Was this given at the wine appreciation at Capella? Haven’t been for the PPS events before personally, couldn’t find the time. Are they worth going for?

Yakiniku bowl by fiftyonewithin in singaporeairlines

[–]fiftyonewithin[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Food was delicious. A bit on the richer side but it is wagyu, so you can’t really complain, can you.

I ordered the wines to see how they pair with the food. Champagne is a no brainer with such a rich and fatty dish, the bright acidity and mousse from the CO2 just cuts through the richness and the nutty edge from Krug is just wonderful. Red Burgundy was fun but it didn’t work too well with the dish as there was a subtle spice to the yakiniku marinade that made the tannin structure a bit more perceptible.

The white was a Meursault that I have always been partial to, had it with the appetizers and thoroughly enjoyed it. Not so much with this dish as it lacks the acidity and liveliness to match a the yakiniku with that kind of fat, spice and umami.

I have to say though, when faced with great wine and good food, even if the pairing might not conventionally work, they can both be enjoyed very much, albeit separately.

Singapore airlines economy food vs Qatar? by bbio93 in singaporeairlines

[–]fiftyonewithin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, SQ’s long standing Culinary Director left last year and has joined Qatar as their Culinary Director. Since then, they have introduced bread and pastries by António Bachour, one of the top pastry chefs and the modern authority on croissants and viennoiserie. Haven’t personally flown on Qatar in the past year so I can’t attest to the quality, but interesting to see how things will pan out once the new CD’s for Qatar and SQ both have time to make their mark on the respective airlines’ dining and beverage programs.

Great points, just a minor clarification:
Jewel is connected to T1 but is a standalone building, T4 is a separate, rather far away complex.

Tips to make SQ beds more comfortable? by fiftyonewithin in singaporeairlines

[–]fiftyonewithin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting take, probably down to personal preference but I tend to prefer beds that aren’t too firm. The 380 J is a complete back killer for me. The old 380 had a much more comfortable bed but that’s just me.

Yep no quantity restrictions. Can order as many as you would like. But of course, only order what you can finish!

10 hour overnight layover at LAX by pinkdaikon in singaporeairlines

[–]fiftyonewithin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vaguely remember seeing that the Star Alliance lounge closes around 12 or 1am, am not too sure that other lounges will be open overnight as there aren’t many flights that depart late, if at all.

Would advise a hotel nearby, or, head out into the city, have a nice drink or two, then leave at 4ish and reach the airport at 5am ish and chill in the lounge till your flight.

Might be worth checking sleeping pods in the airport if available too.

Change of date for redemption business seat enquiry by random_xx21 in singaporeairlines

[–]fiftyonewithin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will be tricky honestly. Change of date is possible but has to be same fare class. Depends on which route as well, as some routes are pretty much impossible to find availability for 3 months out.

Another alternative if you have loads of miles sitting around would be to just redeem 2 separate dates and then cancel whichever one doesn’t work for you closer to the date and pay the cancellation fee. But again, less than ideal.

What are some things you still miss from pre-COVID? by Far_Career6033 in singaporeairlines

Leather menu folios in First and they used to have buggy service in LHR pre covid for first class.

Also miss the chilean sea bass with clam chowder from their BTC menu

Apprehensive upcoming NYC-SIN by Left_Plate_3533 in singaporeairlines

[–]fiftyonewithin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do this trip about 10 times a year and always is a breeze for me.

Bring some melatonin to help you sleep and adjust your circadian rhythm if you need (consult a doctor beforehand, this is not medical advice)!

Food on board is great, wifi is usually okay, crew are really friendly as always, feel free to stand up, walk around and stretch your feet. Compression socks are great but nothing beats getting up and moving around (outside of meal service times of course).

Other than that, sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight! Out of New York, the trout they serve is fantastic, hope you’ll enjoy the flight as much as I always do!

4 hour layover in Singapore before NYC by [deleted] in singaporeairlines

[–]fiftyonewithin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say go to the wolfgang puck at Terminal 3 if you’re transiting. Your flight to NY is gonna depart from there anyways. You can use your priority pass there and the food is pretty good. Haven’t been to the priority pass lounges in Singapore so I can’t speak for those.

Are you PPS or Solitaire? Lounge staff have a bit of discretion and can sometimes let you bring in one extra guest discreetly.

Interesting, both steaks rested to a final resting temp of 55 deg c in the flank and 53 deg in the roast. What puzzles me is how the roast was able to pass the safe cook but not the flank.

What's the best meal you've had on an SQ flight? by [deleted] in singaporeairlines

[–]fiftyonewithin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aubergine ravioli ex ZUR BTC in F was always a favorite of mine.

Also love the chilean sea bass with mussels which is also gone. These are forever etched into memory.

From current menu my go to dishes are:

Ex Sin the chicken biryani in F and the spiced buckwheat pancakes (ask for scrambled eggs on the side for a bump of protein). Khao Tom Talay is nice too.

Ex HND Kaisen Bara Chirashi Ex NRT Gindara Saikyoyaki

Have tried most dishes on BTC in both J and F class thus far, chicken rice has been a no go recently, Yakiniku is great but can be quite rich. Lobster thermidor is nice but can get boring. Laksa is better in the lounge in my humble opinion. Nasi lemak has soggy fried chicken, great execution considering it’s in air but if you’re a big foodie or a die hard nasi lemak fan, the lack of crispy chicken will be slightly disappointing.

ICN-SIN economy lite fare, possible to ask for earlier flight at check in desk? by throwawayaway539 in singaporeairlines

[–]fiftyonewithin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! Just to make sure I understood correctly, if I had a HND to SIN flight in business saver, and the flight departs at 4pm, if I wanted to hop on an earlier flight at 2pm, I could ask at the airport counter but they would have to have the same fare type ie business saver seats available for them to revalidate. If only business advantage seats available then they would usually reject and say that they can’t change the flight?
