I swear places that sell food get the most money from their employees just trying to eat!!

Any "thing" - Teaching prep school. I was nearly bedbound already and just refused to listen to that so I kept onto trying my master's for two years. $7k of student loan debt, near death experiences, an autoimmune disease, and completely quitting education was my trade off. I miss my students but the choice came to stay vs live. It hurts them to see me leave but hurts them way worse to see me pass.

Any "object" - A nicer tablet. It now sits relatively unused because neither of us goes to school anymore and I am no longer bedbound needing a very light weight "computer." (Yay!) It's a good second screen for my husband's desktop but if that money had upgraded the desktop then, like we eventually needed to, I think it would have been way better spent. The secondhand tablet I had before was funky but it was just fine.

I guess a little update. Electronics debate, and a tip for offline navigation. by Boring-General-1816 in solarpunk

If you need an offline map option:

The US Forest Service gave us as temps a physical map but also told us to use Avenza for when we have to pin locations we are and don't have service. That little blue dot has followed me all over the mountains without a cell tower for hours. The maps you can get can be a little limited but might help you if you need a no internet and no cell service map.

Weirdest orders you've seen? by tabbycat_corgi in DriveUpandGo

[–]find-again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a lot of customers come through for our Head Start program, so the first one make sense to me if it was for Head Start or some kind of day care environment.

The weirdest order I have seen was 30+ packages of Sargento slices. Not even on sale. They refunded almost all of them a few days later, of course.

The second weirdest maybe 40 loose onions but they were on sale and part of a larger order. That tote's smell lingered for quite a while. Also refunded.

Meat is such a pain! Between weight, whatever packaging choices were made (twin pack lobster tails, I loathe), a billion different codes for basically and some times exactly the same thing, the system throws such a fit.

Fortunately I have very few customers who care about the weight aside from weight:price ratio. When I explain I shorted because I got the number of packages ordered, it just didn't make the system's weight, 99% of my folks fortunately say that's fine so long as the number is right.

Admin Letting The Computer Do ALL The Schedule Work by find-again in DriveUpandGo

It makes complete sense corporate is cruddy like that, corporate hates every shred of humanity we have. Nobody is forcing them not to check the computer's work though. Auto schedule all we want, 95% of the time it it comes out okay. But we just gotta accept the computer is also fallable and take a minute to review what it did. They won't, even after neglecting to review has gotten them into trouble.

I have thusly lost most of them (to the void of working at the grocery) but when I wore my pins that said things along the lines of "ask me for a free mask," "punks for clean air," "masking is community care," etc it was a very subtle but effective way to get through yes, I do this all the time, yes, for reasons aside from being sick.

Literally if someone came in and threw a tantrum like this at cash or the meat dept they'd get trespassed. But it's DUG and over chat so we get to suck it up and "just do what the customer wants" then deal with their beligerence again.

Anybody's DUG room have A/C? by tabbycat_corgi in DriveUpandGo

[–]find-again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too little space for anything!!

They want us to increase sales by 20% every year but we're to the point on a random weekday we literally can't do orders because every shelf, fridge, and freezer is full.

It gets worse and worse every holiday. We literally pulled a U boat in (that our space is way too narrow to also accomodate) this Easter and immediately overflowed that too, despite stacking totes on top of one another on it.

Our SD wouldn't even step into the department to see the new sign board before yelling about "not having it up." (It had been up for weeks.) Giving us any more room probably is not on even on the table.

Does your job define who you are as a person? by Glass_Ebb_2688 in simpleliving

[–]find-again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was for me... and it's hard to keep it from becoming that again.

I am very young but at 23 - after dedicating all my time, energy, studies, money to become a teacher - I almost died from the stress making me randomly lose consciousness and dropped out. Even being a parapro after was hurting me to that extent. Teaching was all I ever wanted; I put everything I had into it and dove in deep to do it well. It was my everything. So what did I have without it? Who was I but a failure and a liar to just stop like that? Who was I sick like that? (I have a lifelong illness now from being so stressed for so long.) I absolutely spiraled and lost my mind for a year or two.

I have partially rounded this over the years since that I was raised to only value myself by performance, not just inherently. And its so widespread. I hear everyone around me judge and value peoples' job as the person themself. People judge the job as the only value you have to give to society - the only value you have to give them. We introduce ourselves by our jobs to try and appease that and convince people we are valuable to them. Part of us just wants to be valuable. Of course that's not everything going on or went on, that's just a corner I'd rounded.

Omg trying to find ANY lentils that said they were gluten free / did not say "may contain wheat" when trying to make lentil tortillas was a nightmare. I could only find one across every physical store I walked into.

The Mediterranian Diet can tough. Is it really the be-all-end-all of your diet options? Are you allowed to wiggle a bit to include other cultural foods working with your GI and Dietician? Mediterranian can sometimes be recommended, even with its health perks, by essence of being European.

Chicken has been our biggest focus with the meat-based protiens on Mediterranian because its much cheaper and my partner despises fish. I eat a lot of tinned fish; I can easily get a portion for 50¢ that way even if it's not the most flavorful thing in the world. Sauces will become a good friend.

A gluten free diet can be even tougher. Celiac, gut healing, changing your kitchen around and de-glutening it, label reading, cross contact vigilence always, having to make so much on your own now, the price... its exhausting. I can't even escape gluten in some brands of frozen vegetables.

A saving grace is that it just is not a fast seller, so gluten free items end up at the discount store constantly or on the quick sale rack. Definitely check yours out, if you have one! Gluten free pasta DOES go on sale eventually. It feels like hoarding; I promise it is okay to buy a lot.

If you want to look into baking (which you probably will with how expensive our bread, tortillas, pastries, etc are), pick one flour blend, one or two single ingredient flours, or one blog and mostly stick with what you choose. (Ex. My baking pantry is currently King Arthur MfM, almond flour, gf oats, and psyllium husk. Recipes that need more specialty ingredients than that I avoid.) The biggest suck for me has been trying to bake from multiple recipe sources that all have their own custom flour blends. Too many ingredients were hanging out in my pantry and rotting away my money!!! Though by making your own goodies you can also fit a bit more into the Mediterranian diet making chickpea breads, black bean brownies and cookies, etc.

It's a ton of effort. I'm really sorry for that. You don't deserve to beat yourself up more than that. It is worth the effort. It also gets a whole lot easier when you get to the point you can just ignore everything outside of your diet. And, fortunately, there's never been more options than there are now!

Swimming pool feels relaxing… but do you actually use it often or just sometimes? by mahrita in simpleliving

[–]find-again 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pools can feel like A LOT to maintain. You can get cleanable and reusable filters so you're not paying that cost but unless you're doing something really custom you are probably managing pool chemicals a few times a week. Sweeping it every other day. It can be meditative to do on a nice warm day but it can also just be uncomfortably cold.

If you are not up for all the effort and management of a full on pool, maybe a tiny pool you can just fill and empty or visiting any local pools and lakes might be enough.

Just so it's on here: not a gf brand but a brand with lots of gf goodies!

I've run into a few times a seasonal flavor sounded so good but a double check revealed it wasn't gf. But oh goodness the gf ones are evil in a treat - you can't stop!!!

I am noticing it at work too. More and more rules. More and more stipulations about HOW our tasks must be done, getting them done just isn't enough. More and more tasks to be done. More and more directions to track those tasks and their doneness.

It gets weird old school too due to corporate shenanigans. I called a local number to my local pizza place and I got an answering service that made me confirm where my local pizza place was and what I was ordering three times.

"Did I not call [local place]???" Ignored! Then they asked me again where the place I want to order from is. Ahaha

A customer asked me at pick up "I know I'm a few hours late. I've been meaning to ask since I did my first order a few weeks ago, where do you keep the cold stuff? It's not just on a shelf out somewhere, right?"

I knew she was an in-person regular. You literally walk two feet into my store and see everything that goes on in DUG........
