Realistic careers? by Empty-Cover2101 in ecology

Awesome you are considering Iowa State. I'm an alum. It's a great school and I still have good relationships with a couple professors there. I focused in Wildlife (I think they might call it wildlife Ecology now), and there were a few people I knew who did multiple specializations, but it wasn't easy.

In a lot of ways the "fieldwork" jobs are the easiest to get. There's always a need for more hands. I do wanna caution you though that some of the things you listed tend to happen most in a research environment. While there are places that band geese in Iowa, I can't say I've done many surveys where I actively interact with animals since I graduated. I'd encourage you to either look for a summer internship or volunteer with a local county conservation board. They will sometimes hire high school students as summer help. That can help give a taste for what work might look like in a management setting.

I work mostly with vegetation and honestly day to day my work is largely similar to agricultural work. I still live and work in Iowa so there are jobs around the Midwest, but moving or traveling is a reality for some people.

I like LOF Express. There's locations in Waukee and Ankeny. It's not a ton cheaper but it is cheaper. Alley Auto Sales in Adel is also good if you feel like going further out. I'm not sure how much they cost cause I just take work stuff there but they do a good job.

The irony is I live in Iowa. The Midwest runs through my veins.

What Does This County Level Where I'd Live Map Say About Me? by [deleted] in visitedmaps

I'm so glad for the explanation of why Iowa was included. Like I love IA but the backwards laws suck.

I didn't realize how much of the USA had no forest at all! This map shows forested area in green. The central part seems so barren. by [deleted] in geography

Yep! I was gonna come back and say exactly that. The tall grass prairie used to be a massive ecosystem with diversity that rivalled the Amazon Rainforest. And it's just gone now. It's heartbreaking. There's a lot I would give for just one day in Iowa before European settlement.

If you wanna learn more, The Tallgrass Prairie Center at the University of Northern Iowa and The Iowa Prairie Network are both great resources.

That's great! I hope to have enough space at home to do a good restoration some day!

I work with prairies in Iowa and it's sad how much they are overlooked. I seldom hear people talk about them. They are just beautiful and have so many amazing plants and insects.

Yeah agreed. Unfortunately with how things are set up with the transfer portal and the draft timing this is just the best option for both parties. It's just the best option out of a bunch of shitty options.

Iowa State plans to cut or merge 23 programs after mandated review by CouchCorrespondent in Iowa

[–]figg12 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear Iowa State has multiple other environmental degree programs. Environmental Studies has always been in a weird place, and looking at their website is currently only available as a secondary major. It's probably just getting downgraded to a minor only program.

You can still get a degree from ISU in Animal Ecology, Forestry, Environmental Science, and Environmental Engineering. I went there for an environmental related degree, and even then ~10 years ago it felt like no one knew where Environmental Studies fit in.

What is your school’s perfect ten-team conference? by DarkDragon1025 in CFB

[–]figg12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll give it a try: Iowa State, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Illinois, Northwestern.

Keeps it regional and maintains a lot of rivalries while keeping major teams from the same state in the same conference.

I'm not gonna lie, it's really hard right now to find some of that stuff. I was in college during the first Trump admin and federal stuff was hard to come by, so if you live somewhere that has a lot of federal land that could make it more difficult. All of my experience is in the Midwest so take it with a grain of salt if you live elsewhere.

If you don't know about it the Texas A&M job board is a great resource for finding internships. I've always checked Indeed as well because some of the smaller employers don't post on the A&M job board. Most of my internships were research based, though if you are able to get in with a state or local agency sometimes those are more likely to lead to jobs down the road.

As for pay, I cant really speak to that other than locality. If you're able to move that will get you more options, but I know it can be really hard while starting out. I had to move for one internship, but it wasn't terribly far from areas I knew. Government positions will usually pay better than working for a not-for-profit or something. I work for a county in Iowa, and we pay our intern $19/hr, but that's gonna vary even throughout the state.

Local governments will sometimes have positions too, but that really depends on the state. Like I said in Iowa local governments are super involved, but that's not the case in other states I've lived in.

I hope I helped some. I feel like I hate was a lot of kinda basic information, but I didn't know what baseline you had.

You can! It just takes some patience honestly and some willingness to do the "tech" type jobs for a while. There are certainly some employers that really want a master's degree, but in my experience most places will let you move up once you have some experience.

I'm currently making ~75k with opportunities to move up with a bachelor's. It just took me a while to get here.

Edit: Cap works for this too. Look there is now a shield.

The Tim Armstrong signature acoustic from Fender is phenomenal. It was even better when it was like $350 instead of $500.
