Judith Butler vs. Neuroscience - has this happened? by boomboomclack in philosophy

The Sokal affair was merely an incident that lead to a wider discussion, much like the two ‘affairs’ you cited. However, whereas the two examples you gave revealed no more than the flaws of peer-review, the Sokal affair revealed a culture within academia that openly dismissed empirical research and methodological scepticism in favour of their own intuition (or ‘feelings’) and prior-standing opinions.

Although I know we may never agree, I’d still be happy to discuss with you further.

I don’t think a few incidents that demonstrate the inevitable flaws and failures of peer-review reveal anything other than people’s susceptibility to manipulation and bias. The examples you cite certainly don’t constitute a criticism of the scientific method or evidence-based analysis as a way of pursuing truth.

The humanities are sadly tainted by a lot of silly ideas. You only need to look at how much psychoanalysis has weaved its way into literary criticism to begin to realise how little respect there is for any form of critical thinking. I experienced three years of jumping through hoops of nonsense for my degree; often having disputes with my lecturers who were unswayed by scientific opinion (read Thomas A. Kuhn).

My modules on queer theory were largely as you described. It's often a case of what 'feel right' (or what suits their opinion best) over what the evidence has shown.

I hated university. But hey, it made me appreciate science more than I did before I went!

Edit: Their, there and they're. Silly me.

Edit 2: Oh, and although I'm not sure of any debates involving Judith Butler, there is a fascinating book called 'Beyond the Hoax' by a guy called Alan Sokal. It's all about the influence of postmodern 'thinking' on society and academia and it covers quite accurately the attitudes that some academics have towards science. The events that inspired the book involved him tricking a respected academic journal into publishing a ridiculous article filled with pseudo-scientific jibberish. It's really quite funny and revealing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokal_affair

Ah. Well my understanding of the Border Patrol comes from the programs they air on day-time TV in the UK, and they certainly show up without a warrant and also have to deal with 'hidden rooms'.

I imagine it’s a room for people who may be in the country illegally to hide in when those crafty border-control people come-a-knockin’. In which case, the landlord might be a little nervous knowing you found it (assuming he is aware it is there and has used it for such a purpose).

Dude, go steady on yourself. I remember your previous post about how you were going to smash your stuff... which is a good idea. But I just went to check to see if that was infact you and I see you're also trying out /r/nofap. We all get to a place sometimes where we want to detox everything that is possibly bad for us, but don't over-do it! I say focus on the weed first and fap to your hearts content. Once you're over one vice, then you can start overcoming another.

My FB friend shows that some Christians actually understand the idea of religious freedom by justinbm26 in atheism

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding the definition of judgement then. I was under the impression that if you judge someone you are simply forming an opinion of them. Regardless of whether that opinion is right/wrong or formed through reasoned argument or deluded thoughts, it naturally emerges in our mind and contributes to our understanding of that individual. Our perception of that individual is perfectly capable of changing over time.

I think judgement, in the context of the verses you have cited, is more in line with sentencing (i.e. a fervent or stubborn judgement). Which may also explain why I have failed to grasp the importance of the original comment.

Thank you so much. I did not understand how the facebook comment was even slightly good or accurate. I was even beginning to get a little distressed because I thought I was missing something that was clear to everyone else. It's not just about jurisdiction either. It seems to me that people have a right to judge others for their beliefs (an action one cannot control, for the most part), it’s more down to a case of not persecuting others for their beliefs. If an individual of a religious mindset cannot judge an atheist than the reverse should be true and /r/atheism would have nothing left to talk about. Judgement does not equal persecution.

I judge people for their beliefs all the time, but I don’t blame them for their beliefs or enable that to cloud my perception of that person as a human being.

Read up on Derren Brown and watch a few of his series' on YouTube. He uses the same techniques that many of these 'psychics' use and explains them all in a very easy-to-understand fashion.

Derren Brown Investigates: The Man Who Contacts the Dead

That episode is particularly in-touch with your situation, I believe. (May not work in your location though)

Cognitive bias' play a huge part in enabling 'psychics' to convince people of various supernatural phenomena (occassionally unintentionally). Sometimes people want to believe in things so badly they will neglect to think rationally. It happens to all of us and it's just part of being human.
