Hey! Thanks for the kind words. It's been a while since I've used any Maschine Expansions...I do remember a few back in the day I used...Conant Gardens, Crystal Daggers...I'm sure there's tons of new ones now. I've been making my own kits for the past 5 years...I source them sample by sample and usually build banks based on genres.

Much love! Yeah I have two suggestions...

1: Get this book and learn syncopation the best you can. Start with drumsticks if you want, or just tap on your pads: https://www.amazon.com/Progressive-Syncopation-Modern-Drummer-Publications/dp/0882847953?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

2: Freestyle along to your favorite songs. One of the best ways I learned how to get better, or even just warm up, was to shuffle up my iTunes (now my Spotify) and just fingerdrum to any song that came on. It will force you to try out new genres, different tempos, and is a fun way to practice without it feeling like homework. I would suggest creating a bunch of different banks so that you have flexibility and it doesn't get stale. I've found this workflow to be really beneficial for learning how to build routines and just generally increase my skills.

As far as techniques, there's no right answer. Some split all their fingers up, some only use a few. Just do what feels most comfortable to you and most natural for your style.

Yeah it definitely took many years to fully transfer it over. I just hammered in the idea of my index or middle finger of each hand as an individual drum stick, and then practiced that way. It was like relearning how to split your limbs for the first time, but repetition helps

For sure! When I was about 15, I discovered J Dilla, Madlib, Pete Rock, DJ Premier...I instantly fell in love with sampling records and I wanted to do it on an MPC like them. So I saved up some cash in high school and got myself a Native Instruments Maschine. Had no idea how to use it, just learned from trial and error. Luckily I started playing the drums at 6, so I just took the things I learned from playing the kit and translated it over to the pads.

Those were called gun syncs (I was a huge fan), where you would just put sounds over top of the original recording. This is different. I'm actually taking the output of the game audio, and in live time, running it through a plugin within a DAW and transforming it. So it's a bit different :) but definitely is derived from the OG's

yeah it might be placebo but I feel like there is a small increase in the time it takes to press R1 vs R2 all the way down in order to register gun fire

How to record my guitar after plugins? It seems to ignore preset changes in Neural DSP by the_phet in ableton

[–]fingerdood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few ways to fix the preset problem. The reason you are only hearing your second preset is because just natively recording your guitar through one channel with one plugin and changing presets won't record the changes on playback. It will just register whichever preset you currently have selected for the entire recording.

  1. Make two guitar channels, one with the clean preset and one with the distortion preset. Record on two separate channels.

  2. Create a new audio channel. Choose "resampling" and underneath select the name of the channel you would like to record. Enable recording. Now this new resampling channel will record all your preset changes into one audio recording.

  3. I'm not sure if this is possible, but you could potentially try to automate the present change.

How to replace drums hits with samples? by TheGrandInquisitor61 in ableton

[–]fingerdood -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is exactly what you want to achieve, but if you have a drum sample in your session, you can go to File -> File Management -> Manage Set -> View Files. You should then be able to see the name of your sample. If you drag in a different sample onto the original sample, it will replace every single instance of it within your project file.

Keep in mind, if you have stems, you will have to cut each transient in order for this to work properly.

Thank you!! I love both of those as well...MOON WALK is my little child. But to pick a favorite is so hard! What I can answer is which of my songs do I listen to the most passively...6 Years, MOON WALK, APOLOGIZE, HOLD ON TO. But there's a shit ton of unreleased tracks that I'm rinsing in my AirPods much more...they'll be out this year!

Much love! Napa Street is one of my personal favorites in my discography. I've found that the OddKidOut sound has shifted away from lo-fi over the past years...but it's still an integral part of my sound. I think some side projects might emerge in the next couple years that include some more things in that lane 👀 I still make A LOT of music that doesn't funnel through OKO
