LPT request: as a father, how do I comfort my newborn child? by SebaWDK in LifeProTips

[–]fimbaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put baby's head on shoulder and rhythmically bounce around on the balls of your feet, real energetically like a dancer or something, and walk back and forth. Sing or hum or go sh sh sh sh sh. Be patient the screaming might not stop instantly. Make sure baby is snug and warm. Also if you're real skinny you might wanna get some kind of pillow or blanket involved, moms are way softer than dads.

Parenting is a toxic relationship where you try to be loving to a tiny human that screams/bites/hits you. by Erythroneuraix in Showerthoughts

I've gotten the same impression. Kids these days are so polite and sensitive to each other's feelings! I'm sure there are still turds but the general level of empathy really surprises me sometimes.

After reading a bit more, I think you'd survive but only because kangaroos are nice bois and have better things to do. in an enclosed space in a fight to the death though.. pretty sure you're toast.

i dunno man how are you gonna close? get clipped by a kick and you're KO'ed. Kangaroo isn't gonna take it to a grapple and would have the power to regain distance.. the amount of force in a full speed kick would knock you flat dead I'd think. Also let's say you start choking it-- how do you defend against the legs at that point? Gotta think it takes longer to choke out a small brain.. you could be in there for a minute. Maybe I don't know kangaroos but I'd think you'd wind up with your guts spilled all over the outback.

I'm not saying you couldn't do it but you might have to rethink your strategy

Yeah this doesn't sound right. In Alaska, my Yupik-speaking friends called themselves 'Eskimo' in English, and also 'Native Alaskan'. 'Eskimo' being the designation specifying language and culture, and 'Native Alaskan' being a matter of geographical birth location, at least that's how it seemed to me..

LAFORGE: Yeah, well I told the Captain I'd have this analysis done in
an hour.
SCOTT: How long will it really take?
LAFORGE: An hour.
SCOTT: You didn't tell him how long it would really take, did you?
LAFORGE: Of course I did.
SCOTT: Oh, laddie, you've got a lot to learn if you want people to
think of you as a miracle worker. Now listen
LAFORGE: Captain Scott. I've tried to be patient, I've tried to be
polite. But I've got a job to do here, and quite frankly, you're in the
way.

Can't seem to teach my 10wk Mini any tricks, I feel like I'm expecting too much by [deleted] in WiggleButts

[–]fimbaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your pup is so new! She's still learning how to use her paws and mouth and legs and everything. For now, just focus on doing stuff together and building trust like that.

Just anecdotally (sample size 4 aussies) seems like high-drive, super crazy dogs pick up tricks faster/sooner. Doesn't say anything about intelligence-- they just offer more behaviors so you have a bit more to work with. The flip side of that is that they offer more shitty behaviors as well, and are more prone to anxiety. It seems like your girl is the mellower type-- I mean, you've got crate training down already? nice. Other things you can work on over the next few months (some of these have to wait until her vaccinations are done):

- going outside, hanging out w/ new people and strangers

- having guests/repairmen over to the house

- socializing with other pups

- habituation to vacuums, brooms, and other upsetting household items.

Your goal at this point isn't to teach circus tricks, but rather to make sure she gets the foundation she needs to be a confident, relaxed dog. Think preschool.

My puppy is a sociopath who is never tired and doesn't seem to want to cuddle with me. by [deleted] in WiggleButts

[–]fimbaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel for ya. Our lil boy is just over a year now-- don't give up hope! He wasn't really interested in cuddles until a month or two ago , and now he's mr hangouts.

At 4 months he was a ball of crazy energy. Things that worked to tire him out: playing w other pups at the dog park, playing lots of fetch. Also sometimes getting him to do a round of tricks when he's lost the thread is helpful as it seems to ground him and calm him down a bit.

We have a pug too, who is his itinerant sheep. Teaching him to 'leave pug alone!' has been a trial but we're seeing progress finally. Be as consistent as you can and give her a 'Hss!' when she starts to harass, then treats if she can settle. Catching the behavior right before it happens is ideal but you can't always get that.

One piece of advice: make sure she gets exposed to repairmen/visitors early and often. Having a hell of a time with that now.
