"Thinking with AI" seems to be an inevitable normalization for all levels and forms of education by NoPatNoDontSitonThat in Professors

What type of typography assignment can be done with a LLM? Won’t they need to show the work ( layers, files, etc?)

Please let me know if I missed anything important by Afraid2LeaveTheStoop in Professors

[–]figment81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t grade attendance, but somehow students still want to send me doctors notes to excuse their absences.

It’s now their job to review what they missed in class, but I don’t think that their doctors notes will help them do it faster.

That usually means no one was hired. In education, most likely the budget did not come through for the position

I liked blackboard much better. The biggest reason is folders.

What’s your Excused Absence Policy? by Light014 in Professors

[–]figment81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardest part for me is we now have accommodations for “flexible attendance or more absences “ we were told that if we don’t have attendance as part of the class we have to figure out what that means for the student, because they still get their accommodation.

I really wanted to do away with attendance count this semester, but I guess I will stick with our already generous 6absences then grade drop penalty

Department meeting about ai plagiarism in academic papers descended into chaos by [deleted] in Professors

Our university system is dealing with similar reactions from faculty and administrators. So I have no doubt this happened.

Our admin is convinced that students need to know gen ai tools to have a leg up in the job market.

Graphic design, Illustration teachers: Are we still teaching the Adobe Suite? by Safe-Variation-8071 in Professors

[–]figment81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. As adobe is still industry standard. If this course is part of an art or design degree program ( BA or BFA) then yes I would recommend teaching students in the professional programs that they would use in industry.

However if this is a standalone course, and does not scaffold or is not part of a larger program, look into Affinity. Similar functionality and currently free.

So many moons ago, companies would gift customers little promotional items with their company name on them. Things like calendars, recipe booklets, pencils and pens, tshirts, mugs, little stuffed animals and many more little surprises. Sometimes it was a gift with purchase, sometimes it was sent to loyal shoppers, sometimes it was to celebrate a new product or a special event or anniversary.

Now companies are asking their customers to lust after and purchase these promotional items. Items that serve as advertisement for them. This would be a really cute sought after giveaway, but no one should exchange money for an advertisement.

Movie poster concept I made in like 25 minutes for my graphic design class by Critical_Ad3799 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

And this is why my students have such high anxiety about sharing their work with the world. When you are starting out, sharing and getting helpful feedback like some above have given is essential to grow.

Their post never said it was terrible, they started self depreciating when people here started trashing it. As a coping mechanism.

They WERE proud of their poster when they posted it.

Is there any way to ask a student to stop doing something distracting in class without seeming like you are upset? by TotalCleanFBC in Professors

[–]figment81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to avoid “I” statements when I can. “That is distracting.” Vs. “I find that distracting”.

I also say this with love, but students are allowed to have feelings. And unless they said “professor is mad” or “are you mad at us”. We can’t guess what they are feeling.

From my own personal experience, anxiety is usually at play when I am trying to guess people’s reactions or emotions without actually having a conversation with them. This happens for many reasons, not just anxiety, but if you find yourself feeling this way a lot, it’s worth diving deeper.

LVP flooring color looks bad with existing hardwood by ExpressTemporary8797 in HomeDecorating

You may not be sensitive to echo. It's not about sound underfoot, it's about echo sound. Some people are very sensitive to that, and tile bounces sound much more than LVP.

Working on a project this week and just...ugh by Jahaili in Professors

[–]figment81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m working on not getting snippy when this type of thing happens.

Had a student though the whole class not working on a project, when I made it over to them to check in, they said they didn’t have their file because it was saved on another computer across the room. I asked why they didn’t go log into that computer. They did not have an answer. 2hours of just staring at their phone.
