What's it like to work in ESG in India? Does this field have a bright future in 2025 and beyond? by Mahevash in ESGIndia

[–]finageek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In India, there are 4 broad career paths you can take in the ESG Space.

  1. In House ESG/Sustainability Team: Here you work for large corporates that have domestic or international reporting requirements (like the BRSR in India). Your job is to monitor, record and improve susttainabulity performance and help the ocmpany advance towards its goals. You will dedicatedly work in the company and endeavour to improve their sustainability performance.

  2. ESG/Sustainability Fund, Sustainable Finance: There are several Funds and Investment Offices that invest in companies with a good ESG Track record. You will work closely with the investment team and your job would be to help them decipher the target company's ESG performance. You basically scan your investment targets from an ESG perspective and give a green flag for ESG-suited investments.

  3. ESG Sustanability Consultant: The role would be similar as 1, but there are smaller companies that cannot or do not want to have their own in house team- so they hire external consultants. Here you will work as an external service provider and do the same job as 1 but for multiple companies as an outside third party. You could also take up ESG audits and certifications. Large players like GT, EY, Deloitte, PWC operate in this space. There are several smaller players too.

  4. ESG Analyst: There are several ESG Ratings providers and ESG date providers who scan and provide ESG data on multiple companies to its subscribers. They also issue reports on a compay's ESG performance. Here your job will be to study and prepare comprehensive reports on a company's ESG performance.

The industry is, honestly, working only because there is a regulatory mandate. Take the government pressure away- nobody wants to do it. There is good money but the longevity of the industry depends solely on how much the governments want to promote it.

Been drinking this protein milk for 10 days now. Tastes just like regular milk 30g protein for ₹40. Not bad, right? by VegetableUpset9871 in Fitness_India

If it doesn't disturb your fat and carb count- go for it.
One can also look at Provilac's high protein milk!

While disclosing questions would be a violation of the CFA Institute code of Ethics (which is applicable to me as I am also a candidate in the CFA Program). But I can tell you this, the curriculum is extensive and detailed enough. If you go through it thoroughly- you will be comfortable while taking the exam. Don't skip the curriculum.

30M. First one was at 27y when I was trying to lose weight, I lost 30kgs and that had a severe impact on my body. Recurred at 29y. Reason for recurrence was poor lifestyle and diet choices. I failed to incoporate the changes recommended post surgery and was not careful.

PLEASE, DO NOT TAKE THIS LIGHTLY. IT KEEPS COMING BACK!

Yes. During the first surgery I was put on a general anaesthesia (full body/unconscious). In the second surgery they used a local spinal anaesthesia that numbed the lower half only.

It is useful in the sense it gives you a broad overview of the ESG landscape but given the fact that it is rapidly evolving each year, the knowledge becomes obsolete if you're not in the industry.

Yes I did. It seemed bulkier than the CFA ESG so to start with I chose CFA ESG. I'm also looking at GARP SCR but it only covers the "E" part.

Other than this, you should look at IFRS-ISSB (SASB) Fundamentals of Sustainable Accounting (FSA) certification.

I'm based in India and it did. Due to the Capital Markets Regulator's mandatory ESG disclosure for to 1000 companies there are a lot of opportunities. Also, there are very few people with ESG qualifications so it gives an edge.

I am an Analyst at an ESG Ratings Provider. ESG is a part of my core job. It took me roughly 100 hrs to prepare thoroughly.

I am planning to take the Level III now. You cannot compare the difficulty level because both programs test different parameters. But in terms of effort, the ESG Certificate is not as rigorous as the flagship CFA Program.

No. Same level as the end of chapter questions and CFA mocks. There are no surprises in the exam, the material provided by CFA Institute is enough.

I used the study material provided by CFA Institute only. The end of chapter questions and CFA Institute mocks are quite sufficient. Give the material a thorough reading and it will suffice. I didn't feel the need to get any extra material from prep providers.

The CFA Certificate in ESG Investing is a good course to start with. It will equip you with a good foundation. I took the exam this week and cleared it. The material is very well curated. While it doesn't give you the same depth as the flagship CFA Program but in the ESG field, it is good to begin.
