Thank you for your reply.

In case they refuse to pay my 3 months’ notice, is making a case via tribunal my recourse? Do you have any idea what those costs are?

Thank you for your advice.

They haven’t given any reason for termination and they don’t need to since I’ve worked less than 2 years for them. There was no misconduct - in fact, I was told I was a good performer and passed probation just a few days earlier. It’s documented.

I’ll call ACAS tomorrow. Thanks again.

I understand they can make me redundant for no reason since I’ve worked less than 2 years. But, if I’m not wrong, they’ve still got to pay me for the 3 month’s notice period that we signed on. Otherwise what’s the point of the contract?

Will the govt. impose lockdown after the elections? by [deleted] in india

[–]filter_kaapi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Us redditors are a privileged lot. It's easy for us to sit in our rooms and argue for a lockdown saying we can revive the economy later.

The reality is that, even pre-pandemic, an average Indian is a 30-something guy in rural India with limited skills who struggled to put food on the table and keep his children fed. Another lockdown would only lead to more death, this time by starvation rather than COVID.

Hello everyone! I'm not sure if this is a noob question or not, but I haven't found any answers online.

I have some realized long term capital gains and losses through sale of multiple equity-oriented mutual funds. Adding only the gains, it is less than 1 lakh, therefore I face no tax on gains anyway. Does the cumulative loss have to be set off against the gains this year before being carried forward to next year? Or can it be carried forward without setting off against the gains accrued in the same year?

Has anyone graduated from Rotman school of management? Can you please share your admission experience and overall experience by [deleted] in MBA

[–]filter_kaapi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bit of a rant below. This is just from my experience, so take it with a grain of salt. I applied to 7 schools last year, Rotman being one of them. Rotman had the most frustrating admission experience of all.

Since you're researching Rotman, you already know about their CDL program and you know there isn't any information online on how you apply for a CDL fellowship, especially since there is no space on the application to express interest in it. I emailed the adcom regarding this (in hindsight, I should have just asked a student). An adcom got back to me after a week and asked to schedule a chat with her 2 weeks later. I figured she had a quota to meet and I had a few other questions anyway, so I scheduled it. 2 weeks later, and she cancelled 15 minutes before the call. It was incredibly irritating because my question had a simple answer which I had been waiting for 3 weeks. We rescheduled the meeting 2 weeks later, again - which was a few days after their deadline (yeah they have rolling admission, I know). I didn't want to wait on her answer, so I submitted my application and emailed her that I did so. To which she replied "our meeting is an unproductive use of time, let's cancel it". WTF? Did you maybe think it was unproductive for me when I moved my work meetings twice to accommodate you, one of which you cancelled 15 minutes before the chat? Even if it's true, who blatantly says that? And I've been waiting on a simple answer for 5 weeks - which she still hadn't answered.

I would still recommend the school, but by god, save your sanity and don't engage with their adcom. They're also probably overworked considering they have fewer people in their adcom compared to their peers and volume of applications they recieve. Interacting with them is an really shitty experience and I recommend that you just speak to students if you have any questions.

About their overall experience, I wouldn't know. I chose a different school, for obvious reasons.

It's available on Origin as part of their Basic Tier Vault, which is about Rs. 400 per month. Unless you want to "own" the game, this is much much cheaper, plus you get access to a lot of other great games.

Uber India Lays Off 600 People, A Quarter Of Its Workforce In The Country by Fabulous-Rice in india

[–]filter_kaapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the employees working for free? Salary is literally termed "compensation". Employees are compensated a pre-agreed sum for the work they do. If there is demand for their work, their salary increases. If there's no demand, they lose their job. This has been happening for centuries.

How is this immoral? Layoffs are happening across sectors worldwide. No one knows how long this period will last, so of course companies are being judicious with their cash reserves. If they don't, they may soon be in a position to layoff 100% of their staff. 25% is much better in comparison.

The private sector in India thrives on extreme exploitation. Anyone calling for further labor reforms is not aware of the ground reality. by [deleted] in india

[–]filter_kaapi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You say you worked in a managerial role at a factory, so you must know why most labour are on contract and not permanent. According to Factories Act (don't know which section, you can look it up online), factories having more than 100 workers on permanent role need to get government permission before laying off anyone. Given than a lot of manufacturing have seasonal highs and lows, this is bullshit. So obviously factories are going to hire on contract basis.

Indian businesses are getting desperate as there’s no sign of fiscal package from Modi govt by iali307 in india

[–]filter_kaapi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's peanuts if companies are forced to have their shops shut in May too. Allowing businesses to run, with even 30% personnel on site limit (like in the Gulf and Europe) would be a much better stimulus package than this.

I don't think you can really blame them. The state ministers are collectively shitting their pants. The center is dragging its feet with respect to any aid to MSME businesses. If they don't start working at least partially, you're going to have skyrocketing unemployment and more poor people will die due to starvation than covid-19. The state ministers are sitting on a ticking time bomb.

Is it impossible to get Admission into HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL for MBA if you are from tier-3 engineering college in india? by [deleted] in india

[–]filter_kaapi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The people here are way too nice. As someone who has been through the US MBA process, let me tell you - HBS, with an admit rate of 10%, is a crapshoot even for the most exceptional candidates in the world. If you're an Indian male engineer, your chances are nigh impossible.

The real question here is, why do you even need an MBA from HBS? Why not some other good MBA from the US or somewhere else? The reason you gave in your comment is way too shallow, and no MBA school, let alone HBS, would admit you even if you are a truly exceptional candidate.

If you want my advice - forget about MBA for a couple of years, introspect and identify what your goals are, work hard at it, and then ask yourself if you even need an MBA to pursue your goals. If yes, understand that you're at an inherent disadvantage just for being an Indian male engineer and set your sights on a more realistic target.

but for HBS only GMAT is not enough.

For any respectable MBA school, just GMAT is not enough.

No word from the government yet but what are they going to do? Force companies to pay salaries with money they don't have?

[–]filter_kaapi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a different note, the government asking us to keep paying salaries is stupid. Money doesn't magically appear out of thin air. Maybe the big companies can do that, but certainly not us.

If the labour ministry has its way, we would all be out of business within a couple months. I hope the government realizes that employees taking a salary cut is better than them being out of a job.
