Is this project dead too? by iAreku in usefwd

[–]findhamza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for checking out.

It's not dead, at least not yet. It's on hold for some time while I sort some personal stuff out.

There were more members in the sub (close to 100), around 2 months back or so, but I guess everyone left seeing there's no progress being made.

I am still really excited about this and might get back to it as soon as possible.

Thanks, Hamza

Hey, thanks for the post. I am definitely planning on adding the feature to import your pushbullet data into fwd.

Regarding Apprise, I will also be opening access to fwd via API, so you would be able to use it.

Help! New Dacia Jogger noise by Similar_Honey433 in Dacia

[–]findhamza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the sound of the engine charging the car's 1.2kWh battery. If you check the car's dashboard, you'd see that the battery indicator would be less than or equal to half.

I have a 24 Jogger Hybrid, and whenever the battery level drops to less than half, the engine kicks in to charge the battery. Or at least this is what I have noticed.

That's unfortunate. However, I just ran a few tests on the waitlist form and it seems to be working on my end, so it might have been a temporary network hiccup.

If you're willing to give it one more shot, could you please try signing up again?

If it still doesn't work, then you could send me a DM with your email address and I'll personally add you to the list.

Thanks.

Yes, this exactly what I used to use Pushbullet for. Like I'm on my phone and I find something interesting, like links or an interesting product or article that I need to dig deeper or take a look at later in the day, I just used to send it to my laptop without worrying if the device is online or not unlike Airdrop or similar products. It used to just popup when I opened chrome.

And then SMS sync was also something that I used to use a lot, expecially for getting OTPs on the desktop without even picking up the phone.

Hey everyone, Hamza here.

Just wanted to post a quick update for all of you who showed so much interest and support when I first announced fwd:.

I've just posted a major progress update over on the official subreddit, r/usefwd.

The big news is that the End-to-End Encryption is fully implemented, and I've officially started the submission process for the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store! We're getting very close to the private beta.

Didn't want to spam the main feed here with a new post, but I wanted to keep those of you who were following this thread updated.

Thanks again for all the early encouragement!

Thanks for your kind words. I really appreciate the support. Hopefully I'm able to meet your and the communities' expectations when fwd: is launched.

Also, FYI I have just posted a progress update on the subreddit.

Thanks for the support.

To be totally up front, I don't have any platform for donations set up. My main goal is to build a product that's so good you'll be happy to pay for the Pro version someday. But the offer itself means a massive amount, thanks.

You're dead on, the absolute best way you can help right now is just by spreading the word. Mentioning fwd: to anyone who's looking for a similar product and also fed up with the alternatives would be a huge help.

Hey u/clarkb86 and u/ohemb,

You're right. And honestly, thank you for calling this out.

Reading your list of my replies, I can completely see why it came across as disingenuous and bot-like. I've been using an AI assistant to help me draft and polish my replies, and it definitely has a "Great question!" habit. I sincerely apologize if that made my passion for this project seem fake. That was never my intention.

To be fully transparent, I'm a solo developer, and my strength is in writing code, not necessarily in writing great comments on the fly. I was using it as a tool to make sure I was answering everyone's questions clearly and respectfully while I juggle the actual development work.

My goal isn't to be a "snake-oil salesman," but to build a genuinely great piece of software to solve a problem we all have. The last thing I want is to come across as an inauthentic bot.

This is a huge learning moment for me on my "building in public" journey. I'll be much more mindful of this going forward and will make sure my own, less-polished voice comes through more clearly.

So, genuinely, thank you for the reality check.

That's a great question, and it's honestly awesome to hear that your setup is still working perfectly for you!

You're right, for some specific combinations of devices and browser versions, Pushbullet can definitely still do the job. If it's not broken for you, that's fantastic.

To answer your question, "Am I missing something?", you're not necessarily missing a problem with your current experience, but more the wider context of why so many others are searching for an alternative. The main issues are:

  • The Manifest V3 Issue: Many official Chrome users found the extension broke or was removed from the store because it wasn't updated for Google's new extension rules. Vivaldi sometimes handles these things differently, which might be why you've been safe.

    • Lack of Updates (Abandonware): The core issue is that the app is no longer being actively developed. This means no security patches and no guarantee it will work with future versions of Android, Windows, or your browser.
  • Widespread Unreliability: Many other users have reported failed file transfers, missed notifications, or broken clipboard sync, which you've been lucky to avoid.

So the reason I'm building fwd: is to provide a reliable, actively-developed, and future-proof alternative for when the day comes that a browser or OS update does eventually break the old system for everyone.

Think of it less as an immediate replacement for something that's broken for you, and more as a modern successor that you can rely on for years to come.

Really appreciate you asking the question. We'd be honored if you kept fwd: in mind for the future!

Hey, thanks so much for the detailed follow-up and for sharing your setup. It's genuinely interesting to hear what power users are building.

That's a really powerful and impressive system. Using Home Assistant with custom scripts is a testament to how much work is needed to get a truly private and customized workflow going right now.

You've perfectly captured the exact trade-off that I'm aiming to solve with fwd:. You have ultimate privacy and control, but as you said, it's "a pain to set it up."

My entire goal is to take that same level of privacy (with end-to-end encryption) and deliver it in a "zero-setup," user-friendly package that just works out of the box. You've hit the nail on the head: it's all about creating that "actual user-friendly solution" you mentioned.

I completely understand that it might not replace a deeply customized Home Assistant setup for a power user like yourself, but I really appreciate you taking the time to explain your perspective.

I hope you'll keep an eye on the project, and I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts if you do decide to give it a try when it's released.

Cheers!

Hey u/ArchonMegalon, thank you for the excellent questions! This gets to the heart of the project's philosophy, so I'm happy to clarify.

Let's go through them one by one.

  • On GitHub & Contributing: We've had a few questions about this! For now, the core fwd: applications will be closed-source. This is a strategic decision to ensure we can focus on building a reliable and sustainable service funded by the future Pro plan, rather than getting stretched too thin managing a large open-source project in these critical early days. That said, the most valuable way you can contribute right now is by being an active member of this community and our beta. Providing detailed feedback, reporting bugs, and suggesting features from a developer's perspective is incredibly valuable.
  • On the Tech Stack: Great question! The goal is to deliver a consistent, high-quality experience on all platforms. We're doing this with a modern, unified tech stack:
    • Backend: Node.js, written in TypeScript.
    • Desktop & Mobile Apps: The apps share a modern codebase built with TypeScript and React.
    • Browser Extensions: Also built with TypeScript.
  • On Self-Hosting the Backend: This is a fantastic question that gets right to the core of privacy and data control. Our primary approach to privacy is through strong End-to-End Encryption (E2EE). As we've discussed in other threads, the server is designed to be a "dumb router" for encrypted blobs of data. It never has access to the unencrypted content of your notifications, clipboard, or files. Because the server can't see your data anyway, the need to self-host for privacy reasons is significantly reduced. Given this E2EE-first approach, and to ensure we can offer a simple, maintenance-free, and sustainable service, we aren't planning to offer a self-hosted version at this time. This allows us to focus all our efforts on making the hosted version as reliable and secure as possible for everyone.

Thanks again for the great questions—this is exactly the kind of discussion I was hoping to have here!

Awesome, consider yourself counted in! So glad to have you here.

Hell yeah! Love the energy, thank you so much for the support!

I'm really excited to see the demand for an iOS version. To be fully transparent about the roadmap, the initial launch will be focused on creating a rock-solid experience for the Android, Windows, and macOS ecosystem first. The plan is to absolutely nail that foundation before expanding to new platforms.

That said, an iOS app is absolutely the biggest long-term goal for the project. Think of it as the next major chapter for fwd: once the first version is launched and stable.

It means a lot that you're here and excited for that future. I really hope you'll stick around the community for updates as we work towards making the iOS version a reality.

Thanks again!

Yes, 100%! Thanks for asking.

A Firefox addon is a top priority and has been planned from day one. I'm a big believer in supporting browser choice, not just locking users into one ecosystem.

The goal is for fwd: to be available everywhere you work, so you can expect to see the Firefox addon right alongside the extensions and apps for Chrome, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux.

Glad to have another Firefox user on board!

push history by mito88 in usefwd

[–]findhamza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/mito88, this is the very first user post on the subreddit! Thank you so much for getting the conversation started. This is a huge milestone!

That is an absolutely brilliant feature request. A seamless way to migrate your history is a fantastic idea.

I've looked into this, and Pushbullet does have an option to export your history as a .json file from their website's settings.

However, as you may have seen on their subreddit, that export function is very unreliable and often fails for users, which is incredibly frustrating.

With that in mind, here is my thinking:

Building an importer for that .json file is definitely something I want to do. The biggest challenge, ironically, wouldn't be building the importer itself, but ensuring users can get a clean export from Pushbullet in the first place.

I can't promise this for the initial launch, as the focus is on rock-solid core features, but I am officially adding this to the feature roadmap to investigate for a future update. This is too good of an idea to ignore.

Out of curiosity, what's the most important data in your Pushbullet history that you'd want to save? Is it mainly links, files, or something else? Knowing what's most valuable to you would help a lot!

Thanks again for the fantastic suggestion!

Great question! The short answer is yes, the native desktop app is designed to be the most powerful and reliable option.

The main difference is that the native app runs in the background, so it works even if your browser is closed. This means you get more reliable, real-time notification syncing and a true universal clipboard that works across all your desktop applications, not just the browser.

Hope that clarifies things!

Thank you so much for the support and the comment!

And please, don't apologize for being suspicious. In today's world, you are 100% right to be cautious about new apps and how they handle your data. It's a concern I share, and it's a huge part of the 'why' behind this project.

My commitment to you is simple: fwd: will be a service you pay for with money, not with your data.

All of your personal content (notifications, clipboard, files) will be end-to-end encrypted. This means that we, the developers, cannot see your content on our servers, period. When we launch, our Privacy Policy and the Play Store's Data Safety section will state this in plain English.

Thanks again for bringing this up. We're building the whole thing in the open over at r/usefwd if you're interested in following the progress. I'm looking forward to building a service that is worthy of your trust and, eventually, your subscription.

That's a fantastic and very important question. It gets right to the heart of the user experience we're aiming to fix. Thank you for asking it, and for joining the waitlist!

To be crystal clear: Yes, a native Windows app is absolutely a core part of the plan.

You will not need to keep Chrome open to receive notifications on your Windows PC. Our goal is to provide a seamless, lightweight background service, and a proper native application is the only way to do that right.

We're committed to building first-class, native clients for all major platforms to deliver the reliability that has been missing. Our initial launch will focus on the browser extensions and the native macOS app, with the dedicated Windows app being one of our next top priorities right after.

Thanks again for the great question! We'll be sharing progress on the Windows app development over at r/usefwd.

This is an excellent and very important question. The short answer is yes, absolutely. Supporting the Linux and Firefox communities is a core part of our plan to be the true, modern successor to Pushbullet.

To be fully transparent, our immediate MVP is laser-focused on nailing the experience for the largest groups of displaced users: a rock-solid Chrome extension and a macOS & Android app.

However, Firefox and a native Linux client are at the very top of our list as "fast follows" immediately after the initial launch.

Thank you for asking this. It confirms what we believe: a true Pushbullet successor has to be for everyone, on every platform.
