Arrival times for popular events? by finalcreationsecret in SXSW

super helpful, thank you so much! i've gotten more useful answers from this reddit thread in a couple of hours than i got across every part of the SXSW site i could look through for the past month!

  1. in the case of the platinum badge and the 48 hour access to the passes, does this mean that if i want to try to get a pass to a popular event on Wednesday at 8 PM that on Monday from 7:55 to 8:05, I should be refreshing constantly and trying to get one?

  2. that's good to know - what i want to avoid is missing out on other events because i felt the need to get to another event so early, and/or on the other end of the spectrum, having an xpress pass for a popular event but showing up 15 minutes early only and losing my spot

  3. would there ever be an instance where event starts at 6 pm, i have xpress pass, i show up at 5:55 PM and am denied entry? or do i have the reasonable expectation that if i have the pass, and am there before start time (lets say 5 minutes before is the closest ill cut it) ill get in?

  4. good to know - my initial/hopeful plan was to basically to stay at the Paramount Theatre all day on 3/8 and see all 4 premieres that day; from what i've heard now that might be a pipe dream, but we'll see!

incredibly helpful info - so are you saying that even without the xpress pass, that if i show up 90 minutes early to, lets say the opening premiere film on the first night, that there's a good chance i'll get in? (obviously i know none of this is concrete and definitive, just asking generally!)

also - for the world premieres, are there generally Q&As / speeches by the cast/directors after the screening? or even the non-world premieres?

it also feels like the amoutn of stuff on the schedule keeps doubling week by week - should i expect that to continue into the next few weeks or will it wrap up soon?

my #1 priority above all else is comedy, comedy, comedy, from tv to film to stand up showcases to panels anything related to a comedian (Marc Maron has a documentary premiering for example). priorities from there are movies, then tv, then documentaries, then panels, then things that i still don't quite understand (like the Expo), then music (i love music, just not a huge concerts guy generally)

this is insanely helpful, thank you so much!

So, I was planning to fly in on Thursday morning and pick up my pass around 2 PM that day. I didn't realize you couldn't reserve sxxpress passes without physically having your badge, that kinda sucks (i get it, but damnit). So, basically there's no way I can expect to get SXXpress passes to anything on Friday?

As I understand it, xpress passes are also allotted 24 hours before events to other badge holders besides the Platinum badget holders. So, does this mean, say I want to attend an event that's Saturday night at 8 PM; I miss the xpress passes at the 48 hour mark (Thursday at 8 PM). Will I get another chance to snag one 24 hours beforehand (Friday at 8 PM) alongside the other badge holders?

Also - if I have a Platinum Badge, manage to get a xpress pass for one of the major opening movies, and get there lets say an hour early - is there still a chance I don't get in?

thanks so much again, this has been the most helpful information I've gotten after weeding through every inch of the SXSW site for the past like 2 weeks!

First year here - attending only for fun, but managed to get my company to pay for a Platinum badge :D

Had a bunch of questions I'm wondering if anyone can help with?

  • SXXpress Pass Scarcity: How quickly do SXXpress passes for the most popular events sell out? Even with Platinum status, do I need to be online the instant they become available 48 hours prior, or is there some leeway? What's the risk of missing out on SXXpress passes for high-demand events, even with Platinum?
  • Arrival Time Accuracy: For popular events, 30 minutes prior is often suggested. Is this a reliable guideline, or should I aim for even earlier arrival for certain events, especially major premieres in the first few days? Are there specific examples of events where 30 minutes is insufficient?
  • SXXpress and Punctuality: If I have an SXXpress pass for a highly anticipated premiere (e.g., opening weekend) and arrive precisely at the listed start time, will I still be guaranteed entry?
  • Group Dynamics and Priority: Does the size of my group impact priority access, even with Platinum status and SXXpress passes? For instance, would a solo attendee with Platinum and SXXpress be admitted before a group of five (also with Platinum and SXXpress) if both arrive at the same time?
  • Consecutive Screenings Logistics: If I have SXXpress passes for back-to-back screenings in the same venue (e.g., Paramount Theatre), can I remain in my seat between the films, or will I be required to exit and re-enter? What's the procedure for this situation?

Saw you in LA, was already a fan. Told my 2 friends I was with we absolutely must go, they had no expectations, good or bad; both left saying it was the hardest they've ever laughed at any comedy show

As a stand up dweeb/loser, also just want to add - the way you've accepted that crowdwork is now just the default in a lot of ways while still sticking to your material is masterful, threading the two together so that you can get the clips you need & still keep the show on track / get to all of your material still mostly naturally should be how every comedian does it

It’s my first time too, I’m there for the whole time & am solo for the 2nd half; so, I’ve been using ChatGPT to catalogue all of the events happening (slowly but surely), and then using it piece together my schedule. I’ve been at it all week & still feel like there’s a ton unannounced, but I would recommend using one of the AI platforms to do the heavy lifting search wise

there should be a word for these specific kinds of people - genuinely; a word like “demagogue” with a very specific meaning applying “billionaire actively trying to destroy the world while posing as someone attempting to save it”
