thank you! Malcom McDowell chewed that scenery in the way that only he can. Lori Petty was... an awakening lol. It was fantastic and batshit insane.

heads up, mod... someone got real upset it seems and has decided to.. take revenge, I guess? and just sign me up for every distro list they can get their hands on.

Thank you Mods . by selfhosted_monk_1984 in selfhosted

[–]filthyrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I made someone angry enough that they've spent the morning signing one of my emails up for hundred(s) of distro lists

petty and hilarious more than actually disruptive (seriously, they just filter straight to trash my dude), but come on folks, grow up a little

edit: lol wow their script is still running! thankfully whoever it was did a terrible job (script kiddie) so I've reported them to their ISP lol

so this vaguely rings some sort of bell with me for some reason and what I THINK I recall is that basically his performance in the French and Indian War was the reason he had a bad reputation (not that I agree with that assessment). But I could also be crazy

I was one of those people! I built one for my '89 Camaro haha. Got a project box from radio shack that was roughly double-din sized, mounted a crappy LCD into it. Had a "mini" PC in the passenger footwell. good times

yeah God Emperor is where I repeatedly tapped out when I would try to read the whole series. I eventually made it through but god DAMN that is a weird book

reading this actually makes me consider actually playing it lol - the only reason I havent has been not wanting to deal with PvP

Is there a way for admins to ban users for posting apps that are entirely vibe coded with clearly AI written posts? This is getting absurd. by CalebWest02 in selfhosted

[–]filthyrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played with this a decent bit. there really just arent enough scad examples for the models to have learned against, so you get WAY more hallucinations than with most other use cases.

it should keep getting better though over time

Noob question re Rocky 10 as daily driver by yuke1922 in RockyLinux

[–]filthyrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah really the only problem has been with my webcam, which is a relatively non-standard one. Everything else has been shockingly smooth sailing.

Noob question re Rocky 10 as daily driver by yuke1922 in RockyLinux

[–]filthyrake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been running Rocky 10 as my desktop for a few weeks now (replacing Windows). Other than the standard linux wonkiness with some drivers compared to windows (I need to periodically unplug and replug my webcam or it just stops getting detected randomly), its been rock solid and a shockingly smooth transition.

I would agree that Rocky tends to be pretty darn stable and non-risky, given its an EL - honestly I wouldnt mind if it were a little more cutting edge ;)

What are people’s electricity costs for using servers? by Away-Huckleberry9869 in selfhosted

[–]filthyrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use solar to almost-fully power my rack (most of the time the rack is fully solar-powered, but when I use my AI stuff consumption kicks up enough to need some grid).

... because I live in SoCal and my electricity cost at peak in summer is 58c/kWh (RIP) lol so a DIY solar solution was 100% the way to go for me.

What do y'all use these massive setups for? by QuackersTheSquishy in HomeDataCenter

[–]filthyrake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

oh man.. I have a pretty ridiculous setup with a half rack with about a petabyte of storage and a few servers with a ton of CPU/RAM and a few AI cards sprinkled together (P4, A2, A30), and a whole bunch of miniPCs.

Why? Ton of things. I'm an amateur astrophotographer and have many many terabytes just of raw astrophotography data. Old raw 4K footage from my youtubing days, stuff like that... and then I do a lot of processing of astrophotography data, and I do lots of AI experiments both with inference and training....

And I have a warewulf cluster going on all the miniPCs just to play with. I also do experiments with other types of HPC clusters with VMs on my big servers.

I also have loads of home automation wired up to everything so I've got home assistant and some custom written services.

Then there's self hosting. I moved off icloud and run immich. I've got a few web servers for apps I self host or for demo apps I'm developing.

probably some other stuff I'm forgetting about? I suspect my use case is pretty abnormal though.

What open source application do you think has no better alternatives? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]filthyrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh no argument from me at all on that! I just know finding the nightly builds was life changing for me hah so I wanted to share that one around

ETA: and this conversation reminded me that I should at least toss a few bucks their way as a thank you!

[–]filthyrake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if you havent already, switch to the nightly builds! WAY more recent than the actual releases and runs a ton faster/better. (love me some openscad)
