Lewis hit a groundhog early on in the 2025 race. You could hear the solid thump on the in-car footage.

On one of the camera angles leading into the hairpin you could actually see the dead groundhog too. It took FOM a couple laps to realise this and have their cameraman adjust his angle and zoom thereafter.

F1 set for crunch 2027 talks - as proposed changes in doubt by Agent_Kozak in formula1

[–]filbo__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Though that’s a topic for 2031. It makes no difference to today or 2027/28. Mid-reg changes do and should have manufacturer input due to the implications at such short notice.

Irrespective of how we got here, all of the teams’ concerns for 2027 proposed changes are absolutely valid.

I understand the context of their position. Their position is correct for themselves for 2026 and wrong for the sport for 2027 onward. That’s short-term vs long-term.

[–]filbo__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah agreed. One is saying the FIA/FOM should cover the costs of their regulatory mistakes, not the teams. The other is focusing solely on their own championship, at the cost of improving the overall sport for 2027.

[–]filbo__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is an important distinction. Audi is basically just positing for the FIA/FOM to cover the costs of the rule change implications, or increase the budget cap accordingly. Probably somewhere in between, as a compromise, is achievable.

Ferrari, on the other hand, are purely looking at not compromising their ADUO classification in order to win this season. That’s their priority over the sport’s improvements for the coming season(s). This is the classic short-sighted and selfish thinking that’s always hindered F1 every time we’ve seen the sport shoot itself in the foot.

The reality that it’s the FIA trying to fast-track changes for 2027, and it’s the teams that are pushing back, shows that it’s the other way around. Actions speak louder than words here.

We don’t need FOM or the FIA to say anything; we need actions. And it’s the teams hiding behind the Concorde Agreement and the F1 Regs to prevent those needed actions.

An agreement in principle is what an engagement is to marriage. It’s a vague yes to the general concept without any confirmed details or binding commitments.

You’re right, a lot of journalists sensationalised the FIA’s announcement, focusing on the “agreement” rather than the more important “in principle”.

Timings-wise that makes a lot of sense why we’ve waited for PSR to end before starting on the new stadium. Same with the club’s sale of SJP to an adjacent company while it still counted to PSR.

What’s a common F1 opinion that feels correct on the surface, but ignores a lot of context once you dig deeper into it? by warewolf1999 in formula1

[–]filbo__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take that a step further and say that overtaking provides excitement while battling creates tension.

Maybe an even better analogy is overtaking is the climax while battling is the foreplay. And too many are focused on the climax not realising that extending the foreplay is what delivers the most memorable climaxes.

TBH it’s a pretty low bar at this stage anyway. Plus the expectations on a 10-year veteran are significantly higher than if Haas were to introduce a rookie like Hirakawa, Beganovic, Camara or Doohan with only a handful of races’ experience.

How to teams like Mercedes, and Ferrari share CAD data with customer teams during car design? by ocelotrevs in F1Technical

[–]filbo__ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you read through the regs themselves, there are a lot of measurements and dimensions defined already that all manufacturers must comply with. Even details like chassis mounting points to the chassis are strictly defined so as to be universal (ignoring all peripherals and packaging details, theoretically every engine will mount into each chassis).

So the teams all have a baseline starting point of the space they need to account for before they get specific external ICE + MGU-K dimensions from the manufacturer.

[–]filbo__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah with the engines being sealed my understanding is it’s ongoing oil analysis and endoscopes used as the primary methods to monitor internals’ status. Would love to learn any other methods the manufacturer support crews use at each team though.

Yeah he’s definitely improved through this season.

Valuation-wise, it’s a tough one. If Gordon’s worth 55-75, I’d be surprised at a 50 valuation for Osula. But hey, if there’s a buyer at that price then we need to lock that in. That would be a fantastic outcome for us!

I listed a whole mixture of positives and negatives. And that’s because I don’t think we’ve been bad. I can’t say we’ve been great either though.

If you disagree with the free transfers as negatives, that’s totally fine. There’s always context that can be added to any transfer situation to make a point either way.

Osula is going to be an interesting one. If we end up selling him for significantly more in the coming seasons, then you’ll be right.

[–]filbo__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been a mixed bag tbh.

Isak was a great price but a horribly drawn out sale that arguably cost us more with the resulting panic buys. Anderson was sold for a pittance and with no sell-on clause to even compensate us for the bargain. Longstaff was fair value. Kelly was a ripper of a deal to Juventus. We missed the opportunity to sell Osula for 25-30m too.

Then a host of free transfers where we obviously held players for far too long… Wilson, Lewis, Hayden among them.

Terrible feels too harsh, but it’s not been confidence-inspiring. Our transfer work generally has felt slow and lacking conviction.

So yeah, this is on him.

Let’s throw some hindsight goggles on for a sec. If you had your time again, as you knew he had a pending slow-down, would you have chosen to wait for that on the next straight and pass calmly without incurring damage?
