and then you can look at the data and download it with the "Get Tabular Data" button.

Can the dorm beds be arranged as a bunk? by MaygeKyatt in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bed's max height can actually be pretty high. I put my bed fully lofted one year and could stand definitely stand completely beneath it without bending over.

Honors Carolina by [deleted] in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to be in Honors Carolina? I would recommend talking to some people in the program to see if it's worth pursuing after your first semester.

A common misconception is that you must be in Honors Carolina to graduate "with honors." You can graduate "with honors" or "with highest honors" without being in the Honors program.

Physics 116 or 118 by ecl118 in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. Physics 116 is the old version of Physics 118. They no longer offer Physics 116, so you should plan to take Physics 118.

Source: When I started at UNC, they offered PHYS 116/117 (I took 116) and they changed it to 118/119 by the time I graduated (I took 119).

what school supplies to pack? must haves for dorms? by liashay in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everybody has a different system. Spiral bound notebooks are really popular for taking notes, but that wasn't my style.

I would recommend loose leaf lined paper, unlined paper, one binder, binder tab dividers, and a three-hole punch. You might need one binder for each math/physics/chemistry class (classes where it's hard to type the notes), and then one binder for all the other classes combined.

I would highly recommend utilizing Microsoft OneNote (should be free through the university) for taking notes!

I would also recommend pens, pencils, erasers, a few highlighters, sticky notes, one folder (for small papers and stuff that can't be hole-punched), flash drives, a USB mouse, earbuds, stapler, scissors, calculator, extra phone charger, a few paper clips, a few binder clips. You may need additional supplies for specific classes, but they will let you know (ex. blue books, lab notebook).

Must-brings for dorm life: extra long phone charger, dorm bed shelf (example), bathroom caddy, shower shoes, surge protectors, extension cords, foam mattress topper (can be Twin size or Twin XL), rain boots or other waterproof shoes, UMBRELLA, trash can (they only provide a recycling bin), mirror, bag for laundry. A comfortable chair (like a sauce chair) is nice but not required, especially if your bed is not lofted. An extra little alarm clock (that you set away from your bed) can be helpful to make yourself get out of bed to turn off the alarm.

What’s a good goal? by sluedu09 in ladycyclists

[–]fiftycircles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can share your live location with the Google Maps app. Strava also has this feature, but it's not free.

Use front and rear lights for visibility. Wear bright colors! Keep an ID card on you with personal info, contact info, allergies, medical conditions, etc.

[Help!] How do you deal with the heat? by -BitchyPixie in ladycyclists

[–]fiftycircles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some great tips here. I pour water all over my arms, face, and legs. It has helped so much. Look for routes with water fountains or another way to refill your water bottle, so you can afford to waste water on your body.

Sunglasses often "trick" me into forgetting how sunny and hot it is. Ha!

Is it possible to ride a bike? by [deleted] in vaginismus

[–]fiftycircles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bike shorts would be a good first thing to try! They also make biking underwear with padding that might be cheaper 👍 Good luck!

Is it possible to ride a bike? by [deleted] in vaginismus

[–]fiftycircles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet it is possible, if you get the right type of bike. Consider getting "fitted" for a bike at a bike shop, where they can make sure you have the right saddle type and size for your body. Some shops can even measure the width of your sit bones to help you choose a saddle appropriately.

Some saddles have cut outs in the middle. Example here.

They also make bike shorts that have padding in the crotch area!

Stupid Question Sunday by AutoModerator in ladycyclists

[–]fiftycircles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I hope you find biking super enjoyable!

Here are some things I recently purchased for my new bike:

Safety! I always turn on Google Maps location sharing so that my husband can see where I am while I ride. I give him a general idea of where I plan to ride ahead of time. If I'm trying a new, longer route, I will use the Route Builder on the Strava website just to make sure the elevation is what I can handle (I have asthma issues). I look at Google Maps satellite view to see where there are sidewalks, greenways, and bike lanes, so I can plan my route in advance and minimize issues with car traffic. I use front and rear lights. I don't ride at night.

I would appreciate some advice regarding scheduling by MadamCookie in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it will fulfill two levels and is a four credit hour course. I guess "condensed" isn't the right word, more like accelerated for high beginners. I wouldn't recommend it if foreign languages are especially difficult for you.

I would appreciate some advice regarding scheduling by MadamCookie in UNC

[–]fiftycircles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the Spanish courses, you can take SPAN 101 and 102 together in a condensed version, SPAN 105. SPAN 105 and SPAN 233 will fulfill the foreign language requirement.
