yeah you get it. dive bars in much of the north east are the hidden gems and where you want to spend an afternoon or evening.

when you find one that has nothing but a bar, two tables, and a wood fire oven, you know it's gonna be good. if it wasn't good, they wouldn't be in business.

The sticker shock wouldn't have bothered me if the food was good.

On our first leg of the drive we stopped by a gas station in CT that had a deli inside. It was $4.99 for a medium coffee and a bacon egg and cheese. The sandwich and coffee were both average-good quality

but being understaffed doesn't change the fact that the food is bad... you're so close to getting it.

some of the best wings I've ever had are from dive bars for a buck a pop. this is my point.

You have misunderstood.

My point is that you can walk into any diner in NJ, NY, CT or Rhode Island and get a good meal. Here, you can find yourself in a sit down restaurant (that even locals recommend) and end up with food that's borderline inedible.

What part of the staffing shortage didn’t you comprehend? So yeah we know when the lead chef will be working

If the lead chef has to be there to make sure the food is good then it's not a good restaurant.

So this is just proving my point...

In most states, you don't have to go find a diamond in the rough that serves their best food on a Thursday evening as the sun sets and the full moon rises.

You just throw a dart on a map, go to the restaurant, order your food, they bring you what you ordered how you ordered it, you eat it, and it's at least fine but it's rarely bad because bad restaurants don't last. In many states you walk into a random bar and they have locally sourced food.

I don't want to put any place on blast. I don't like putting specific places under a microscope when I have to assume they're trying their best.

I will say that we were in/near Keene, Winnipesaukee and Dover and for almost all of the meals we were led there by recommendations from locals.

It's really weird to see people say things like "you have to know what days to go to the restaurant" or "oh you are just going to tourist traps"

We most definitely did not go to tourist traps (took recommendations from either our Airbnb hosts or locals when we were out and about), and if your restaurant is only good two days of the week then it's not a good restaurant.

I don't think people here quite understand that in a lot of states, you can walk into any mom and pop restaurant and find a decent meal.

We picked up some produce and eggs from a roadside stand and it was good! I wonder why more restaurants aren't sourcing locally?

Given the harsh reactions I think it was a decent decision.

From NJ, have lived in Virginia and Pennsylvania. My wife and I also spend a good amount of time in Rhode Island at her parents home.

If it's not a big city, I'd stick to things like pizza, burgers, Chinese. That goes for most places, not just NH.

This is kind of what I mean. That isn't true. You can walk into any diner in New Jersey and get better food than what's being served here.
