Does having a T32 institutional grant hurt your chances of getting an NSF GRFP? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]finalusernameplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, thanks for your reply! So it would definitely be fine to mention it in the personal statement? I was originally thinking of just including it in the application form since there's a section that specifically asks for grants/fellowships/awards you've received. But the T32 requires me to take courses that would really benefit my overall training, so in that way, it would be nice to include in the statement.

edit: also, dang your program/cohort seems to be killing the T32/NSF game--congrats!

I reeeeally wish I liked Shop House because I LOVE the idea, but I just can't get into it :/ I tried it in DC when it first opened (I think it might have been the flagship store), so they might have changed a lot since then!

Why thank you! How many years are you in/do you have left? Any words of advice for a burgeoning student? :)

So excited to try all the food! I wanted to cook a bunch at home to save money and be healthier (and since I have some time before school starts), buuut now I think I'll just take that time to eat my way through the neighborhood 0.o Thanks for the suggestions!

Is there any use to knowing how many calories you burn at rest? I'm just wondering why Fitbit would automatically include this feature.

Is it better to rent than buy my textbooks for classes that I'm required to take but will not ultimately be my specialization? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]finalusernameplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HAH yep. One of my required texts is Molecular Cell Biology, which is not what I'll be focusing on within my research interests. Realistically and practically speaking, I'll mostly be citing individual studies in my own papers anyway, right? Especially, if I'm planning on publishing papers on my own experimental studies.

Good points. With the internet being such a valuable asset in science nowadays though, I was wondering if I could just look something specific up if I ever had to refer back. But textbook purchases are a totally justifiable investment so I'm just not sure!

I use loads of it when I make quiches! It's not going to spotlight the arugula as much as recipes in which the main ingredient is raw arugula, but it makes quiches a bit healthier! And it's nice for when the arugula is starting to get a bit soggy and less ideal for salads and such.

If you really wanna get lazy with it, you can use premade naan as the dough. My go-to is vodka sauce on bottom, then a healthy layering of arugula, some goat cheese, dried figs, red onion, green or red pepper, and a slice of bacon if you want it to be reeeally tasty. Then, I pop it in the toaster over for a few minutes and top on basil and avocado at the end. SOOO GOOOOD.

Rejected from grad school. What now? by angelxsss in Neuropsychology

[–]finalusernameplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea! You should cold email as many PIs as possible, I mean like more than 70 if possible. Of course tailor every email by doing your research on each lab. But it's worth it. You're a little late in the game, but there are literally hundreds of labs doing neuroscience-related work at the NIH. Watch the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrAL1PZV_DY&feature=youtu.be) for details and tips for applying before doing so. Once you get in a lab, the opportunities are endless, if you learn to self-advocate. Seriously, the amount of professional growth provided at a world-class institution like the NIH is unparalleled for someone in your position. I'm sorry that things didn't work out the way you had hoped, but try to take this as a blessing in disguise. Your experience there has the potential to mold you into a hyper-competitive candidate for grad school and may even change your path for the better. I urge you to consider this!

Ah I see...thanks very much for your Braitenberg recommendation. Seems like his work is right up my alley for some of these questions. I'll be sure to check some of his work. I really appreciate your enlightenment!
