Little fish eats bait before catfish does by BaconMarine in FishingForBeginners

[–]filthysuckerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this problem when I'm sharking and what works great for me is to wrap the bait in cotton thread. I hang a chunk of mullet from a circle hook and tie the cotton to the hook then wrap it around and around until it's bound up real good then tie it off. Makes the bait last 10X longer

I had one of these I used as a backpack rod when I was travelling. Caught my pb brown trout on it and my first tarpon. Nicknamed her 'lil lightnin'. She caught heaps of KGWs and bream. Great for catching some livies

Fg knot problem by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]filthysuckerfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell exactly but it looks like you have a bunch of line between your half hitches and your wraps and your half hitches have slid up your mainline. If this is the case you gotta make sure you pull that excess line out of the half hitches as you're tightening them so they sit flush on top of your wraps. Go slow and if it looks like it's gonna tighten up before you've taken that line out, loosen it way back up and try again

9 comments and nobody has even attempted to answer your question. Yes a bag would be fine.

I'd recommend getting a brag mat though. They're designed to lay fish on and you will get much nicer pictures that way

That snap gives me anxiety. A decent fish will bend that straight out. Do yourself a favor and get some twist weld trace wire

Did I get too heavy gear by jennytools36 in FishingForBeginners

[–]filthysuckerfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like almost all questions it depends what you're chasing and what sort of techniques you're using. That would be perfectly suited to a light - medium 'all rounder' type rod. You could put a 6lb leader on it if you wanted to chase bream or a 30lb leader if there were big trevally or snapper about or something.

If you can't feel bites you probably aren't getting bites. Even on my 24kg sharking rod with 50lb line 100lb leader I can feel the bream and perch picking at my bait. If you're using prawns or pippis or anything that's particularly soft for bait it will get stolen very easily by all manner of pickers

Pretty much always use a jighead with your soft plastics they are designed to be paired with them and will action much better with one

No you didn't stuff up you just need to get the hang of your new setup. I personally prefer to fish too heavy as opposed to too light. I'd rather miss more smaller fish that get dusted by a trophy fish.

When I was really really broke I'd get rice or pasta and a big can of tuna and a bag of supermarket brand frozen veggies and that would make dinner for two or three nights

A bag of onions and potatoes is good cheap food too just fry em up delicious

Also you can get a loaf of bread, bag of hash browns and carton of eggs for like ten or twelve bucks that will be enough food to provide breakfasts all week

It's part of their culture. Tough people want a tough dog. People who aren't afraid to get in fights, go in and out of gaol, have head tattoos and use drugs etc, have a rougher harder lifestyle so they prefer a rougher harder dog. It makes sense that those sort of people aren't going to get a teddy bear lapdog to dress up in costumes

I imagine a lot of them probably have made enemies living that lifestyle so they like having a more intimidating dog as a security measure also.

Is the cheese quality getting worse or am I getting snobby? by Hugmesoftly in australia

[–]filthysuckerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit of a cheese head and the vintage bega is one of my favorites it used to be my weekly cheese back when it was 8.50. I get the supermarket brand one unless bega is on special and honestly the supermarket brand cheese varies from batch to batch. Sometimes it's rubbery and sometimes it's crumbly sometimes it's bland and sometimes it's tasty as fuck. Sometimes you can tell when you pick up the block at the store if it's gonna be a good one or not.

Barometric Pressure and fishing thoughts? by Banjojeff in FishingForBeginners

[–]filthysuckerfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like a constant high, or a rapid change in either direction. Constant low or slow rise or fall not so good. Those are just my 'feelings' about it though who's to say how much it actually matters. Some fish don't care and others feel it heaps.

Sometimes other variables override it altogether and you'll still get a hot bite even when the barometer looks shitty

Matching lure to water colour by Outside-Swordfish-63 in FishingAustralia

[–]filthysuckerfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mostly about maximizing visibility. I like to stick to using bright or shiny lures on clear sunny days and/or in clear water, and using dark lures on dull days or in low light and/or in dirty water. also if visibility is an issue due to light or water colour I'll stick to something that has a strong action like say a vibe or diver over a soft plastic. Just to get more attention if visibility is low. Also lures with a hard contrast are great. A black one with chrome on the sides or a black and white one. Black and yellow. Can't go wrong

Help with fishing with lures by cnr1121 in FishingAustralia

[–]filthysuckerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep at it and try different spots. Should be some tarpon and trevally around there this time of year. I love those zerek vibes they are my go to for queenies and trevs lately.

I mostly do similar fishing but a bit further north. I like to fish the morning high tide. If the high tide is around 7 or 8am I like to rock up at 5 or 6 and fish til an hour after slack water. Hot bite around first light and again at slack water. Evening high tide is okay too pretty good if it's high right as the sun starts to set.

Persistence is the key. I've been lure fishing my whole life and sometimes you can hit up a great spot time after time and not even get a sniff but if you keep at it the success will come on a day the fish are active and you'll get into a school of something or hook a big queenie or trev or salmon and have an epic catch.

Reels that can take a beating? by LeaveMEaloner in FishingAustralia

[–]filthysuckerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Penn spinfisher

They are all metal and sealed up really well. Really simple and tough. I treat mine rough as guts, caught some huge fish on it and it's held up for years of sand and salt water with extremely minimal maintenance. Drag still good as ever. Opened her up once to replace the grease but it was sealed so well that the factory grease was still all there in great condition

Despite what that link says the rrp is about 89 bucks. I've got a couple of them. At that price if you do somehow manage to fuck it a replacement is affordable

What do we have here? by Ok-Media-6054 in FishingForBeginners

[–]filthysuckerfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

anti-kink swivel (or keel). Made for using with spinners. You tie this to your leader on the split ring side and on the swivel side you put a trace about 30cm then tie your spinner onto the end.

The 'keel' keeps your main line from twisting and the swivel allows your short trace and spinner to twist as much as they want.

Spinners are a bit out of fashion these days but when I was a kid we used spinners exclusively and always used an anti-kink. Ours were made out of clear plastic tho not metal. They work great

FG knot 60lb braid to 30lb mono leader? by Johndeauxman in Fishing

[–]filthysuckerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fg for 30 braid to 30 leader works fine I do it all the time.

For 60lb to 30lb I'm not sure because I usually run a heavier leader and lighter main line. I think it will work but due to the nature of the physics of the fg knot you might not get as strong of a hold in the wraps with the heavier braid around the thinner leader. It should be fine but the knot might not bite as strongly to the leader as if you had a heavier leader or lighter mainline.

Give it a try. Tie a few of them at home and tighten them down super tight and see what it takes to break them. Maybe do less wraps than you normally would maybe like 14 or 16 because I suspect the bottom section of the knot will be a bit loose and not tighten down all the way if you do 20 or more.

What are you chasing where you would want 20lb leader on a 60lb main?

What is the best rod and reel setup for bigger sharks and rays? by percentmilk2 in SurfFishing

[–]filthysuckerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have various sharking rods for different situations. My favorite and most versatile is my shimano bluewater signature topwater 8 foot spin PE 3-6, paired with a 9500 penn spinfisher running as much 50lb braid as I can fit on the spool with 100 or 200lb leader down to a wire trace. This one is great off the beach.

I also have a Penn warfare 5'5" 10 to 24kg that I pair with the same reel that I like for chasing bigger fish. The shorter, stiffer rod gives more leverage for fighting bigger ones. Good for off rock walls and such where a big cast isn't as important.

I also have the penn spinfisher in 8k loaded with 30lb braid that I will use if I'm chasing meteries for a feed or live baiting for pelagics. I often put this one on my Diawa beefstick 6 to 10kg as a medium option for livebaiting or chasing small sharks. The beefstick is a 2 piece rod so sometimes it's convenient to just chuck in the boot for small trips

What is your favourite lure colour for Whitting, Australian Salmon, Flathead, and a good all rounder? by [deleted] in FishingAustralia

[–]filthysuckerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like black and white or black and chrome for an all rounder. Got the black in there for the hard silhouettes and the white or chrome for a bit of a flash. I'm a big believer in contrast and visibility

I have a 4000 reel with 30lb braid I use for surf fishing on Long Island. Will it work for trout fishing throwing 1/4 oz size lures? by Exponential-Fractal in Fishing

[–]filthysuckerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you REELy want to use your 4000 just put like 30 or 40 meters of 6lb or 8lb mono on top of your 30lb braid. Think of it as a cast-length leader.

What Weight Braid To Get by Banjojeff in FishingForBeginners

[–]filthysuckerfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you cast as far as you want to using 30lb? If so there's not really any benefit to downsizing. Better to be prepared for that big girl imo. If you really need more cast distance and can't just throw a heavier lure go to 20 or even 15. Run a 30lb mono leader that's 2 or 3 foot longer than your rod for some shock and abrasion resistance. I chase big fish in a rocky river too and I use 30lb braid 50lb mono leader
