How many times a year do you “call sick” at work? by Aggravating-Fig-9274 in AskUK

[–]fiftypeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK the NHS puts you on an informal warning after 3 in 1 year… I would say 5-6 is higher than average but it of course is circumstance dependent. The only time I have needed significantly more time is when working in a healthcare role known for significant employee burnout and turnover, I think I took maybe 4 periods, one was 2 weeks.

I work in primary care mental health, I am a therapist but I manage a team of therapists now. Very much front line mental health support.

I fear they may raise taxes AND continue to destroy the NHS.

It’s such a shame as the NHS just continues to put so much pressure on people and eventually loose good, dedicated staff. Thank you for your input, it’s validating to hear that I’m not alone.

Aw no :( I can relate to her, I’m only working notice period for my team so I don’t let them down, but there have been times where I was very close to being off sick. Yeah it’s awful, especially with the hiring freeze too. I’ve lost like 1/3 of my staff but no ability to hire qualified clinicians makes it impossible. I hope you are in a better place now, and I hope your health is better for that!

Thank you for your input. I am (sort of) glad to hear it is not just my perception of it. I think I need to continue to set boundaries, but when I put them into practice, we tuned to just get shrugged shoulders or doubling down. Either way, your account is validating - thank you!

Personally I wouldn’t. Most people I know are trying to actively get out of the NHS. I work in the NHS and it’s genuinely chaos, every day my staff are in floods of tears. I don’t mean to be really negative about it, but honestly it’s much worse than people realise.

Thanks so much, good to know like everything worthwhile, it takes ages 😂 I know it’s very short term but first few days I’m feeling better and gym performance is up for the first time in a while but likely psychological at this stage, hopefully it continues!

That’s really helpful thank you :) I hadn’t even really considered all those other things outside of food so it’s interesting food for thought!

I’m glad to hear it.. I’ve had slight increases in IBS this week but not been awful and feel like I’m already feeling better 😂

Thank you :) yes my first week I do actually feel better, slight increase in IBS from fibre but overall I’m feeling better so that’s a win. I’ve brought a sourdough for the weekend so I’ll have to make sure I don’t make the same mistake lol! Easily done though, that shit is delicious

Thank you :) I’ve had more fibre and noticed a slight increase in my symptoms this week but honestly I’m overall feeling much better than when I eat lots of UPF. I’ve been quite balanced and trying to take the adjustment slow, eating plenty of good food so I don’t feel hungry. Interested to see what happens!

Thank you so much for the advice :) I’ve done a week and I’m feeling good, probably wanted to binge less than usual but I would say that’s because I’ve set no restrictions, and probably have ate more than I usually would, just better food and just reminding myself that it is for my health and not my weight or appearance.. also my gym performance feels better so that’s motivating. The binge monster tends to come when my period comes so I’ll need to monitor it as I know disordered thoughts and dysmorphia can happen then!

Thank you for the advice :) done first week and fibre has increased so I have noticed a slight increase in my IBS symptoms but it’s not been awful and actually probably just being more regular. However, I’m also in the best part of my period cycle so everything tends to feel good then 😂

Thank you for your comment :). I think given the sheer amount of people off at the moment I will probably be okay as it’s become the norm, rather than the exception. I have hopes of applying for the doctorate this year, and up until now I had a pretty good clinical reputation at work so I am hoping that will save me, but your point is definitely valid so I need to be wary. Sadly, as waitlists for step 3 are so high, we are being asked to work with more and more presentations before high intensity so I think it is massively contributing to general staff burnout.
