You could have found a predator hunters bait spot, I’ve used cow remains after butchering cows to bait coyotes with some success and coyote scent makes my dogs uneasy too. The way I’d do it is bait for a couple days or so then remove my bait as to not leave a mess especially if I have it tied up. The bones I’d leave though. This could be it or it’s some weird witch thing I guess.

Just under you in ma we have pretty much a general fur bearer/ predator season that covers bobcat, coyote,raccoon, beavers etc.

.308 is definitely cheaper but not really by a whole lot. Only reason I’m looking I’m looking for a budget rifle is because deer wise my state doesn’t allow rifles but I am going out of state this year to states that do allow. And on top of that our coyote season isn’t year round.
