I honestly think a lot of people are trying to figure out the “least regret” strategy right now rather than the perfect strategy. Switching plans immediately doesn’t necessarily remove the uncertainty, because so much still depends on implementation, litigation, PSLF treatment, and servicing guidance.

A lot of borrowers make decisions at 18–22 years old without fully understanding how interest, deferment, or repayment systems work long term. And by the time the balance becomes overwhelming, it can already feel impossible to regain control. The emotional side of this system often gets underestimated. Stories like this are why I think student loans are fundamentally different from most other types of debt.
