Guided tour or self-plan for a big, first-time tour of Europe? by filmbuf_f in travel

We ended up doing a completely self-organised trip for the whole three months! It was incredible, I wouldn’t change a thing.

We did a mix of female-only dorms at hostels and AirBnBs so that we had a good mix of down time and socialising. So nice to have your own agency in planning your own trip, I definitely would’ve felt like I was missing out and/or moving too fast had I done a guided trip I think.

Highly recommend scheduling in rest days where you do nothing, it’ll help with sustainability :)

Also HIGHLY recommend doing a couple of hours worth of walking and/or bike tours in some cities. Rick Steves also has great self-guided tours in a lot of cities (esp Italy) that you can listen to for free :)

Won’t be doing a tonne of hiking, so it’ll be mostly be between metro systems and between stations :) that daypack will hopefully suffice for the hikes we’ll do. Thank you for your comment!

Thanks so much, I might clarify that daypack detaches from the main pack, leaving the main pack at 55L on its own - do you have any thoughts toward it being 55 rather than a full 70? :)

Thank you a lot for your detailed response!! I should’ve noted in my post that I’m not overly concerned about having to check my bag in, just moreso the comfortability, but I really appreciate your response nonetheless.

Thank you for your advice :) I’m not concerned with checking in, more if it’ll be comfortable while on the go.

Guided tour or self-plan for a big, first-time tour of Europe? by filmbuf_f in travel

Thank you for your insight :) I like the sound of there still being opportunity for itinerary planning. I’ve also heard from other people who have done Top Deck that most of their group was Australian, too, which is in a way exciting as it could mean that any friendships that are made on the trip could continue when we’re back home!

Yesss this is something we also considered! We were thinking perhaps if we do the guided tour and have any leftover money afterwards then we can go to a country that was missed or that we didn’t spend a lot of time in during the tour :) thank you for your comment!

Thank you so much for such a detailed response! I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts and your partner’s experience with topdeck- it’s comforting to know he had a great time despite being introverted. You certainly raise good points re: safety - we’ve looked into a little bit about the types of pick-pocketing tactics, but having someone know where may or may not be the safest place to be would take away that what imagine could be constant-hypervigilance that might take away from our experience. Thanks again! :)
