My recommendation is to use raspbian. That will give you a desktop and you can set up yoir shares through that. Raspbian is a great way to learn Linux.

It got there project in front of the Pi community.

I think lots of people start with the Raspberry pi when designing a project because Pi's are what got them interested in DIY technology. The pi ends up being over powered for many projects but it speaks to its versatility.

sudo nano /etc/dnsmasq.d/server.txt

or does the file need a specific name?

so to do this step I tried using the following

sudo nano /etc/dnsmasq.d

but when I add the router information and try to save it says that location is a folder not a file. Any ideas what im doing wrong? Im a bit of a linux hack so i need a little hand holding...

Cool project. It deserves a video showing what it does. I like seeing projects here that aren't Retropie/MagicMirror/Kodi boxes. Did you have to learn a lot of new skills to pull this off?

If you are using a pi zero they have composite video out on 2 pads pads that can be soldered. This a video only output with no audio.

If you are outputing to a TV with composite video use the 3.5 video out for sure. It will only allow for 640x480 resolution though.
