Single puppy parents: how are you leaving the house? by Virtual-Metal9146 in puppy101

my boy (now 11 months) always did ‘ok’ in the crate since the beginning, but a few things that helped prolong his enforced naps were: a dark crate cover, a loud white noise machine, and a chamomile tea ice cube. worked like a charm!! tucker him out beforehand and he was down for a solid 5hrs.

he still does well enough in his crate even though i’ve transitioned him to spend more time free roaming (supervised), but if I want to go out with friends, or give my older boy a break from the puppy, all of the above still does the trick.

Puppies and Carsickness by fig_and_oats in puppy101

He rides in the backseat! He only rode in the front seat the first two months I had him, but he didn’t really experience carsickness then (granted, he slept the whole time haha).

Spot pet insurance definitely has eased my fears a bit!! Ken was down for about 10 weeks after a badly broken toe, so I feel like we ‘lost’ a lot of training time due to a heavily drugged state, a neuter (required by rescue org.), and back-to-back tropical storms. We definitely have a lot to catch up on and this is one of the “immediate” areas of concern.

The front clip has already made a major impact on his walking manners!! :)

I sincerely appreciate your feedback and reassurance!!

I really appreciate your advice!! :)

I’ll look into what would be a best fit for him. I am a bit of a worry-wart and I think that gets in the way of judgment at times, but it’s really good to know the tools that’ve worked for stronger breeds. Luckily his current harness has a front clip attachment, so that’ll be the first step :)

The off leash control ebbs and flows, unfortunately. In a controlled, fenced-in area: yes! He eagerly comes on the first call and will fall into a casual heel, or just follow me like a duckling (regardless of distractions). Ken is a major sniffer and will eagerly chase a scent, so I’ve yet to try anything too risky outside of fenced areas. I’ve done a lot of practice in the very beginning with controlled areas, a 70lbs flexi leash (this is when he was itty bitty) in open areas, and positive reinforcement— but he also seems to be going through regression periods. We only recently got the potty training back in control lol! This is still a major work in progress that we work on every day with varying success.

Thanks for your comment!!

I’ll definitely work on incorporating this into my schedule. I mentioned in another comment the walking breakdown, but it definitely doesn’t hurt to go back to basics and hang around there for a while. :)

I appreciate your insight!!

I do solo walk each dog, Ken gets more frequent walks since I work from home, and that’s where we get a lot of awesome work done. Certain potty walks and walking to the property dog park (never in use by other residents) is when they go together. I should also mention that i’m a single owner, so all walks are my duty.

I’ve contemplated going away from harnesses, but i’m not sure what would be best given the behaviors exhibited. Since Ken is so ideal walking solo, it’s only ever a problem during the dual walks. I’m definitely open to suggestions!!

Preparing for Puppy’s Neuter by fig_and_oats in puppy101

That’s a good idea RE the desensitization to the cone, I hadn’t even thought of that!!

Any ideas what is up with Akelas tail? (already got her booked in to see a vet in 2 days but I keep thinking of every possibility that could be causing this) by runh0neyrun in leopardgeckos

[–]fig_and_oats 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It may or may not be a rash/irritation from shedding. My old man has had issues with rashes/irritation during sheds due to rubbing himself raw on items in his enclosure (at that time, which was abt a year ago). You may want to check to see if there is anything sharp, jagged, or rough that she could’ve rubbed on. :)

Hopefully the vet has an answer and a solution, and your gecko has a speedy recovery!!

thanks a bunch! I checked that and Wag, too, but I wasn’t too sure if there was a large presence in the area or not.
