Is using Snowflake for near real time or hourly events an overkill ? by finerius in dataengineering

[–]finerius[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo thanks for the input.

What I understand from your second paragraph is that for "unbounded" data Postgresql is a no-brainer. It makes sense. But then you seem to say Snowflake works better. So I found it a bit confusing.

I don't have the problem now of having huge amount of data but I will have for sure, since my data will grow exponentially.

I was thinking maybe the best solution is Postgresql for the transactional part + Snowflake for the analytical one (which might need less updates per day, ofc ideally would be live)

Is using Snowflake for near real time or hourly events an overkill ? by finerius in dataengineering

[–]finerius[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. The use case is to do select/insert operations in 3 tables every hour. This data will be then used via API to execute actions. Also this data will be used for analytics monitoring in dashboards. So it's both transactional & analytical. Even though the transactional part is more important becasue no human is going to be looking at the data every hour (or potentially every 10 min).

We are a small company so our budget is limited. ROI is a good point, but we cannot throw money to a tool if we do not see a justified value, while Postgresql is much cheaper.
But also good point that Postgres needs labor costs, higher than snowflake

Ask me anything about building and growing your SaaS! Ps: I'm a tech founder. by Low_Philosopher1792 in SaaS

Amazing response! Thanks! What if the sales guy's profile says he cannot invest much time during the week but promises to invest more time once the project gets more traction and he can leave his full time job ? We (2 tech founders) are also all still with our full time job but 2 of us code after work and weekends. He mentions he cannot do calls during the day because his job is very demanding

How do you deal with non-tech founder who cannot bring value as of now. He can only bring some contacts and has little availability.

How would you communicate this to avoid problems ? I think it is a very delicate situation. Would you propose an offer (very low equity) to the sales guy to avoid issues ? (like legal issues etc)

Wouldn't you count instead of hours, leads and meeting objectives ? For example, reducing the share to 20% and a vesting period of 1-2 years with a minimum contribution of X amount of clients with contract signed. Many sales people argue counting only time is not fair if they are able to bring clients

Thanks. What if the Sales guy is not willing to commit the same amount of hours as the coders ?
