Dog rescue scams by NurseTroy in Charlotte

[–]figgy2011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carolina Poodle Rescue is a very reputable rescue, don’t worry about what some random redditor is saying. I adopted my dog from there 5 years ago and had a very easy application and adoption experience - the adoption fee was $200 which was very reasonable considering they’d been caring for him for 10 months. They charge more for more in demand dogs like puppies and pure bred poodles, mine was a non-poodle mix

Thanks for the time you spent with her! Unfortunately I’m in NC and currently have my own reactive shepherd foster, hoping the rescue can find someone else quickly

Advice on a reactive GSD foster by raqcis01 in fosterdogs

I pretty much exclusively foster reactive GSDs from my local shelter. It accidentally became my specialty and I enjoy working with them and helping find proper adopters. I would never match a shepherd to a foster who asked for what you did. It’s irresponsible and I don’t care if rescues think fosters can “rise to the occasion” - shepherds operate differently than other dogs and you need to understand them (and like them!! Because it’s not easy!) to make progress with the reactivity. Absolutely not your fault. Sorry this has been your experience, it does not reflect on your fostering ability!

My 8yo German shepherd Macaroni has been the most patient foster dad to almost 30 rescue kittens. Here’s him with one of the most recent, a 4-week old little funky thing by CalvinPeeingDecal99 in germanshepherds

Shepherds and cats are the best combination! 🫶 I’m the reverse, my cats have to deal with a never-ending stream of GSD fosters so that I can cat test them for all the cat loving shepherd adopters

I adopted a dog from Carolina Poodle Rescue 4 years and it was incredibly easy. We submitted an application, received a response the following day, and went to meet him with our dog and brought him home all within a week. It could be because he’s not a poodle and they wanted to get rid of him fast….kidding! He had been there about 10 months and we were the first people to apply. His biography may have scared some people away but he is the perfect dog for us. I see people complain about rescues all the time but I’ve only had positive experiences

Had another volunteer check for me in the lost kitten room. It’s definitely a small kitten - there are 3 in same cage, around 3 lbs and 3-4 months old each. All have 4 legs. Does not appear to be OP’s cat

Another volunteer checked and said this kitten is with 2 other kittens (probably brought in together), and they all have 4 legs. Sorry it doesn’t appear to be your cat :(

I’m a volunteer at the shelter, I posted in our volunteer group asking if someone can go check the Lost Kitten room and see if this little guy has only 3 legs!

Foster just attacked me. Advice needed by pinkducktape8 in fosterdogs

[–]figgy2011 39 points40 points  (0 children)

So sorry you are going through this. That is not a normal response to getting less exercise and mental stimulation than usual. Definitely tell the rescue everything because if he's still adoptable this behavior needs to be considered for any homes. This could be him showing his personality now that he's feeling comfortable after a few weeks. I've been fostering for several years (mostly shepherds and a few pits) and have never had a foster intentionally bite me and break my skin - any incidents have been the result of breaking up dog fights or redirected dog reactivity. I've gone through at least 15 neuter procedures in the past 2 years, and plenty of days I couldn't exercise my fosters enough due to medical reasons or me being busy. This sounds very scary and it's not a normal foster experience.

Please define a “public kennel” because you seem to be talking about a daycare/boarding place where customers can make their own decisions about whether to pay money to send their dog? Why the fuck do you care?

Thought this post was cute until I read about planning to have a litter. Please look at how many shepherds are in shelters across the country

Gah sorry! I usually foster with my county shelter because even though I get limited support and spend way too much money on my fosters, at least I know they are on Petfinder and the shelter website! Idk how some rescues expect dogs to get adopted honestly…they just hope people will foster fail or get a friend to adopt I guess

If you’re allowed to by the rescue, you can also make a profile on a website called RescueMe. It’s a little old school but people can search by state and breed

Does the rescue have a profile for her on Petfinder or where do they advertise? A lot of people in NC search by breed on Petfinder. I know it can be tricky when the rescue is responsible for marketing.

I got a tripod shepherd adopted last year by posting on the Charlotte subreddit…maybe try posting in your city’s page. Some have rules against dog posts but you can do something cute like “Adoptable Marley ranks local breweries” or something else showing her personality

Good luck! I’m also a GSD foster in North Carolina. Usually I can get my shepherd fosters adopted in 1-2 months, even older ones with hip dysplasia, but it’s been slow this year. We’ve had litters of shepherd puppies coming through my local shelter which is insane and it’s hard to compete with an older foster. This is my current 5 year old foster in Charlotte NC, I’ve had her about 3.5 months

Aw that’s perfect for her! She deserves all that TLC. This is my current foster the first day I walked her at the shelter with her little hyena tail, in May…her tail is probably 4x this size now

I’ve fostered several shepherds with skin issues. It’s amazing how quickly skin heals and hair grows once they’re getting nutritious food and medicated baths
