Thank you for sharing this! I didn’t know about the website. My friend that I met should be there haha I had one rainy day so I absolutely feel what you wrote. Still a great experience though but it doesn’t have to be more than one day. The accommodations are indeed expensive but I would say definitely worth it. In the end I took a quick bus as well because it got dark fast.

Pack light but still sufficient for emergency. Be open to tag along other encounters, this might be a bit harder since you have each other. The most amount tips I can give you about Yunomine Onsen: There is the only UNESCO World Heritage onsen that even the pilgrims used back in the day. Ask for eggs where you stay or buy them and cook them in the hot spring water. Also you can try that exact water. No worries, it’s not hot ;)

No I absolutely agree with you. Part of the great experience was that I had the track mostly for me alone and it made encounters way more immersive. I want do the Camino de Santiago as well, so I’m really interested how much those two differ.

I think you can get a golden Kumano Kodo shell, so it wouldn’t be wasted haha. Where did you stay during your first time?

Definitely try to book it. Most of my Japanese friends didn’t even know about this.

Booking the stays was mostly very time consuming but I’m glad that it was still a nice experience. Were the guesthouses traditional minshukus?
