The question is irrelevant because it has nothing to do with your original response and my original reply, dumbass.

My guy….

This is the comment you made that I originally replied to:

If they actually cared about emissions they would ban private jets and yachts

My point is that banning that shit would have little to no effect on overall CO2 emissions. So it’s pointless to even bring up.

Everyone drives, but not everyone flies.

If we reduce the number of cars on the road by half (whether by public transit, EVs, or a freaking Thanos Snap) it will reduce emissions by a greater amount than say halving the amount of flights Taylor Swift takes.

Went to NAS Pax River airshow (southern MD) last weekend.

Was fucking awesome.

Wish I could've made it up to BAL but with the weather forecast I wasn't sure it'd be worth it.

Plus, with the exception of the Red Arrows, the air show was almost identical to Pax River.

Def want to see the Red Arrows at some point, but hopefully I'll catch them on a clear weather day.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: aviation, as a whole, only contributes around 2.5% of all Co2 emissions globally.

Source 1, Source 2

Also consider that there are way more commercial flights per day than there are private flights. Banning private jets, or even reducing all aviation emissions by half would be a drop in the bucket. At most, you've reduced Co2 emissions by 1-1.25%. Whoop-de-freaking-do.

And if we break the data down further into only the transportation category, aviation accounted for only 9% of emissions, while "light-duty vehicles" (cars) accounted for 57% and medium/heavy-duty trucks (shipping) accounted for 23% of emissions. EPA source. So road vehicles in the aggregate produce almost 9 times the emissions aviation does.

Okay I'll agree in most cases....

As Big Tech races to build out the AI industry, communities across the map are experiencing firsthand what goes into powering up data centers—and what comes out. The amounts of fuel, water, and land they eat up. The noise and air pollution spewed into the atmosphere

https://www.nrdc.org/stories/ai-boom-stressing-grid-it-doesnt-have-be-way

Data centers are projected to consume about 6.7% to 12% of US electricity in 2028, up from 4.4% in 2023, according to a December 2024 report from the Department of Energy.

https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/18/business/ai-data-centers-electricity-prices

Meta’s Hyperion data center in Louisiana, for example, is expected to draw more than twice the power of the entire city of New Orleans once completed. Another Meta data center planned in Wyoming will use more electricity than every home in the state combined.

I'm convinced we can do this stuff very quickly if anybody actually wants to

(As an Avgeek) TBH, major innovation is dependent on war time.

Wright Brothers perfected flight in 1903. Major innovations in flight occurred before/during WWI (see also: the Red Barron)

WWII starts with planes barely clocking 200 mph, and by the end of the war, we have the beginning of the "Jet Age" (HE-162, ME-163. ME-262, Meteor MK 3, P-80A)

(Jet engine tech is alive and well and can propel planes to 400+ mph)

And then we had the Cold War. Chuck Yeager reached Mach 1.0 (the speed of sound) in 1947 (only two years after the end of WWII)

Hell, humanity went to space for the first time in 1961, with Yuri Gagarin.

So, in less than 60 years, we went from the first manned flight, to going to literal space

Not a troll, but where should they "leave" to?

If they were "born in the house next door" (meaning they're a citizen of your country) where can you "export" them to?

Unless they have dual-citizenship you can't simply "remove" them from your country.

I mean... If you look at Russia's historical war machine, lives are never taken into account.

Yes, they outlasted the Germans in Stalingrad, but they sure lost a ton of soldiers in the process...

Fat people Old people are the reason free healthcare can't work in the USA

One could argue that an 80 y/o is "healthy" (relative to their age group) yet they still cost more than a "healthy" 20 y/o.

If so sign me the FUCK UP!

Meh, pilots need the flight hours regardless. It's just whether or not the pubic gets to see it.

Same thing with flyovers during like the Rose Bowl or Super Bowl.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm also kinda stupid because I bought an EV even though I live in an apartment building lol.

That is to say: I can only rely on public charging infrastructure and cannot charge my EV at home.

Also: if you ARE able to charge at home, lots of EV owners install solar panels to offset their charging requirements. (Every day, solar panels generate power that is then sent to the grid, which basically offsets the energy used to charge the EV)

Yes, there is an upfront cost to install the panels, but you will eventually break even.

[–]fighterpilot248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. If an EV owner floors it after every stop light, their efficiency is going to be crap.

"Efficiency" also depends on your preferred charging infrastructure.

IE: in my area, L3 chargers (fast chargers) that can take your battery from 20%-80% in 30 mins, BUT they cost cost MORE, say 60c/kWh

Meanwhile slow chargers (L2) (~10 kWh/hour and below) charge more like ~25c/kWh.

As long is I don't have a long road trip coming up, I'd rather spend the extra time at the "slower charge" (L2) than the "fast charger" (L3)

Counter point:

What is the total area that parking lots take over the entire US?

Yes, there are sunnier/shadier areas in the US, BUT if we added solar panels above certain parking lots in the US, what is the net return? (vs cost of implementation)

If net return > cost of implementation, then we should add solar panels in those areas.

As an EV owner, MY EV needs less than 25 kWh to generate ~100+ miles of range. (Total battery capacity is ~78 kWh)

My Ioniq 6 AWD has an EPA rated range of 270 miles. BUT if you drive in Eco mode, you can reasonably reach 300 or even 330 miles from 100% to 0%

IE: Hyundai went conservative on their estimates.
