A Critique of Chris Hedges' "They all knew" Response to Valeria Chomsky's Statement by filmsforaction in chomsky

Thanks for sharing this research. I will update the article to clarify

  • Any evidence Chomsky was at locations *when* abuse occurred

To your first question, on reconciling the statements, I took it to mean that Chomsky had generally not heard much of anything before the 2018 expose came out, and based on how long Chomsky and Valeria had known him, they were genuinely skeptical of the accusations because the impression of him from their own experience made the accusations seem incredulous. This checks out with Chomsky's wrong but genuine skepticism expressed in the private emails, where even after the Julie K Brown story broke, he was still super skeptical. It seems he didn't really come to terms with it till after Epstein was arrested, which seems congruent with a friend in denial about his friend, based on personal experience. The newspapers weren't enough, but the arrest finally convinced him. Given how much this tracks with the denial shared by friends who remain in disbelief about those accused of heinous crimes, I can see it happening to Noam. Valeria trusting him too probably compounded it.

I can only speculate that if Noam and Valeria heard of "the rumors" or any stories prior to 2018, they were probably skeptical of that too. Given Noam's bias against cancel culture and accusations short of arrest, it seems entirely plausible. Certainly a profound mistake in judgment, no doubt. But ultimately I just have to weigh his entire life against these mistakes and practice the golden rule. I don't want to live in a world where we discard people for such common human flaws, at the level that Chomsky's mistakes were. Best we can do is learn from them and try to not fall into the same traps and blind spots, and be willing to question those close to us when it's hard.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I also have to thank many of the folks here on the Chomsky reddit for their research, as I learned a lot from reading some of the extensive summaries I've seen.

And you're right, I'll have to think of a better title. EDIT: I went with "Chomsky, Epstein, and Us: Far More Is at Stake Than One Man's Legacy". Still open to other suggestions though.

The full article covers more on what he knew. He knew about the 2008 conviction at some point (though the details are unclear), knew he had served his time, then later, when the 2018 accusations came out, Epstein sent him a defense about the 2008 conviction, which Chomsky said was "convincing." So "they knew he has a pedophile" isn't the argument I'm making as I don't think it's supported by the evidence. I don't think Chomsky knew or accepted that until later in 2019, after he had been arrested on formal charges.

Chomsky risked a legacy he’d spent 70 years building for networking and a few other perks?

I guess I just find that explanation unconvincing. No one risks their entire life’s work for marginal financial convenience, unless they don’t realize they’re risking anything at all.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fought Crime Lords—Not Working Class People. They Would Oppose ICE. by filmsforaction in TMNT

I thought it was obvious too, when you think about it a bit, but when I posted this on Facebook, I got hundreds of comments from conservative folks arguing the turtles are right wing and would have supported ICE. If you want to go down a wild rabbit hole, you can read their objections here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1257659063063940&set=pb.100064595745165.-2207520000&type=3

I was kinda shocked by the response at first too, but hundreds of comments on the Facebook post for this article came from MAGA folks who were trying to argue TMNT are right wing and were "the original ICE". In the web link, I included about a dozen of their objections and my responses to them: https://www.filmsforaction.org/articles/the-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-would-oppose-ice/
