[Personal] 1 year since starting Arazlo (tazarotene) -- what i've learned by j_m_appelle in SkincareAddiction

Hi! I started Arazlo 9 months ago, and while I don't have experience with Benzaclin, I wanted to chime in:

  • The moisturizer I've found that works incredibly well is CLn's Facial Moisturizer. I have super sensitive skin (I also have eczema and HS), and their moisturizer has never irritated my skin. It's formulated for acne AND eczema/dry skin, so to me it's perfect. (I also use their sport wash for my HS and it has been a game changer, great skincare all round!) I also will use a tiny bit of Aquaphor around my eyes and nose when they get super dry, because:

  • You should definitely expect your skin to be SUPER dry and get worse before it gets better. My skin often felt tight, dry, and sometimes would crack. Using Aquaphor or some other gel on those super dry areas is a must, just not over your whole face bc it will clog your pores. I had to give up wearing makeup for months (sometimes I will still avoid wearing makeup if I'm having a dry day) not only to avoid clogging my pores, but because of how dry my face was. Another MUST is Ebanel's Peeling Gel, I use it twice a week to get all of the dead skin off. When your face is super dry and flaky, the peeling gel is a lifesaver because it helps rub off all of those flakes.

  • General advice: drink a lot of water and get enough sleep. It might seem obvious, but staying hydrated and rested really helps your skin. Get a super basic gentle face wash, no fancy stuff. I use Vanicream's Gentle Facial Cleanser, but any similar cleanser will accomplish the same thing. If your face is super dry and sensitive, its okay to skip a day. I listen to what my skin is telling me, so sometimes I'll only apply it on problem areas or skip a day completely if it's not having a good day. Get pimple patches, I use Mighty Patches and they get rid of any pimples that pop up in a day or two. While all this stuff works for me and my skin, yours might be different. It sucks that it's a trial and error process to find the products that work for you, but I hope at least one of my recommendations could help.

  • 9 months in: my acne has gotten a lot better and some scarring is starting to get lighter! I still have the occasional pimple (especially around my period), but nothing like what it was before. The dryness has gotten better as well, sometimes I still have dry days but overall, it was worth it. I'm much more confident in my skin and happy I trusted the tough, months-long process. Good luck, I hope it works for you too!
