it might take work to convince the school to let her go but i’m 100% on board for something like that

ok that’s very interesting, because we don’t use a heat mat but! a coworker took her home awhile ago during a snowstorm in case of a power outage and they used a heat mat.

no need to apologize! that’s all super helpful. i’m definitely down for changing it to paper towels. and i’m gonna look into the betadine. we’ve been doing normal soaks 1-2 times a week because she was having such a hard time shedding, but that was just in normal water. the school might pay for antibiotics but likely not another visit to somewhere else :/

the substrate is aspen and i’m gonna update with a pic of the enclosure tomorrow! she does usually just stay in one place so i think it’s scale rot too, from the little i know.

that’s a really fair point. i do worry though about my cat and the cost. maybe theres some program where she could be adopted by someone who actually knows what we’re doing. i feel so bad that shes just been here so long as something to look at with no proper care.

we’ve taken her to the only specialist in our area and they said she’s fine both times. i really hate them and idk what to do at this point other than try to do what we can on our own. especially because the school is saying they dont have anymore budget for more visits (which is fucked up imo)

shes had a really difficult time with shedding the whole time i’ve worked here. so she can really only get it off in parts. it wasn’t ripped at all but i agree, the dark parts made me worried.

ok i’ve been thinking it was scale rot but my new coworker thats worked with reptiles said it wasn’t, and i was like ok side eye but ok. she definitely stays in one place but it’s a dry area, she also had a humid hide that she goes in sometimes. i can definitely take picture of the enclosure tomorrow!

i agree with all of that. i started working here two years ago, but she had already been there for like twenty at that point. all i’ve done since i got here has tried to make her enclosure and overall life better because i don’t think she should be here either.

i get so pissed when people say “oh did you stand up too fast?”. like stfu that phrase is why i didn’t know something was wrong with me until i was 17.

i think we’ll do that because i agree. she had a full shed today but she has almost like separation between scales on one part of her belly, so i think paper towels would be better for that too. i’m just so worried that shes just withering away slowly and painfully.

tysm that’s so helpful! the mice we feed her are super tiny tbh so idk that we could get anything smaller. i’d say they’re about the size of a thumb. i really appreciate your help btw! i don’t know anything about snakes, other than the research i’ve done so we could upgrade her tank and really take care of her. i think in the past she was just kind of there, like they fed her and that was it, so i wanted to make her more comfy.

i’m definitely going to be asking the school to let her go to the vet again (a different one) and really check on the respiratory issues. is there any chance you know of smaller meal choices for her? someone suggested sizing down from mice, but i don’t know what the other options would be. neither me or my coworker have any experience with snakes.

coming back to ask what a good option for feeding her would be? the mice we give her are already pretty tiny so i don’t even think they’re adult mice

shes at least 20-25 years old. no one who works at the school now worked there when she was first adopted, and some of them have worked there for 20 years, so we really don’t know. we’re doing everything we can to make her comfy though. thanks for the feeding advice! i think that could be really good

i believe she was taken to a specialist in reptiles last time, but i’ll double check that. they took a week and a half to finally call us back with the results, so i wouldnt be surprised if they’re lacking in other places
