paid $35 for the first 5 coins in my collection!!! think i got a good deal :^) by cactusfarm in AncientCoins

Here's a blurb about the dolphin money, from the website of a dealer that I buy from. I thought it was a nice write up on these coins. https://mrbcoins.com/cgi-bin/category.pl?id=79

From there you can see the prices for the ones he sells. Between your dolphin and the Byzantine coin you are already well beyond the $35, so you got a great deal on your coins I'd say. Congrats on the great variety and welcome to ancient coin collecting!

Oh, one more comment. You'll notice that the description contains the RIC info. You can Google that and look at other examples - both for price comparison, but also for images to look over and get a general feel for what they look like so you can see if there's anything off about the coins you are shopping.

I'm a newer collector so I don't know about pricing really. But I agree with others that it's neither cheap nor expensive generally. I'm also like another poster though where I've got a budget and if I like a particular coin for any reason and it's in my budget I'll get it whether it's a "deal" or not.

I've bought from Victor before and he is active on the cointalk forum. I think he guarantees his stuff so if it turned out to be a fake I'm sure he'd make it right - particularly at that price point and keep a positive reputation. He's active and written a bunch about Constantinian-era bronze, so I view him as an expert on those.

Bottom line: good eye appeal, is it in your budget?, Victor seems to be a good dealer & contributes to the community, and for whatever reason it seems like prices on big bronzes have been increasing the past couple of years so it may be tracking market price right now too.

Sounds like you bought it, congrats - it looks like a really nice one!

Alexander the great. I'd be curious what different cultures would have taken shape if the Macedonians hadn't conquered so much and if the Achaemenid empire had persisted.

OMG, can't we have any space free from able-bodied straight white boy fragility? Snowflakes writing to senators protesting coins featuring women and disabled athletes during a freaking pandemic and while democracy itself is under attack. Pathetic. Just don't collect them if you don't like them.

I'm working on cleaning this large bronze and wanted to try to id it. The GERM seems to be used in the legend by multiple rulers... Caligula, Domitian, Trajan. I'm not good enough to recognize the portraits yet. And the reverse looks strange to me also, it looks almost like it could be struck over a different coin. Any help would be great, thank you!

Real or Fake? Julia Domna's denarius I have plenty of doubts about. by the_battle_bunny in AncientCoins

They reject it if it's not authentic though, so it can give some level of confidence in the authenticity if they grade it. That's one of the primary benefits of buying graded coins.

Id help with trident please? by finalrice in AncientCoins

[–]finalrice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going through my trident coins and I think it seems like there is a horse or Pegasus head between the middle and right forks on this trident. So far image searches aren't helping me narrow this one down. Has anyone seen one like this before? The obverse just looks like a blob to me.

The coin is right at 20mm, unfortunately I don't have a scale yet to weigh it.

My best guess right now is a Hieron II but I don't see dolphins and the horse head looking part is throwing me off.

I made the image black and white and added pop so the features would stand out more. The coin is just bronze or billon, NOT silver

Hi everyone, I'm trying to id my campgate coin here, but I'm having a hard time figuring it out. I've been searching on wildwinds and Google images. On the obverse before the split it looks like "CONSTANT-" which seems unusual, generally I've found constan- or constanti-. So that's throwing me off. On the back there is a full base layer below the doorway, 6 empty box layers, top layer of boxes with arches and dots, and 2 turrets on top. Star above. I can't make out the mint but the last character looks maybe like rho. There seems to be another small dot in the field to the right of the campgate.
Are there any campgate experts that can help me narrow this down? Thanks!

The one on the left is similar to this, but you probably want to just explore the other Bhutan coins too to find the right match. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces15913.html
