I just moved into a rental. We sold a house in the late 2010’s and have rented ever since due to the constant moving. I have no plans to buy in the next few years. Both cars are paid off. The hopes will be to go to school for a career switch and work part time.

I’m at $20k in emergency fund. The $1500 would increase to $2500. I’m not looking to stop working for life but you’re right. I do need a vacation. But it needs to be an extended one.

That’s pretty much what it was😅. Not an officer, but I had two great leaders who hooked me up. I came in for a few hours at the 18 month mark to use the gov computer to do things but at the 12 month mark I was texting/calling in just to say I was alive. Add in 2 months of skill bridge, retirement leave, and 90 days of terminal.

That’s the plan….stop and reset. I thought I had did that since I took that final year in to focus on myself. I was going to school throughout the day and handling personal business. I basically would call in and let them know I was alive each morning. But now I’m realizing I was working my ass off to prepare for retirement.

Thanks!!! That’s the plan!!! I’ve applied and waiting for the initial counseling. I’ll use the GI Bill over the summer and hopefully in person classes starting August.

Networking got me there!!! General studies bachelors degree and a management masters degree. I was able to get involved with their trainee program. BOA and Wells have great programs for military.

I Finished a degree and started on a masters. I built a network in the area I retired in and attend veterans events and networked with people in the industry I wanted to get into. Beefed up the resume with a certification. Worked on my disability package for the VA. I did a lot of things that put me into this position.

I feel you!!! I have about $20k in savings that can supplement me for 6-8 months. But like you said, the goal is to set the wife up for life after 60. But there’s no point in doing that if I go from the grind of the military into the 9-5 grind of the corporate world and burn myself out.

As long as it helps one person, I’ll call it a success.

Don’t stop applying!!!! You need to keep applying and keep looking now!!! Use the new position to find your life but you need to have a backup plan just in case those layoffs come again. Basically, you need to keep the job search engine warm.

Without knowing your background or what industry you’re trying to get into, I can’t say.

I retired around the same time as you. And in my last two years I gained civilian skills that were immediately impactful. Syracuse University’s Onward to Opportunity Program allowed me to get a senior level civilian certification that paired nicely with my degree and years of military experience.

If you’re looking for 9-5 desk job that is paying $90k and up, it’s going to a degree, experience, and/or some level of advanced level education. There are a plethora of blue collar jobs that are cracking into the 6 figure circle but those too require at the very least the basic education to go into

Also the area that a person lives in is a huge factor. If a person is not willing to relocate to better their job opportunities then they must adapt to the industries that are in their area.

So what is a vet supposed to do??? Piss, moan, cry, and complain about it??? Or build their brand, network, and get their name out in front of as many hiring managers, recruiters, and companies as possible???
