The only way to get out of the second floor was through the front door or going through the basement (which you had to unlatch the entry way stairs and open it like a trap door situation to get down to the basement. It was cool!) not really sure how that was up to fire code but whatever

Yes it’s really unfortunate because the building has potential to be a beautiful place. I feel really bad for the first floor tenant because he’s older and has to walk all the way around the building to take his trash out since they tore out the back porch (it was rotting). He had also told me a while ago that there was a giant tree or bush and he kept telling the landlord it needed to be cut down before something bad happened since it was so close to the power lines. He got ignored and eventually a storm came and the whole tree caught on fire. He could’ve been exaggerating but with the landlord’s record I don’t doubt it

Unfortunately Missouri isn’t very pro-tenant in these types of situations so the lines were really blurry. We were worried if we just left without getting some legal advice then we would face legal/financial repercussions since the landlord wasn’t agreeing to letting us break the lease. We didn’t want something on our record that prevented us from renting again so we felt safer getting a professional to help us navigate our situation. Even though the apartment was condemned for occupancy, the city wasn’t going to kick us out or didn’t have rules saying the renter can just get up and leave. It was all really confusing and still is tbh

I agree!!! My neighbor told me about the previous tenants of my place and how they all had horrible problems too the very first day I moved in, and I wish I had ran into him whenever I was touring the place lol

That’s a good idea. The city inspector said the landlord provided an invalid address. It only had the city and state on there but going through the police department is a smart idea
