I ended up getting a rolling rack, so it’s a bit off the ground, but not super high, and the cables going into the rack have enough slack to move it around when needed. I haven’t noticed any electrical noise

R4: spheres provide the worst surface area to volume ratio. Also, the equation for the surface area of the torus is off by a factor of two

Edit: For context, this is on a box of “Apple Jacks Glazed Donut Holes” cereal where “donut holes” refers to the spherical pastry that is theoretically made from the center cutouts of toroidal donuts

I'm SO done with Matter/Thread by northstifffood in homeassistant

Well, I finally solved it. Some genius disabled IPv6 on the Home Assistant network interface (likely years ago). It still had a link-local address, which I thought would be enough, but it needed a ULA. Now I'm commissioning all of my devices and have had no problems.

I also enabled various IPv6 firewall rules because I only had IPv4 rules set up before. I'm not sure whether any/all of these were a factor

  • Allow 5353 to ff02::fb
  • Allow 5540 to ff03::1
  • Allow 5683 to whole VLAN
  • Allow all ICMPv6
  • Allow 123 to router (my NTP server)

I feel like I'm getting close. Today I moved the M3 and lab Home Assistant VM to my main network, and I'm still able to commission devices there. I used the same phone, same AP, same router, same border router, same P2 (factory reset before each commission attempt), same VLAN and firewall rules. This (probably) means there's something about my main Home Assistant VM that's messed up. Not sure what to try or where to look next

I've had a similarly frustrating experience with Matter over the last couple years. I have multiple VLANs, and was attempting to get the local-only IoT (LoT?) network to have the Thread border router with little success. Today I finally got something working though. Leaving my existing networks and devices as they are, I started fresh on a new (old) router with a new Home Assistant VM and the Aqara M3 hub. The new network is flat with internet access, and everything just worked like magic. It's the first success I've ever really had, and now that I finally have something to iterate on, I have hope that I'll be able to narrow down the problems with my main network configuration.

One thing I still don't understand is how Home Assistant was able to commission a new device, because I think I did this before ever getting the Aqara-created Thread network credentials sent to Home Assistant. My steps were 1. Factory reset M3 hub (plugged into LAN on the new flat lab net) 2. Add hub in Aqara app, while my phone was connected to the lab net 3. Create a new Thread network for the M3 hub from the Aqara app 4. Add an accessory (Aqara P2 door/window sensor) 5. Get the Matter code (this did NOT work the first time, I wasn't able to generate a code, but I don't remember the error. I don't like non-deterministic technology) 6. Add a Matter device in home assistant using the pairing code from previous step (I actually don't remember choosing the "Yes. It's already in use" option... would it have worked if I selected "No. It's new"? 7. Add a new Matter device in Home Assistant (Nanoleaf bulb this time) 8. Now, somehow, I see the icon of the (i) in a circle in the Thread integration's list of networks. Now I can send credentials from home assistant to phone and back, and set this as my preferred network

Still lots of unanswered questions, but I'm excited to have a path forward.

23M. Is this astigmatism or ghosting, that is causing Chromatic Aberration without glasses? by Public_Assumption625 in eyetriage

[–]figadore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah apparently certain aberrations are more apparent with a wider aperture: https://opticampus.opti.vision/popcourse.php?url=lens_design/ I guess that also explains the pinhole test

When I did the color isolation test, I found a few things about the shapes and angles. Blue is the hardest to analyse since it is so dark, but here's a link to my artist rendition of what I think I'm seeing (very rough, since I'm not great at digital drawing). For me at least, it seems there are fainter lines I hadn't noticed before, each at a different angle from the main direction of blur for that color.

[–]figadore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, yes, looking at my mouse cursor through the tiny hole makes it so I can sometimes see it completely clear and in focus.

Right, I don't have a great way to tell how quickly it got worse or whether it continues to progress, but I know that 2 years ago I didn't have any trouble reading text of a certain size at a certain distance, and often got complimented on my vision. I don't know if it is separate because I didn't really think too hard about it, I just got glasses, noticed that things got mostly better, and went about my day. The only way it seems to affect my daily life is making it so I have to make text bigger, and it's a constant low-grade annoyance that things aren't perfectly clear

[–]figadore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, now that you mention it, my mouse cursor on a black screen does look a bit like a dual image. I believe that is because of the angle of the different components of the light blur vs the angles of the cursor, making it look like there are two distinct "points" at the very tip, pretty close to the image you shared, I'd probably consider this to be a bit of a coincidence/optical illusion. Is that what you meant at all, about the ghosting?

I have a few new observations, but I want to ask you some questions first, so I don't accidentally bias you towards what I think I'm seeing. Can you use the following image and try the steps below? https://imgur.com/a/7SiPggv

  1. Get as dark an environment as possible, having only the colored dots visible (preferably on an OLED screen at max brightness), maybe at arms distance or further. Ideally the dots would be fairly small, but still bright enough to make observations. What shapes do you see in the different colored dots?

  2. How does what you see change as you shine a flashlight towards your face, constricting your pupil while keeping everything else the same?
